40K/Inquisitor RPG. The Line of Damnation.

Exercise had proven to be a painful bit of work, but after his enforced lethargy, it was a necessity. Sharp in body, sharp in mind. He jogged a circuit of a shuttle bay, ignoring crewmen as his boots clomped on the heavy deck. He wasn't certain how well he would be able to do crunches, even after he was fully recovered... the augmetics in his torso would permanently impair his mobility to some degree, the chirurgeon had informed him.
What had interested him was the prospect of further augmetic enhancement that the man had mentioned, and it was something he had resolved to look into further when given the opportunity.
Affiliation with the Inquisition was turning out to have its perks...

"Colonel-Commissar! Colonel-Commissar!"
It took Prius a moment to realize the naval rating was calling out to him. The new rank would take time to get used to. He pulled the towel from his face, noticing the spackling of blood... his rebuilt nasal passages had been strained by the exercise, a sign that the warnings from the medicae about pushing too hard, too soon were truthful. He wiped again, taking a quick glance in the mirror to make sure the blood was properly cleaned from his face, before turning to acknowledge the man.
"What is it?"
"Sir, the funeral is beginning shortly. For Inquisitor Kruger," the rating said as he stood firmly at attention.
"I see. You will take me there, then."
"Yes sir."

Kruger's corpse had been worked on extensively, to the point where Pater almost imagined he wouls get up off the slab and laugh it off. It wasn't so.
The hall was specifically designed for these sorts of occasions, with a dumbwaiter behind the stage that would lower Kruger into the ship's furnace. A giant frieze of the Emperor sacrificing Himself to defeat Horus was etched onto the wall behind the marble podium, which stood elevated above a gathering area that could easily accomodate several thousand people. Pater snapped his head away from Kruger's corpse and looked at his audience. He licked his lips.
"We are all gathered here today to bear witness to the passing of Davik Kruger, senior member of His Most Holy Inquisition, who passed away last week, after 120 years of loyal service to the Emperor.
He was a wise man with a wry wit who could always be counted on to do what was best for the Emperor, the Imperium and his friends.
He personally saved my life on 3 occasions.
"I can rest easy knowing that he is looking down on us now, from the Emperor's side, and that he would approve of this," He gestured to the incineration machinery, "As one last method of serving the Imperium, even in such a small way. The Emperor protects." He stepped back from the podium and crossed his hands over his chest, interlocking his thumbs in the formal sign of the Aquila. A priest led those present in a hymn, as the mighty ship's guns fired a salute.

Prius crossed his hands in a formal sign of the aquila as the ship's guns fired off, tasting the solemn nature of the moment, savoring it. A hero's funeral, the passing of another warrior of the mighty Emperor, it was precisely the sort of ceremony he would desire. As the guns fired a final time, he stepped toward the podium.
He'd had little time to prepare for this, so he decided to speak straight from the heart.
"It is said that the Emperor sheds a tear for each of his warriors who fall in battle. I know this is so, and I was honored to have fought by this valiant hero's side as he met his glorious fate. I knew him for only a short time, but the lesson of his life and his death in the service of our Emperor will be with me for the rest of my days. Remember this- we do not mourn his passing in this ceremony so much as we celebrate his most worthy service to the God-Emperor. Inquisitor Davik Kruger died as he lived, facing his foe without fear. Let every true servant of the Emperor here look to his example when confronted by doubt, and gird himself with the resolution that inquisitor Kruger displayed throughout his career. Most importantly, let every servant of the Emperor here pray on this day and each day to come that when their opportunity to join the Emperor arises that they may embrace it without fear or qualm, as did our brother in the battle against darkness, Davik Kruger."

Adivan stood near the body as Pater spoke, staring sadly at what had once been Inquisitor Kruger. Though he had not known his fellow Inquisitor for long, he had liked him... and now he was dead. After all the fighting, all the struggle, he had fallen at the very end, only a few moments before victory, and without even the chance to fight back. Well, we avenged him, at least. I hope the Warp eats the soul of that... whatever it was.
As Pater finished, a thought struck him. Shortly before it had slain Kruger, the Abomination had claimed to know the dead Inquisitor, as if they had clashed before. I must speak with Pater after the ceremony, and see if he knows anything of this. It might prove important.

Nathan stood there alone in his thoughts then he spoke. "I hardly knew Inquisitor Kruger.I hardly know any of you. I do know this about Inquisitor Kruger....
he wouldnt want us to dwell on his death but to carry on .As the Ordo Imperiulus gave birth to the Inquisition and its various ordos by order of the High Lords of Terra,As the Impierial Army gave birth to the Guard and so too were the Marine Legions birthed into the currrent chapters ..so too hve we come through a time of trial and fire and are created anew."
"Let each man mourn his passing in hi own way but we have a task at hand to help us through this.I myself am heavily burdened by the knowledge that not a single meber of my own family is alive. They all died Mellinia ago while I stayed suspened in time ,in the Warp at the Emperors mercy"
"We must carry on ,we must go forward .If there is to be a true memorial for Inquisitor Kruger let it be our redidcation to doing the Emperors work.To shoulder our burdens once more.To carry HIS light to all the dark places that exist and if we have to .To use it to cleanse the alien,The Mutant,The Heretic and the Daemon"

He nodded at Nathan's words, mulling them over. It was quite the awesome thought, that he had been in service to the Emperor himself, when He was not bound to the Golden Throne.
In all honesty, he cared little for the thought of position with the Inquisition... not when compared to the prospect of service with one who heard the Holy Word as spoken from His lips. After the ceremony was finished, he would seek him out to speak on the offer of service in his retinue.

Jolan Gix was the next to come foreward to honour Inquisitor Krugar. "Like my colleagues I did not know Inquisitor Krugar well. As Inquisitors it is our duty to decide the fate of millions or billions based on the cruel mathmatics of necessity. What is the fate of one against the fate of billions?"
He paused for a moment. "But that does not mean that the life of an individual does not have value. That does not mean his life is not precious. Inquisitor Krugar died as an Inquisitor should. He risked his life to preserve billions. What is the value of a life that would save billions? I did not know Inquisitor Krugar well, but about him I know enough. He died true to his calling and to the service of the people of the Imperium. He shall be missed."

Judge Xerxes stepped forward afterwards, his face solemn. " I did not know Inquisitor Krugar well, but like all Inquisitors, he enforced the Emperor's will, and maintained the Imperium's purity throughout his life. I belive it is appropriate to say a prayer from the Book of Judgement, the Prayer of the Fallen." He paused to withdraw a gilded-gold scroll from it's case. He began murmuring softly in the Holy Tongue, and as he went on, his voice grew more melodic and entrancing. The prayer ended when Xerxes drew out a ceremonial warknife, and slit his arm, drawing a scarlet trickle of blood, and letting it drip onto the floor. He bowed his head and said one final passage of the prayer, then stepped away.

The silent cloaked figure did nothing, but follow Nathan, with her 4 meter long power spear deactivated but still carried, something that bulky just could not be stowed, besides her standing orders were not to talk at all unless addressed by a supirior.
The scariest folk song lyrics are "My Boy Grew up to be just like me" from cats in the cradle by Harry Chapin
Prius felt his newfound abilities fade... it was disconcerting, to say the least. He hadn't even noticed how much his awareness had expanded until, like a switch, it was turned off. Suddenly, he no longer knew precisely where everyone was standing, the sense of general intentions of those around him, gone. The pain that his regeneration worked to hold at bay flooded him with a vengeance, and a slight trickle of blood began flowing from his left nostril, unnoticed.
More than that, he felt a sense of revulsion, and he glanced sideways, his peripheral vision catching sight of a cloaked figure. There...

He followed, and feeling the wetness on his lip, he reaches up and brushed it with his hand, then looked at the blood.
"A blunt?" he asked, curious. He could feel his extrasensory perception flooding back to him, and was somewhat amazed at how quickly it had become a part of his mental pattern. It was akin to being suddenly blinded or deafened.

As the cloaked figure entered the room behind Nathan, someone observing from above might have seen an effect somewhat reminiscent of a magnet when placed near iron filings, only in reverse. With expressions that varied between fear, disgust, and a mixture of both, the occupants of the room drew back, leaving a wide area around the new arrivals that was simply empty.
Adivan had been walking towards Pater and Prius when Nathan and the other figure entered; at their arrival, he quickened his pace markedly, and his face twisted as though he might vomit. As he joined the other two, he took several deep breaths and seemed to calm down somewhat, but still looked markedly unwell.

"I can see the use of such a creature, yes."
He paused, realizing his choice of language might be taken as offensive, and even hypocritical. After all, he himself was a mutant, like most of those gathered. However the habits and attitudes of a lifetime, as reinforced by rigorous indoctrination, are hard to overcome.

The funeral was over and people were filing out when Adivan asked him about Torquen.
"Yes, I'm afraid that Davik knew him. They used to be great friends before Torquen defected to the Ruinous Powers. After that, he felt personally betrayed. We thought he'd died 5 years ago; Obviously he somehow managed to come back."

"A good question, and one that I shall be investigating. I'd also like to question Prius about the battle; I understand he was... possessed... by something, for a short while, and it wasn't Torquen. I'd like to know what it was, in case we're still facing another psyker in the service of the Ruinous Powers."

"True," said Jolan Gix. "but that is not our only concern. This Chaos chrisis had also served to distract us from the matter of the Men of Iron. We don't know what they are up to at the moment. Although, I will admit this ship is an impressive addition to the Imperium's might."

"The other psyker called himself the PsyKing. I believe he was trying to betray Tarquon. We spoke, briefly." Gix clenches his fist in frustration. "He was both more powerful and more skilled than I am. Even with a force rod, he was easily able to handle me." Green witchfire clings to fist, before sizzling and vanishing.

"If he still lives, he could be a serious threat. Especially if he found out about the Archeotech.
Nevermind. You are correct, we should still be wary of the Iron Men and their technology. What do you suggest we do?" He deferred to the other's seniority; He had only been a full-blown Inquisitor for a week.

Gix laughed inwardly. Next month would mark two years as a full inquisitor and he appeared to be senior. "I don't know," he said shaking his head. "We've got to keep our eyes open and gather information. The stakes are so high, we've got to make the right decision and right now this seems too good to be true."
