Marriage no longer a "religious" institution...

Post by weemadando »

Heard on NewsRadio earlier today that according to statistics from the past year, more marriages were performed as "civic" functions than as "religious" functions.

This means more marriages done at the "registry office" and by "civil celebrants" than at churches officiated by clergy...

That means that in Australia at least they can no longer use the phrase "a holy institution" as an excuse.

I never thought they were using "holy institution" as an excuse.

I thought they were just using the "Howard doesn't like it" excuse. Much more honest.

So what? Unless it's forced into the Church civil law will have no effect on their "holy institution." Unless the morons think the only thing keeping the male population from smoking the cock is the gay marriage ban.

You have to realize that most Christian "moral values" behaviour is not really about "protecting" anyone; it's about their desire to send a continual stream of messages of condemnation towards people whose existence offends them. - Darth Wong alias Mike Wong

Hmm.... in the eyes of the fundies, is marriage still a 'holy institution' if neither of the people getting married are Xians?

I have family members who consider it a "perversion" of the holy insititution, but still within its bounds none the less.

The fact that marriage isn't a "holy institution" can be proved by the fact that I can call up any one of my female friends right now and if she agreed, we could go down to the courthouse, fill out some paperwork, shell over about 40 dollars in fees, wait for a background check to make sure we aren't brother and sister and step before a judge, then we will be legally married with every single damn right/priviledge/penalty that comes with it. As far as the state is concerned, you don't even ever have to look at a church, let alone be married by the clergy. The whole "holy institution" thing is bupkiss because the actual nuts and bolts of getting married has nothing to do with religion at all and hasn't for over a century.
