Sorry Coyote, and Verilon, but I`ve just finished the coolest book, entitled "The Medevil Underground". In it the author states how when the first vernacular versions of the bible started circulating in the middle ages, people were outraged that purgatory wasn`t mentioned, purgatory being a major component of the Catholic church, I can see why.

Christians say "Jesus was that guy, th one we've been waiting for" while Jews say, "mmm, nope, not him, still waiting."
Both Jews and Christians are very good at waiting for Messiahs. 2000 years so far for the Christians, and 3000 years for the Jews. Minor nitpick: I believe Judaism dates back to around 1000 BC, not 2000-3000 BC.
For another interesting view of God and his nature, read Milton's "Paradise Lost". God sets up Adam and Eve to make the moral choice of defying him with the fruit of the tree. The reason? Because their devotion to him was like that of a robot; unthinking and not of conscious choice. He wanted them to be able to make the choice of not going to God and so pretty much set them up.
And of course, since he's a sadistic bastard, he punishes them for making the wrong choice and trying to grow up (seek knowledge) instead of mindlessly obeying his arbitrary rules.

Hello! Chances are if I'm seeing God one Judgement Day, he's not the mass murdering phsycotic God of the Bible. Because, if God is the Biblical God then I sure won't see heaven.

Just curious.
I personally am 100% sure that the Biblical God does not exist, in fact I think the Muslim Allah is more likely to exist (at least there are less contradictory nonsense in the Koran compared to the Bible). If there is a deity of some kind who would judge me when I die, then chances are that I will be judged on my actions and not on my faith. If so then I will have no fear.

If I AM judged on my faith as the fundies assert, then I will gladly go to hell, and I won't be able to stand going to heaven with Falwell and company there...at least Gandhi and the Buddha will be down there with me.

As Kheegan points out, if everything fundies have been asserting is true, we are going to hell in the company of some of the most intelligent people in history. To think that the credulous morons like Falwell and Pat Robertson are the standard we should aspire to just makes me laugh out loud.

I would love to make small talk with Gandhi and the Buddha. If I go to hell I can talk philosophy with both of them, while screaming in pain of course. :D

I went to a talk by a born again that had had a near death experience.

He said that it was very dark, lonely and there were demons just out of view taunting him.

He didn't mention any gnashing of teeth or wailing though.

I just thought of something: If God were omniscient, and he KNEW we would fuck up with the Tree of Knowledge, why, then, did he command Adam and Eve NOT to eat of the Tree? So he could banish them forever from the Garden of Eden? What a sadistic little bastard, if you ask me...

Of course, we can't say for SURE that he punishes us....I mean, I don't believe any of the prophets ever made a descent to Hell.....as far as I know Hercules and Persephone wer the only ones that ever did anyhting comparable, and that was in Greek Mythology!
