Population of Coruscant

Post by Kray Dronvon »

Anyone have an idea of the population of Coruscant?
Im taking a rough guess and saying there are around 13 trillion people my frined on the other hand says its more like 200 trillion, which to me seems a bit rash.
I have no idea how large the planet is. so spare me the im a noob crap.

SWTC wrote: All evidence indicates that the [pre-Dark Empire] surface of Coruscant was entirely covered with city, except for small polar caps and tiny isolated seas. The orbital views in The Phantom Menace show consistent and well-lit urban terrain at essentially all latitudes. Supposing that the cityscape amounts to 90% of the global surface, and assuming that the planet is about the same size as Earth, this means an area of about 460,000,000 km². (This is a miserly, worst-case estimate, since the physical characteristics of Coruscant derived from other sources make it larger than Earth.) The typical population density for suburban areas of modern cities on Earth are of an order of magnitude about 10,000 or 20,000 persons per square kilometre (taking the comfortable Australian city of Perth as an example). (Readers who would prefer a USA example could consider New York county, with a 1999 population of 1,551,844 persons, an area of 28 square miles = 72.5km², and a population density of 21,107 persons/km² after metric conversion. Reputedly the densest urban population centre on Earth, Hong Kong, had 98,000 persons/km² in 1999 and remains less built-up than Coruscant by some orders of magnitude.) If Imperial City were only as heavily populated as the suburbs of Perth then the population would be of the order of nine trillion persons. Of course Imperial city is not inhabited in the same way as Perth. These suburbs consist almost entirely of single-level buildings and generous gardens around each family dwelling; Imperial City is composed of spires averaging two miles tall, with hundreds of floors, and very few residents ever set eyes on the soil of their planet. The population density of Imperial City is certainly at least several hundred times that of Perth. The total population of Coruscant must be at least of the order of several thousand trillion (1,000,000,000,000,000), and certainly no less than several hundred trillion.

Can you believe the TPM ITW says Coruscant has a measly population of 1 trillion? Ridiculous.

Reynolds is good, but he's still pretty wimpy before the RPG Faction at the ranch.

Of course the problem is that offical sources stating a 1 Trillion population are in fact offical...SWTC is no such thing. As stupid as it is, the 1 Trillion number stands. Unless of course its directly contradicted by the films and I don't know if it is...the planet is covered, but population denstiy vs industry and so on is hard to tell.

Of course if Saxton is writing episode III ICS its possible he might be able to slip in a figure or two.

Actually, Reynolds never wrote Inside the Worlds of The Phantom Menance, it was written by Kristin Lund-Meyer, an English Language major. Reynolds was too busy writing the Episode I ICS and Visual Dictionary to to ITW.

It would at least be a better low end, then the american version of a trillion.

No, its contradicted. GL over official idiots. In order for the one trillion number to be workable with this INANE "industry" excuse (we see two districts and all the WEGwankers came over it), almost totally unpopulated industry would have to cover 99.9% of this planet that is "one big city."

For a canon or official number to be overridden, it must be either contradicted by explicit statement or logic/common sense. The "1 trillion" number falls under the common sense heading.
Not everything needs an explicit statement to be overridden. For example, no official source explicitly states the Executor's length as 11 miles (though Dr. Saxton has done his best to ensure that at least one heartily supports it), but any other length stats are overridden by the independent investigations done by fans such as Dr. Saxton, because they are logically supported. Similarly, if an official source says "TIE fighters are solar-powered", since we know what solar power is, and we know what TIE fighters can do, we can contest that.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

A one trillion figure for Coruscant CAN be rationalized so long as you take into account that much of the planet is heavily automated with a droid economy and much of the space is devoted to power production, manufacturing (both of food and manufactured goods) as well as other things like waste management. I see no reason to discount the one trillion figure given that we have very little information about what Coruscant is like out of the areas immediately surrounding the Jedi Order and the Senate.

Oh, and I might add that many of the buildings we saw during the AOTC chase scenes looked both heavily industrial and automated.

And to make things more interesting, different species might be able to have greater or smaller population densities. Imagine an urbanised planet populated by Ewoks!

Additionally, many of the lower levels of Coruscant could be sparsely inhabited. The majority of the deeper undercity could be mostly uninhabited save for the occasional tribes of scavengers and packs of mutants.

Of course this could only refer to the Human population rather than the underworld population. Or it only counts the perminant residents of the planet.

Yes, a city planet where only .1% of the strata is inhabited at city-density is so reasonable with canon.

Please. The realistic lower limits are several thousand trillion, guys.

Why? It is so hard to imagine that the vast majority of Coruscant's surface might be used for other purposes besides habitation? In a thouroughly droid driven economy, why would you need such a vast quantity of humans?

Because if only .1% of it is inhabited, its not a fucking city, genius.

They have dedicated construction/factory worlds which are described as such. Coruscant is one big city. The whole thing is covered with deep sprawl.

You are splitting hairs. It can still be a giant city and have an enormous amount of its resources and population be droids.

Let me get this straight, you are hanging your entire argument on the use of the word "city"?

European trillion? Sweet! (1 quintillion to us non-brits)

I predict:

B-Squared might agree (lightsabre argument)

Spanky might disagree (country of origin argument)

"CITY" might be an acronym for Counting Individuals Takes Years! ;)
