Woohoo! B-17 flyover

Post by Frank Hipper »

Just had a Confederate Air Force B-17G fly over the house. Sitting here watching Nova and heard a basso rumble from the sky, ran outside in my bare feet and, TAH-DAH!!

No, it had a polished metal finish and black tail marking. I know they`ve been working on one here, bad wing spar. I`m about 8 miles from Falcon Field, where the AZ wing is based. Need to go out there sometime soon, unlike your average museum, touching is encouraged. I gave myself a tour of their HE-111 a couple years ago. The whole thing to myself, it was double plus fun!

I've been on that HE-111 I think.....was it a Merlin engined one from
the Spanish Air Force?

What a load of PC bullshit. Obliterate all mention of the Confederacy in a modern connotation and we can all sleep a little easier. And yeah, what the hell are they called now?

Last year they brought a B-17 and B-24 out to Sunnyvale. My Dad and I went over to check them out. I saw both of them fly over while I was getting out of my car at work. It was so wonderful. They made several passes. So anyway, we go out there for the tour, and my dad goes and buys us tickets for a flight!

Here are some pics I took:

--- Okay, I built a quick page on geocities. Take a look.

The B17, oh how I love that bird. I live just a few minutes away from Hill AFB museum. They have a B17, a B29, and a SR 71 amoung other really nice planes to gaze and wonder at.....
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

I have seen a couple of P51's, and a torpedo bomber. Hell I've even seen a P38 at a airshow but never a P40.

Thats why is was so special. P-40s were rare, even back in 82 or 83 when I saw it.

There are a few P-51s out here in the Bay Area. Before San Jose airport kicked out all the private planes someone had one parked in one of the stalls.

Two years ago, I was walking my kid to school when I heard a prop plane and a jet engine at the same time. Living next to a AFB I normaly wouldn't have bothered with the jet engine but the prop noise made me look. There was an F16 and a P51 practicing for the air show and going through some basic manuvers together. It was awesome to see the old and the new together like that.

P-51's have that unique sound thats hard to miss.

Its kinda sad that in another 10 years we probably wont see many if any of these aircraft in the air. Every year there are fewer and fewer flying examples.

I've seen one. Even got to fly in it. Last B-29 Fifi, it was awesome.

Our airshow is luckly, two local pilots both own P-51s. They do a lot of formation flying and a pretty cool mock dogfight.

Yeah, I know. Two years ago the "Comemerative" Air Force brought their B-29 to Wichita. Same scenario as this thread, jumped up and ran like a fool, half nekid, for the door. It had it's flaps and gear down, but damn it was cool.I doubt they'll keep it flying much longer. Besides the CAF, we've got the Champlin Fighter Museum here in Mesa. It's one of my favorite places in the world. They're housed in WWII vintage hangars, and have a really impressive collection. Everything from a Rumpler Taube to a PhantomII with just about everything else in between. And a T-34 85 to boot!
