A plasma bolt struck down the a cultist next to him. Lords of Darkness! That was too close! That's it, Vizilgar was going to take a nice cushy assignment commanding a devestator squad. No more of this shit for him. The traitor pumped bolter rounds in the direction the plasma bolt had come from. Melta guns, plasma weapons, stealth sabateurs with melta bombs? Why in the secret names of the Ancient Powers were these mortals so well armed?

The troops quickly rappelled down with him. He pushed them along the corridor. "Move! MOVE!" jogging along himself, his heavy steps thudding down the corridor. "Let me know when we're under their center mass of troops," he ordered the auspex operator.

It was a three-fold joy. The joy of pushing the edge, riding the zone, combined with the joy of doing damage to the archenemy, and finally the joy of getting to do massive damage to naval facilities, a form of sanctioned vandalism.

Emperor, it didn't get any better than this.

The auspex-operator called out, announcing that he had heavy signals located overhead.

"Check that against the specs... make sure we're not under the infirmary," Engelier cautioned the man. It wouldn't do to pull this little stunt on hundreds of disabled patients.

"We're good," the operator called back.

"Okay, boys and girls... latch those bombs to the ceiling. Weapons team, set up to sweep this damned corridor clean," he said, the rictus grin back on his face. Oh sweet vengeance, on everyone...

The bombs firmly clamped to the ceiling, he pulled his troops back, and readied everyone... weapons hot, aimed down the corridor.

"Boys... drop the floor out from under those frakkers, please."

The bombs detonated in a ripple...

Bolter rounds riddled the area around Mallok. He cursed in Krootish and ordered his Kindred to retreat. He needed a clear shot at that monster, and he would get it. The Taint of Chaos went against the core of his very being, and he would fight it to the last.

Searing heat ripped through the corridor, killing most the the cultists instantly. Their flesh flashed to ash and their bones blackened so quickly they didn't even have time to scream. Their bones hit the puddle of slag four meters below them as they fell through the now non-existent floor into the molten pooll below.

Only Vizilgor survived. The chaos marine had been at the edge of the blast and was carried down by the collapse of the weakened floor. He rose swiftly, but not swiftly enough. No one knew which shot killed him as he was struck by a storm of fire that did not relent for a full ten seconds after he collapsed.

"I'm currently about 680 metres from the Fool's Wager's prow batteries, and drifting towards them at a rather disconcerting speed. Urgent action is required to avoid having the Ordo's finest becoming a hood ornament."

There was a pause as the defenders stared at the hole where the floor used to be. Then Sgt Slate laughed.

"Alright, alright, cease fire. That, my children, is the sweet sign of a combat bonus for each and every one of you, to be redeemed as soon as we offload our merchandise."

With a calculated swagger, he strode forward and put a final shot into the corpse of the space marine.

"And that is one of the blackhearted heretics who turned on our beloved Emperor ten millennia ago. Someday when you're bouncing your grandchildren on your knees, you'll be able to say you killed one of the beasts, a chaos marine. Good job."

Engelier keyed his external speaker. "Rogue trader Engelier Fulgenzio at your service, guardsman. A pleasure to help, and be sure to put in a good word for us with your officers, if you could be so kind."

--------------------
"Don't worry, inquisitor. Squashing inquisitorial vessels is bad for our insurance," Uschi said. It was like something Engelier would say, but somehow he would have made it funnier. "Stand by for retrieval."

Axidus strode through the command dome. All the Imperials were dead. Where were the inquisitor? His reports had shown them to be here! He snarled in frustration. He should check in with Vizilgor. "Report," he snapped.

Nothing. "Report!" Nothing. Blips registered on his auspex. Non standard readings. He had seen nothing like them before. "Voleg, Kresh, Stender. Detach, take some serfs, and avenge our battle brother. Teach them to stand against the Black Legion is to die. The rest of you with me."

"Synnove, let's get something of a defensive position set up," Engelier ordered. "You know, those military things you do, where everyone talks to each other and checks in and so on."

He wasn't that blithely ignorant, but he enjoyed playing at it over the private channel.

He sat at the edge of the slag pit, the still hot metal not bothering his powered armor in the slightest. He was down off the drug high, with a compensatory cocktail of drugs working to keep his system level. When it was all said and done, he'd drop like a rock for twenty-odd hours, but in the meantime the drugs could keep him going, and keep him sharp. His chirurgeon cluck-clucked about the horrible things he was doing to himself whenever he went into battle like this, but then, who planned on living forever?

------------------

A pair of servitor-operated tugs expertly guided the inquisitor's vessel into the docking bay, alongside the pair of returning shuttles. Uschi was worried out of her mind about the captain, but his latest reports seemed to be encouraging, although the man had the infuriating ability to make a desperate last-stand sound like a walk in the park.

As the inquisitor's vessel was settled down on the bay, the ornate honor guard snapped to present arms, while Uschi waited for the guest of honor to come off.

And if they tried something funny, the docking bay defenses would crisp the holy hell out of them...

"Of course, sergeant. Matrick, would you see your way to assisting the good sergeant in evacuating the wounded?"

"Right away, sir." The naval trooper moved his squad up the line.

The Inquisitor's foot slammed into the wayward boarding ramp, shattering the resisting pistons.
It slammed into the ground, and the Inquisitor stalked out, his servo-skull buzzing around his legs.
"Detective-Inquisitor Rosanthor. Ordo Hereticus. I'm going to need to be briefed."

The wounded were moved out to a more secure position. Field medics did their best to reattach C-C Ristani's leg.

Uschi refrained from smiling. An all-business type. That she could deal with.

"Understood, Detective-Inquisitor. At present there are an unknown number of mutineers aboard the Ramilies, supported by an unknown number of chaos space marines, specifically appearing to be members of the Emperor-damned Black Legion. We have approximately ninety-plus of our own personnel on board, led by our captain, who have just secured the infirmary and have at least one confirmed kill on a space marine."

Never hurts to show off a little, she thought.

"While I cannot commit this vessel beyond the bounds of what her captain authorizes, I am certain that he would be willing to offer you transportation and some amount of assistance in quelling this outbreak of heresy, Inquisitor."

Never hurts to remind him of the extra-legal independence of a Rogue Trader, too.

Rosanthor cracked a winning grin, replaced his helmet and turned back to what was left of the craft.
"How do you lot feel about dispensing some indiscriminate justice?"

Axidus caught the plasma blasts on his blade and returned fire with his storm bolter. The Kraken rounds tore throught the golem's skull, dropping it to the floor with a loud cland. That was the third he had killed and they were definitely a fiendish weapon of war. The had lost Skral to one of their attacks. He must capture someone who knew the secret of their construction if possible. They would be a useful weapon if deployed in large enough numbers. Abaddon would surely reward him for delivering such a weapon to the Black Legion. In the Eye of Terror they could tens of thousands and unleash them against the Imperium of the Corpse Emperor.

But now he had problems to solve. While these golems were giving him troubles, other cultists were being ground up by a psyker leading naval troops. That would be one of his targets. The fire team should be nearing the infirmery and then could detour to handle the psyker. By then he would be finished with this one ahead and everything would be under control.

Well, so long as 'indiscriminate justice' didn't involve turning her (relative to the station) ship's puny batteries loose on the star fort, she could deal with an overzealous inquisitor in most regards.

"We can deliver you to the battle zone," she informed him in an even tone.

Better you get your ass shot off than Engelier and our people, she thought cheerfully.

"They're closing in, Captain." Synnove informed him.

"Good, good, and we've got the patients out, right? And all manner of nasty surprises prepared for them? Chaplain! Time for some rousing words as we prepare to do battle once more!"

Chaplain Wystan cleared his throat and spoke, the voice ringing through the vox lines.

"The seeming courage of the heretic is not bravery, for in their black hearts they know that they are forever lost from the light of the Emperor. It is not strength of heart that drives them, but instead desperation, the fear of fools who have turned from salvation and know that only damnation awaits them. The strong fight with the light of the Emperor in their hearts, and let this flow through them in every action that they take. Be strong, brothers and sisters, and know always that His eye is upon you."

"Well spoken, Gervassius. Let's give them hell, my children." Engelier readied his weapon, smiling as a fresh flow of drugs entered his system.

Haekl had finished packing Toby's bag, and was following the two Arco-flagellants down the ramp.
The Jackal was still busy filling his own pouches with the late trader's merchandise.
Rosanthor was already making his way to the shuttle.

Meanwhile, in a completely different sector, something very bad was happening.

The honor guard eyed the inquisitor's entourage warily. It wasn't simple prejuidice... Emperor knows, stranger creatures had put their locomotive limbs down on that flight deck in the past... but wariness at recognizing the inherent lethality of the creatures passing them by.

Voleg tramped toward the infirmery. This whole thing was a colossal fuck up. If Abaddon didn't wack whoever was responsible for planning this, he was going to do it himself. They had lost too many battle brothers and to top it off the Strike Cruiser as well. Heads would roll. He looked foreward to doing some of the cutting.

The sniper sighted the lead chaos marine down his scope, a smile on his face. Hartrek was a popular man among his fellow mercenaries, a cheerful prankster who was nothing like the common stereotype of the cold and soulless sniper. He took a breath and released half of it, then squeezed the trigger.
