Alabama Judge Wears Ten Commandments on Robe

I know fundies are dumb, but so dumb that they can't remember the 10 Commandments and have to pin it to their robe? These guys just simply trying to shove things down other peoples' throat, not trying to preserve their own beliefs....

He should wear the ten punishments instead...

1. Ex. 22:20: He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

Capital punishment for, say, sacrificing a live chicken to Jobu. Someone better warn Pedro Serrano.

2. Lev. 24:16: And he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death.

Capital punishment for exercising the freedom of speech.

3. Ex. 31:15: Whosoever doeth any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

Capital punishment for working on Sundays (or whichever day you believe is the Sabbath). I'd be long dead by now.

4. Ex. 21:15: He that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.

This one makes sense. Shouldn't it apply to "smiting" anyone though?

5. Ex. 21:17: He that curseth his father or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

Guilty. Then again, I'm sure most of us at one time or another have "curseth'd" thy fathers and mothers. See you on Death Row.

6. Ex. 22:19: Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death.

Death for bestiality?! New Zealand would be a bloodbath...

7. Lev. 20:13: If a man lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death.

Why are all these religious lawmakers bothering with gay marriage when the Bible clearly says they must die?

8. Lev. 20:10: And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall be put to death.

My old workplace would probably be a ghost town if this ever happened...

9. Mark 16:16: He that believeth not, shall be damned.

That's right, you're damned for not believing. I guess I'll see the rest of you non-believers in Hell, where there'll be much wailing and gnashing of teeth for all eternity. Meanwhile, Jerry Falwell goes to Heaven...

10. Mal. 2:1-4: And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you. If you will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart to give glory to my name,...behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces.

Uh, okay...

Let's see. He claims that he has the Commandments embroidered on his robe as a reminder to himself. But if others can read them, wouldn't they be upside-down from his point of view? Unless the text is upside down to begin with, like that on the shirt of this individual:

Why doesn't he just have them printed on a piece of paper on his desk? No, not shoving religion down anyone's throat. Oh, no indeed.

Does he even realise that the 1st-3rd commandments go against the First Amendment, and that the 10th commandment (possibly the 5th as well) would be considered legally untestable?

Well fucking duh. Of course these measures have no other point. There never was a point to such things beyond that and whatever they claim that's the truth. Fundamentalist religion isn't about your morals, it's about imposing them on everyone. And these sorts of people get the message loud and clear.

Exhibit A for instituting a uniform for judges.

I'm sure this is a wonderful free speach vs establishment case to ponder, but I'm all for adopting a uniform and short circuiting that. I'm sure the fundies would readily agree if we can get some judges to sport wiccan, satanist, or other beleif statements on their own clothing.

This is just....frustrating. Every time I start to think that maybe the South would be a cool place to live for a few years, something like this happens and brings me straight back to the reality of the South being a fundie paradise. I guess living in Wisconsin kind of gives me a warped view of the rest of the country. If a judge pulled something like this in Madison, he'd be fucking hanged. It's just hard to imagine this being acceptable to a community, but there is Alabama standing in defiance of that logic. It just makes me sad.
