She sighed. "Mekel's words to us before he tried to take us was 'Your flesh will serve as a vehicle to one of the higher forms'. I am not a student of daemonology, thank the Emperor, but it sounded heretical to me. With what has recently occurred, I felt it better to err on the side of caution and notify the Inquisition of the matter. You can fully well understand why we didn't care to be around for the aftermath, however."
She did a very good job of covering her wince. Cracking the books for an outsider was about as pleasant an option as folding the charter into a paper airplane and sending it flying down the corridors of the ship.
Her jaw firmly set, she nodded. "Of course. Anything to further the aims of His Majesty's Holy Inquisition."

Getting station security to tell her where the various inquisitors had last been seen was easy for Severa. Pater's rendevous caused him to raise eyebrows. "Two inquistors. What are the odds on that?"
His inquisitional rosette got him aboard the Wager, which seemed to expect a Waargh to errupt from the station at any moment. They weren't happy to see him, or D'eckor. He didn't need the sergeant's eye to know these men and women were skilled professionals. They sure as hell didn't was him anywhere near their captain. Too bad.

"Captain Engelier was a devout believer in the Emperor, Inquisitor," she said tightly. "He felt obliged to intervene on behalf of the Emperor's servants in restoring order to the station. He died after mortally wounding a traitor marine."
She watched uncomfortably as Pater's eye roamed through the dataslates, showing the pattern of dealings with Melek going back thirty years, to the time when Captain Valdis commanded the ship.

The door opened and through the portal came Jolan Gix. Hethor remained outside. "Captain, " he said bowing slightly. "Inquisitor," he said. "My name is Jolan Gix. A rather interesting pattern lead me here. Two different inquisitors aboard your ship in very short period of time, in the middle of a system wide upheavel. As you can imagine, I am very curious captain."

"Inquisitor Rosanthor was aboard several days ago. And now there is all kind of interesting comms activity, combined with the slaughter of a prominent merchant banker in one of the more prestigious establishments on the planet. An orbital shuttle from your ship was spotted nearby. Care to comment, captain?"

So the mighty guardians of the Imperium have nothing better to do than 'get curious' and follow each other around harrassing honest traders, she thinks. It's so reassuring to know that their methodology consists of figuring out where all the others are going and chasing in the same direction.
She nods at Gix, a sour look on her face. "As I explained to Inquisitor Novum here, Melek tried to doublecross us, and behaved in what I felt to be a heretical fashion in the process. So I attempted to inform Inquisitor Rosanthor of this matter, and now..."
Now all you weasel-faced bastards are pawing around my ship.
"Now you are all here to follow up."

"I'll leave this matter in your hands Pater," said Gix as he handed the data slate back after surepticiously dumping their contents. "The dirtside investigation sounds more promising. It is entirely likely that the individuals in question were trying to flee while they were still one step ahead of us."

She nods and taps the comm. "Sergeant Margarte to the Captain's office."
Within seconds, Margarte is through the door and standing at attention.
"Reporting, captain," she said with IG parade-ground precision, her eyes fixed on the wall.
Of course, she's been watching the inquisitors since they came onboard, so she's already gotten an idea of what sort of weapons they're packing and so on.

At about that point, those in the room heard footsteps in the corridor outside, and the door opened to admit Inquisitor Adivan, currently wearing long grey robes over his power armour. His eyebrows shot up in surprise as he noted the other Inquisitors in the room.
"Well, well, well. I hadn't expected to see all of you in here at once. Mind explaining what's going on?"
Inwardly, he sighed. I wonder how long it will be before I can discuss those weapons... if they're even still here by the time the others are done.

"The bird let out a slow chicken cackle. It sounded like a chicken, but in her heart she knew it wasn't. In that instant, she completely understood the concept of a chicken that was not a chicken. This looked like a chicken, like most of the Mud People's chickens. But this was no chicken.

"You could," Adivan nodded, "and the answer is that I wanted to see if the ship was hauling anything worth buying. You?"

Gix raised his eyebrow. "Do happen to be carrying a cargo composed relics personally blessed by the primarchs or are you just having a real bad day?"
Hethor eyed the mess. Too many officers always fucked things up, even good ones. The traders seemed to be of the same mind, but like good crunchies were smart enough not to say it. They looked like a tough bunch. In a fight they'd probably wound him before he cleared the corridor.

"You're here because of the cargo, I'm here because of a cult sighting, and Inquisitor Gix is here because you and I are here. Pardon me."
He turned to the Security Officer. He knew her type; Pleasantries would be wasted. "Sergeant Margarte. I would like to know about anything you noticed about your assailants' weaponry, equipment, level of training and so forth."
