what would it take for the Galactic alliance to get together a Fleet of Capital Ships, say 100 in strength, together?

I was simply wondering because there is all this talk of command ships and such huge numbers of ships out there that i wonder how many ships there are in relation to actual number of systems.

I also have trouble with what they call fleets in the EU

EX. The 'fleet' that general solo had under his command during his battles with Zsinj was only a small number in strength as i recall.
-Mon Remonda
-Mon Karren
-Mon Delindo
-ISD Skyhook
-ISD Crynyd
-Battle Dog
-quasar fire bulk crusier
-rebel blockade runner
-Marauder Corvette

thats only nine ships minus the numerous fighters they carried and four of those arent exactly suited for taking on a SSD with a small fleet of its own.

Lets look a a smaller fleet. how bout Isards?
-Luksankya an SSD
-Virulence an ISD
-Avarice an ISD
-Corrupter a VSD

thats even smaller for a fleet albeit the amount of guns contributed by the SSD is considerable, it is quite capable of crushing an enemy.

Given that the author's are provided with information from WEG - including the ISB, I wonder how hard it'd be for them to loook at the Sector Group Organization stats and find out their grand fleets were smaller than what the Empire said was necessary for assaulting single industrialized worlds (one Superiority Fleet).

How Many Ships in a Fleet?

Depends. Fleet sizes aren't set. But I'd say a Fleet is generally made up of more than 10 Capital ships.

A fleet IS just an organisational structure to provide logistical and adminstrative support after all.

Someone clarify this, but the definition of fleet in the USN has varied from dozens of ships back in WWII to just a CVN with a handful of cruisers and destroyers.

Asking how big a fleet is is like asking how big an Air Force wing is. The 47th, from which I used to fly with, had more aircraft than all of PACAF, which had at least eight wings assigned to it.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

A CVN with its escorts is a Carrier Battle Group, not a fleet. The US 7th Fleet (Japan/Western Pacific) includes 1 CVN, 3 CG, 1 LCC, 3 DDG, 1 DD, 2 FFG, 1 LHP, 1 LPD, 2 LSD, 2 MCM, 2 SSN's, and a few other miscellaneous ships. That's 19 ships, and because 7th Fleet is forward deployed, it's not as strong as other fleets. It includes 1 Carrier Battle Group, 1 Amphibious Strike Group, and assorted other groups. (www.c7f.navy.mil)

3rd Fleet, based in the Eastern Pacific (San Diego, Pearl Harbor, and Puget Sound) is considerably larger, numbering three or four CVN's, and dozens of other ships and submarines. (www.c3f.navy.mil)

3rd Fleet and 7th Fleet are both part of the Pacific Fleet (maybe 100 combatants, total)

In general term a fleet is a group of ships capable projecting force in their designated area of operation, and/or act as deterrent against hostile forces.
so it can really be anything from a destroyer to a carrier group. This is from operational point of view.
