"I do, Inquisitor." Pater looked at Adivan coldly. "I suggest, if it meets with your approval, that we inspect the Juducial Records for the last known sighting of Xerxes."

"That would be a good start. I did some checking after the Traitor Marine boarding attempt was beaten off, looking down the casualties list; Xerxes was on it, and in an infirmary, a few floors away from the Inquisitorial casualties. We shall have to see if anyone has seen him since."

Prius blinked at that. It was the first he'd heard of Xerxes whereabouts at all, but the confusion of the battle had made the data processing hectic at best. They still hadn't even properly catalogued the dead, nor sorted out those who would go on the Roll of Heroes and those who would be condemned as the Unworthy Dead.

"Do you wish for me to inquire at the infirmary?" he asks, hefting the shotgun over his shoulder again.

"Somebody will have to. You can do it if you like, or I can detail a Stormtrooper to do it. Now... let's go have a look at those records."

Several minutes later....

"Well. One minute the Infirmary has one Medicae and Xerxes in it, the next it has 10 dead bodies, medicae and wounded trooper alike, and no Xerxes. I think we should look at any Missing Persons files after the battle; It'll be hard, there's still a lot of vandalism and cultism that could obscure what we're looking for."

These inquisitors and their 'if you like' or 'whatever you want' confuse him terribly. If he wasn't so certain of their valor in battle, he would be highly suspicious of their unnatural permissiveness.

(Although Gix rose highly in his estimation by giving him the order to come here and restore order, an action worthy of the Emperor's approval, to be certain.)

He had accepted, and recieved a voxed report that the infirmary had turned up full of dead bodies.

He willed for the lift to move faster, that he could arrive and investigate the scene.

"And perhaps," Adivan said, staring down at the report in question, "we should begin questioning the Arbites under Xerxes' command, and see if he was acting at all strangely during the battle... or before."

"Sit down and someone will be with you in a moment, colonel-commissar," the medicae ordered him.

"I'm not here for treatment," he said testily. "I'm here to investigate what..."

He staggered as a fresh wave of dizziness struck, then pivoted before falling to the floor in a clatter of shotgun, body, and augmetic limbs.

Pater was just about to reply to Adivan when the Medicae at the infirmary voxxed him. He groaned.
"What?" Asked Adivan.
"The idiot has only gone and fainted due to pushing himself too hard. Again."

"Well, at least he found the right place to do it. Sergeant Desmet?"

One of the Stormtroopers standing outside the Records office entered, holstering her hellgun, and saluted smartly.

"Yes, Inquisitor?"

"Take two troopers with you, and get down to Infirmary 7b. I want the details of the killings there a few days back. We sent Prius, but he collapsed on arrival."

"At once, Inquisitor."

She turned and shouted out into the corridor.

"Cachola! Deloye! With me! The Inquisitor has a job for us."

The two selected troopers snapped equally smart salutes and then set off down the corridor toward the lifts.

Adivan turned back to Pater.

"Now, you were saying...?"

Severa glanced around the captain's cabin. "Nice. Logs and records. All of them. Now." She looked at the others in the room. "Everyone leave. Just me and the captain." Severa waited for everyone to leave and then closed the door. "I know that some parts of ship's business shouldn't be conducted in anything less than an absolute need to know basis. So if you've got something to say, say it.".

Synnove cleared out as Uschi began handing over dataslates. She looked Severa and shook her head. "There's nothing in there that isn't authorized by the charter."

Reaching down, she pressed her thumb to the safe under the desk. A sensor probe extended, and she guided it to her eye for a retinal scan.

"The captain's logs, and private journal, and confidential transaction records," she said as she added another set of slates to the pile.

"How long has this ship held a charter?" Severa asked as she began to go through the data slates. She had a lot of practice at this, and the nack too. If her career hadn't been killed, she would have been promoted a long time ago. But that was in the past.

"This ship has held charter for six thousand, four hundred and seventy-two years, at least this particular charter. The charter itself has been in force for ten thousand, five hundred and forty-seven years." Uschi answered in a neutral tone.

"Impressive. That's quite the legacy to live up to. Did you expect to inherit the charter?"

"It was in Enge... Captain Fulgenzio's will and testament, a fact he informed me of when he wrote it up. He didn't have any children, or family that he communicated with. He considered the crew to be his family."

You don't know half of the 'legacy to live up to' business, bitch.

Severa smiled grimley. "Your very good at hiding your emotions captain, but your control is too good. It gives it away. You need to losen up. It looks more natural. How's business?"

"Prior to losing our captain to a chaos marine he just fatally wounded and then having to kill an old customer because he apparently was engaged in heretical activities, business was good. Diversion of fleet shipping to deal with the recent Cadian difficulties meant hull space was at a premium," she said, then looked at Severa directly. "And I didn't think you would care for me to pretend some sort of enthusiasm for this process."

Adivan nodded.

"Yes. I'll be doing that once we finish examining these records."

He busied himself examining the records for a while, before standing with a sigh.

"Nope, nothing else in my pile. Have you found anything?"

Severa shuffled data slates. "No, I don't. Nor do I care," which was a lie since the captain was furious and Hethor had alreay stated his opinion about the best way of handling this. "But suppossing you have a future after this, it wouldn't hurt your negotiating skills." She smiled briefly. "Ah the books. I don't suppose you were smart enough to hand me the real ones? Occassionally that does happen. Maybe one time in five. I will be crosschecking. If you've "accidently" handed me the wrong set, now would be the time to correct it."

"Well, there's plenty of odd deaths and dissapearances; Hardly surprising, under the circumstances. Nothing I can pin down as a lead." He sighed. "If only criminals left an easily-followed trail, like in the 'Tec slates."

She shook her head. "I'm well aware that now isn't the time for amateurish stunts. You've got the books. Everything is catalogued down to private weight/space allowances utilized by the crew."

Pater stretched and twirled his mechanical hand 360 degrees. "I'll investigate some of the crime scenes. There's nothing like going there in person. Mork?" He tapped the dataslates into a neat pile and left the room, followed by his gigantic bodyguards.
