Weren't you one of the people that was trying to tell me before that Israel was a liberal tolerant society who's all it's hardcore fundie nutcases live seperate from everyone in their little desert forts and the conservative influence on the Knesset wasn't a big thing?
There are 3 basic trends in the Knesset. Conservative vs liberal and hawkish vs dovish and fundie vs secularist. Right now hawkish vs dovish is dominating the Knesset. Most Israelis would love to sell the fundie settlers up the river ...
IF it brought a lasting peace.
As I said before, the current violence is driving the electorate into the hawkish camps. You have hawkish secularlists like Shinui, you have hawkish liberals, and you have hawkish conservatives. The fundie hawks are a minority, and one much of the population would have no problem dumping if they weren't reliable political bed partners. Most Israelis care about
security first and foremost. Even of those who are racists, many would love to see the far flung religious settlements go. They'd rather put the funds which subsidize the security of the settlements go into either the general budget or into security for the main population blocs in Israel.
The next generation, not the current electorate, is going to be worse because:
a. The fundies outbreed everyone else.
b. The non-fundies emigrate disproportionately.
The longer the Palestinians wait, the more these trends will express themselves.
Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.
