*mutters quietly* see, anti christian bigotry. OK maybe I might be generalizing, but then again you generalize, saying all christians are fundie bigots. From an objective point of view, funny though.Slartibartfast wrote:New sig. You like?

Yeah, but I barely got through trig. the "practical" maths (geometry, statistics) I'm fairly good at, but the more "theoretical" ones (algebra, trig, calc) I'm not so good at. Those are how I view them, I know all math is practical in some way, it's just that I'm not good at certain types of math for some reason (and I must say the SAT's math section is really pathetically easy).King Cosmos wrote:The Dark wrote:Any books on this that are relatively easy to read (as in no calculus)?Archaic` wrote: Actually, there is. Just like programming, math builds up on each other. I did good in Calculus 1 and 2, I don't know if I want to take Calculus 3. I did hear that Abstract Alegrba was not a math course to take. Our Calculus teacher said you do stuff like "Prove 1 + 1 = 2." I looked it up on the internet, and that crap is just bizzare. I guess the practicality of it all would depend on what your career happens to be.

Slarti, that's rather childish.

Unfortunately, "So many fundies . . . so few lions" just doesn't have the same zing to it

Pure math does have a point, because better mathematical techniques can translate directly to improvement in technology For example, most modern engineering relies heavily on calculus. A more modern example would be the difference in key lengths between elliptic-curve cryptography and standard cryptography, or theoretical improvements which can significantly reduce brute-force key cracking times. (Crypto is big field for applied mathematics).King Cosmos wrote:Just like programming, math builds up on each other. I did good in Calculus 1 and 2, I don't know if I want to take Calculus 3. To get back to the Dark's orginal point, we can't all be experts (or even particularly competent) at everything - I have a pretty good grasp of a lot of things, but my calculus is rusty, my physics is rusty, my biology was never that good to start with, my knowledge of the law is questionable, my approach to fixing my car is to take it to a mechanic, etc, etc.
I can't do everything for myself - so I rely on other people whose talents and interests lie in areas other than mine. Which means I'm perfectly happy for other people to not be knowledgeable in the areas I'm both good at and interested in. The number of people who genuinely need advanced mathematics in every day life is actually pretty small (engineers & scientists, basically).
