Call of Duty...Holy Shit!

Post by MKSheppard »

This is the FPS I've been waiting for a long time...I got it for christmas
and I'm oh, 2 levels in already...

No spoilers, people!

You really DO feel like you're part of a team, rather than one lone
guy running around saving the day singlehandedly, and the submachine
guns are perfectly modelled, showing why they were so lethal in WWII,
you can gun down a roomfull of soldiers or spray a doorway with gunfire,
as they're accurate enough close up, which is a rather good change from the
usual FPS Fare of SMGs being so horribly inaccurate at all ranges that you
have to do short bursts to have a chance of hitting your target...

Erm ... Shep ... mate ... you're like ... a year overdue. Call of Duty rocked. The first Soviet mission is gold.

I never got United Offensive though. I really should. But that means I have to re-install Call of Duty too ...

United Offensive is just as good/better than Call of Duty(Though much harder in the Soviet part)

You been missing the best WWII game by far Shep glad your finaly on the CoD train
And one last thing, Shep yes you will absoutly love the first Soviet Level though the second one Charge across Red Square is pretty good to(And BTW the Console version of Red Square sucked big ones compared to the CoD verison)

My fauvorite mission was that insane ride through german lines in a captured car, in the american campaign. Some of the one liners there were simply golden :)

This game reminded me of some great war movies. I won't name them now, not to spoil MK's fun, but there are others that know what I am talking about.

Pegasus Bridge was good, simply because far too many of the other Brit levels were "one man army" missions which just fell a bit too far from the rest of the CoD tree. Thankfully thats fixed in UO.

But yes - its true, the Soviets get flatly the BEST fucking missions in the series. Though in UO the final American setpiece where you have to hold the mansion is just hella fun (12 melee kills on that mission - yeah, you run out of ammo A LOT).

Hmm, on the Brits only the Tirpitz and the Dam seemed "one-man army", but Tirpitz was kinda poor. The storming of the Reichstag was a bit of letdown, I thought, but the tank battle across the Oder was cool, and Pavlov's House was AWESOME

Oh yeah, the bridge was CLASSIC! I was never so frantic in a video game before! Running back and forth, scrambling for guns and munitions, throwing nades when I had nothing else.. jumping in trenches, fun stuff.

Man, when I played it, I set myself up really bad on that level. It saved when I was at a strange point with a tank right there and no ammo. Took me days to get passed it. I could have just restarted but I was too pissed and wanted to do it. But now that I think about it, it is a very cool level.

WHile I love the first game - United Offensive just didn't do it for me like the original game did. I also hate the little 'realism' twicth that when I shoot someone with my rifle - be it garand, German or Russian it ALWAYS takes more than one shit to put someone down. There's never a one shot one kill effect unless there's a headshot. Do you seriously expect me to believe that anyone shot by a rifle did not go down with one shot, that it took two or three shots (the default seems to be three shots to take someone down) At first I enjoyed that little effetc - oh look he's still twitching and he's slowly getting up to fight again. But when its repeated ad nauseam throughout every scenario it gets old real fast.

Plus I also am not a big fan of the uberness of United Offensive. Some of thos missions are freaking HARD. But not just the last one in each batch, they are all just ridiculoulsy difficult. It's like they decided, look we're only giving them about 10 hours of game play but to justify the price lets just crank up the difficulty to make em spend 30 hours trying to beat it.

There's no fucking fun in having to do that Foi bridge crossing mission over three nights to finally beat it. It's not fun anymore. It's fucking monotnous work.

My friend got this on XBox. We were dying to do multiplayer, but it doesn't have a split screen option.

Console verison is completly diffrent from PC verisons not just because of controls but lots of pretty and long death animations means mutiple bullets into already dead germans

Finished it.

The Soviet Missions fucking ruled. Pavlov's house was insane, run
back and forth and machine gun people down, and then take a tank ride
across the Oder  And nothing I've seen in a long time beats
the image of T-34-85s firing on the Reichstag as you storm it.

Not quite as much if you are watching careful you can see the flagrunner crossing the street as you go in and then he catches up with you just as you make it to the roof and look over a devistated city as they plant the flag

Playing CoD on HQ mode at a LAN.

6 of us Great Members of the Reich vs 8 dirty communist swine. The map is Stalingrad (I think thats it - the one with the sewers and everything else).

Anyhow - The radio was ours. A great German Radio! A piece of engineering to be proud of. And to defend. To our deaths (which didn't happen often).

Final score - 450 to nil. Our motherfucking radio.

Another recent CoD experience, still in HQ mode.

Mal, one of the great gods of "realistic" and "semi-realistic' FPS at the LAN took out the entire German team twice over in less than 6 seconds (NO - REALLY, they rushed the base, he nailed them all, then they respawned right on top of him and he took them all out again). 12 kills in 6 seconds. Only the PPSh could rock that hard.

Foy is crack with 40+ players on HQ. Capturing the church radio is damn near impossible. 10 people set up with LMGs inside the doorway, snipers and AT guys in the tower, across the street, and 2 Shermans sitting out front. We got over 1,000 kills in a 5 hour long match and they STILL didnt capture the radio. God, that was yummy...

I used to be utterly unstoppable with a Garand, Mauser, or Mosin-Nagant. Haven't played in awhile though, and I was never a huge fan of the vanilla CoD multiplay, Heat of Battle is nice though.

Likewise. I'm an insane shot with a Mosin-Nagant in particular. Most of the time I don't even bother with the scoped version. :)
