Pater's ship was actually pretty much fixed thanks to the parts bought from the Traders. Nevertheless, he deferred to Nathan.

Synnove reread the inquisitor's message in the privacy of her quarters. It seemed somewhat out of character for the stern and rather tightlipped inquisitor Novum. It was almost as if he were attempting to be charming.

That was a truly disturbing prospect.

"Rogue Traders as a standard have a full company of Astartes and two full companies of Army..I mean guard to aid them in there exploratory missions beyond Imperial borders.Then again that was in my day....."

"A Mars sounds like a good choice. Launch bays, a Nova cannon, and some of most long-ranged guns in the fleet - if it has to engage Chaos warships, it will at least be able to shoot back without having to close in. A squadron of Swords or Firestorms might be a good idea, though - Cobras can be extremely effective when they employ their torpedoes, but they're relatively lightly armoured, and their conventional firepower leaves much to be desired."

"Their's been mass uprising."

"Status. Supressed, at least dirtside. The cultisists have mass suicided. But there's problems all over the subsector."

"Mass suicide? Sound ritualistic." Jolan pulled himself to his feet. "Their response?"

"Nuking the hive."

"After the suicide? They're just going to feed it more souls. Get me the commodore. We need to cancel and evacuate the city to other hives. We can impress a couple hundred thousand men into additional Guard units. Status of the archaeotech?"

"They're considering evacuation."

"It's a good idea. Lead me to them."

Gix strode into the midst of the other inquisitors.

"Gentlemen, I understand you have been busy while I have been recuperating. As I understand it the situation has changed signifigantly. Primus, there are uprisings throughout the subsector. Secondus, there were uprisings on three hive cities that ended with mass suicicdes of the heretics. Tertiararily, orbital bombardment of these now secure sites is being considered. Am I correct?"

"I agree that we have to take the offensive. I fail to see how feeding millions of souls to a possible chaos ritual is anything but aiding the enemy. I fail to see how destroying useful industries than arm regiments all over this sector is productive action. I fail to see how killing millions of potential soldiers aids us. If this is necessary, produce your reasoning."

"No. You are wrong. We're tired of always being on the defensive, and plan to eliminate high-risk, low-return sectors of the Hives that are known to house abhumans and heretics. That will free up our remaining forces to assist the rest of the subsector."

I agree with any proposal to move the archaeotech, or even to temporarily evacuate these cities. We can draft millions from the refugees to help secure the sector."

We have not had adequate time to truly determine the loyalty of the populace, and in my opinion it would be incredibly dangerous to conscript regiments from a planet with uncertain loyalties. Inquisitor Talstrem has found reason to question the Planetary Governor, and so far as I know we are completely unsure as to how far the rot has spread."

He could live without the obliteration of the hives, and now that Gix has brought the fact that it might feed the enemy to his attention, perhaps it's for the best. But the notion of drafting mass armies from this world makes him very nervous indeed.

Incident four: The defection of numerous Naval Personell to Chaos during the Black Legion invasion.

Incident five: The construction of an unknown, Archaeotech-based Chaos Escort cruiser in secret. Also the defection of the command crews of several supposedly loyal Warships.

Incident six: The mass rioting of numerous Chaos cults in 3 seperate hives, all heavily armed.

He wonders how the Inquisitors resolve these disputes. He knows that if another commissar spoke to him thusly, they would resolve the matter as gentlemen, crossing their chainswords on the field of honor.

"All the heretics and mutants you are pointing to committed suicide. And there is nothing surgical about an orbital strike. Your talking about obliterating cities which loyal troops control. How does killing arbites soldiers who have just fought to defend the Emperor's cities aid us?"

"Use your brain. A statistically signifigant percentage of the human population are mutants. Every hive city has them. Hunting heretics is our business. Get a real reason."

"Use yours, instead of your loins. Dark Age-era ships are more than capable of precise bombardments. Also, I fail to see how any Inquisitor worth his salt could have failed to notice the large percentage of Mutants and beggars making up the Chaos forces that have assaulted us recently. If your way of winning a civil war is to stand there an take it like a man while your friends are gunned down around you I can see why you stayed an Interrogator for so long."
