Jerry Orbach dead at 69
Actor best known for 'Law & Order'

NEW YORK (AP) -- "Law & Order" star Jerry Orbach has died of prostate cancer at 69, a representative of the show said Wednesday.

Orbach died Tuesday night in Manhattan after several weeks of treatment, Audrey Davis of the public relations agency Lippin Group said.

When his illness was diagnosed, he had begun production on NBC's upcoming spinoff "Law & Order: Trial By Jury," after 12 seasons playing Detective Lennie Briscoe in the original series. His return to the new show had been expected early next year.

On Broadway, the Bronx-born Orbach starred in hit musicals including "Carnival," "Promises, Promises" (for which he won a Tony Award), "Chicago" and "42nd Street."

Among his film appearances were roles in "Dirty Dancing," "Prince of the City" and "Crimes and Misdemeanors

Boy, this year has just decided to take quite a few people with it before its over. Law & Order just wasn't the same without him.

Damn it, I will miss him... Law and Order is the only show I watch, and I was looking foreward to the new series.... *sad panda*

Shit! And just when I was getting into L&O with Jerry who I would've loved to have as a grandfather.

We've lost way too many good celebrities this year.

He was a great actor and damn did he make L&O that much mroe fun to watch. My condolences go out to his family and in the meantime I guess i'll just have to go watch more L&O on DVD.

They had already written Lennie Briscoe out of the main L&O series; he transferred to the new spinoff focussed on the D.A's squad. I understand he filmed three or four episodes of it before he became too sick to work.

I barely watch any television, so I know not of his L.A.O. work. However, as an animation fan, I know him as Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast.. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

Normally, I'm not moved by the death of a celebrity but I was sad to hear he passed away.
