Where would you live ?
Being an average joe I would prefer the Old Republic. Sure the Empire has great oppurtunitys like commanding star destroyers but an average joe wont make that far. Plus the Old Republic is a secure and safe place to live an ordinary life. In the Empire one could get caught in the Rebel vs Empire war.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.
The more I think about it, the tougher it is.
The OR, you have corruption and unscrupulous multistellar conglomerates screwing up your life (the TF), and the Clone Wars will eventually erupt and bring a few years of strife and many more of reconstruction... the Jedi are idiots, and more than a little worrisome. The bureaucracy runs everything, and this can't be a good thing.
The Empire has the nice little fascist thing going on, which is good if you're the one who happens to be wearing the jackboot, but since I likely wouldn't as an average joe, I'm still in a world of shit. Plus, Emperor Palpatine's grand design of a dark side theocracy makes me think I would be better off with the Rebellion...
Then you have the New Republic, who bring about the standard debate: is it better to have evil, but competent, or nice but inept? The Yuzhan Bongbong are gonna come eventually and have a party on Coruscant, which will probably screw you over as well. The NR leadership is idiotic, the military seems to succeed more on luck than any other attribute, and that is franklu terrifying... and the Jedi under Skywalker seem to be decentralised and 'free agents', and I don't know if that's better or worse than the OR Jedi. Probably better...
I really don't fucking know which one to choose. It seems whichever you DO choose, you're screwed in some different way...

I went with the Empire. Their military offers better oppurtunites than either the OR (mostly clones) or the NR (idiots). Plus with their medical tech I am virtually gaurenteed that they can patch up anything short of major psych problems.
In short lots of oppurtunities for the military man in me.

Gonna vote Empire. I'm an Administrator and a damn good one, every facist regime needs good Admin and i'd do ok.
However for the average bloke on the street one goverment is gonna be very similar to another. Under the Empire the economy is atleast booming, The Empire is massive and it's military expansion is generating billions of jobs. Earis good for business.

I don't think there where smugglers in the OR. IIRC from some of the Zahn books, which i don't have near me at the moment, Talon Karde indicates that smugglers where something that came about as a result of the Empire.Petrosjko wrote:If I had the opportunity to get into the smuggling biz I'd definitely go OR, but I'm assuming 'average citizen with lack of capital', hence my vote for NR.

Uh... no way. There are smugglers everywhere. And the OR was corrupt and self-serving, so chances are there were perhaps even more smugglers than under the empire. It's just a facet of criminals... they're apolitical. They're going to operate whether it was under the Empire or Republic, Old or New, here or there.Lord Pounder wrote:I don't think there where smugglers in the OR. And I don't think Karde ever said anything quite like that, though I need to read the books to be sure.

Problem here is that the Galactic Republic (aka the Old Republic) is about 25,000 years old and I dout it began as corrupt and self-serving. So I can't where would I live untill I know of what era Old Republic we're talking about.
I may be an idiot, but I'm a tolerated idiot

Yeah, in KotOR Jolee Bindo says that he used to be a smuggler, so there were definitly smugglers at that time.Stofsk wrote: Uh... no way. There are smugglers everywhere. And there's also two smugglers in Medstar 2: Jedi Healer.
Personally I would go with the Old Republic, as racism is looked down upon and it's more competent than the New Republic.
It's a good bet to assume the era on offer is the era that's been covered. As you say, 25K is a long time and it must have been different throughout all that time, yet the only periods we really know about is those that are covered by the prequels and by the Tales of the Jedi comics and KOTOR computer games.Lord Revan wrote:Problem here is that the Galactic Republic (aka the Old Republic) is about 25,000 years old and I dout it began as corrupt and self-serving. Seriously it does no good to say "I wanna live in the OR, but a century previous to Palpy coming back and the CW and so on..." because, well, no-one KNOWS what it was like back then. It hasn't been covered. I could say the same thing "I live in the NR, but decades/centuries after the Yuzhan Vong invasion, and after the reconstruction etc" but it would still be speculating. How do I know it wouldn't be worse? Same goes for those who want to live in the OR, but 600 years before the Battle of Endor. How do you know it's any better? You don't.

True the Core worlds were more or less OK during KOTOR (Malak hadn't invaded them because they were so well defended, during the Clone Wars the war came to Corusant and other Core worlds.Stofsk wrote:It's a good bet to assume the era on offer is the era that's been covered. I'm generally going off quotes that say how nice and peaceful the OR has been for the 100 years and only recenlty theSenate has been getting more and more corrupt.Stofsk wrote: Same goes for those who want to live in the OR, but 600 years before the Battle of Endor. Probably New Republic .... I already live under a militarist leader who follows a hokey religion, I'd like to try something new.

I went with Old Republic. Sure there may be a huge corrupt goverment, but at least they don't have a reputation of storming onto private property and killing people at will like the Empire. Plus, the New Republic era is extremely chaotic. Rival Warlords, Alien Invasions, a lot of civies were bound to get caught in the cross fire.
The thing about star wars though, is that there are so many back water, uninhabited planets that you could run off and live comfortably on, with out the current goverment caring too much. So if you don't like the goverment you can take you family and friends and go live in solitude.

Do you know whats coming? If so I'd rather live after the films and books etc. have all finished.
Living in the old republic, but knowing that whatever you did it would all colapse would be pretty terrible.

New Republic. The Empire has been dealt with and yet all their cool shit is left lying around for the taking. I'll go live on Naboo and have my own AT-ST and a few other souvenirs and hunker down humping Twi'lek chicks and let the Vong wear themselves out.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

Since the Republic has been in its current form (ever since the last Sith War 1,000 years before TPM) the Republic was peaceful and prosperous. Nothing big happened until the Battle of Naboo. Why do you think the Republic had no real military since the "formation of the Republic" a thousand years before? We know nothing major happens in that timeframe so it's not speculation that things would be fine. It's not comparable to post-NJO at all.Stofsk wrote:Seriously it does no good to say "I wanna live in the OR, but a century previous to Palpy coming back and the CW and so on..." because, well, no-one KNOWS what it was like back then. I don't think the Empire cared about skin color. They were racist against aliens and biased against females, but I never heard anything about them caring about black, white, etc.Enforcer Talen wrote:empire. as a white male human, Im ahead of the game already, and Ive always wanted a sd.
Then again, all Imperials have british accents, so maybe the Empire only accepts brits?
Reminds me of ThumbWars...
"Any questions?"
"Uh, why do we all have British accents when we're in space and there is no Britain?"

Although living in the OR does have its advantages, I would perfer to live in the Empire just because of all the oppurtunities you could have.
