Appears to be ye old genocidal clusterfuck, trashing everything of value in that area.

Edit: If I could be dropped somewhere in the north eastern region of the galaxy, that would be great.

Er...yeah, isn't that Great Waste thing a tad...horridly immense? The Sixth's astrography, with a little slight editting of history, fits Waste space well, though, with the one shattered planet fitting the profile for a low-yield penetrative antigravity weapon quite well. And BFE-010...well, that's downright perfect, the planets had to go somewhere :)

Come now, did that really warrent size 2?
It might also be lack of a complete map. If you don't know your neighbor is, it's a little hard to conduct diplomacy. I myself am waiting to see where everyone is before I go shopping for friends.

The Boyd Collective took up pretty much the entire right hemisphere of the galaxy, at a high level of development. In the final days of the ASVS game, it was completely destroyed by its own strategic weapons--there was no longer a single living person in the entirety of the territory. The size of the fleets and the levels of firepower being deployed by the end of the game got fairly extreme, there was a fleet of planetoid-sized vessels ravaging, and so on. And after that got resolved down, there was another big problem. The Kzin lived in a parallel universe and had previously made minor, failed incursions against the STGOD galaxy. Something bad happened in their home universe, and they fled here like the Germans before the Huns. The STGOD universe powers had been weakened to the point that they had to compete on almost equal terms, and everyone battled to exhaustion repeatedly for a long time, so that whatever hadn't been smashed up by Halite et al. certainly was smashed up now--and in the end, the most aggressive 75% of every generation of Kzin warriors was killed, so that after a while they were bred to relative docility and things could calm down. After that there was a rather long gap, during which the rebuilding process began to take hold and the new powers (read: everyone but the Quadruple Entente) developed.

You can think of the game right now as being the worst possible dark age. The "Great Waste" territories aren't empty by any means, there are still groups of people living there, and there are pretty large reserves of natural resources laying around. This was a plot point in STGOD2, because the population of the galaxy has dropped such that resources exceed needs by a huge proportion, making mercantilism the best economic policy.

The point of putting the great waste on the map is to make sure that people don't think "Oooh! Empty space! I automatically triple the size of my territory!" Colonization of these messed up areas is actually a very slow process, and despite continuous and aggressive efforts, the most that anybody expanded the absolute territorial extent of their nations was maybe 10% in the course of the entire game.

Assuming you are "colonizing" worlds with people on them, is there any major difference between rim territories and the Great Waste territories?

There would probably be more people on them, at a higher level of development, but that's not necessarily a good thing because it makes it very possible that if you try to take them by force, they'll appeal to somebody for help (probably the UTR or SKS).

I just looked up the poat post where Boyd blew up. People who live in the Great Waste region will have no shortage of itty bitty pieces of former planets.

That fits pretty well with the Quylthulg nomadic asteroid miner background. The waste region should still be fit for wide area low-intensity/subsistence level mineral extraction, if nothing else.
I prepared Explosive Runes today.

About the map:

The Azegart Empire is nominally independent, with the exception of the two provinces to the southwest, which are directly controlled by the Commonwealth. Also, the People's Republic of Corneria no longer exists- all that's left is Corneria Station, a Commonwealth-controlled dot in the middle of the former PRC, and a bunch of splintered states.

Finally, there's a small slice of Commonwealth territory on the Scutum-Crux arm between the Krytos and the Patriarchy- the Ambrose province, a couple dozen lightly developed worlds and a Commonwealth military base which helps protect the lanes from the Azegart to the Commonwealth proper.

Finally, the Free States Union is no longer independant.

One more statement to make:

Folks, many many players are spending points on improving ground troops. Well and good. Keep in mind-

Just as in STGOD4, there is only so good one can make one's army. Even a hefty spending of points- 50% or greater of your capital ship forces- will only gain you troops twice as good as average.

-edit- Oh, and nice that half my mainstream empire is outside the Waste. Cool :)

How well known is it that Azegart is run by the 3SC? They're right next door, and I'm trying to figure out if the 6CS would contact one or the other :)

It's more or less common knowledge that the Kraus dynasty is a 3SC shill. I mean, we conquered the old government and appointed him Emperor, and took an 8th of his nation as our sovereign territory. IF it makes you feel any better, the old Azegart Empire was REALLY evil.

It should be noted that while it's clear that Emperor Kraus is *very* friendly to the Commonwealth, the degree to which he is controlled is not common knowledge, and while many may assume that he's a total puppet, some also accept the party line that he's building a new Azegart Empire, bereft of the xenophobic lunacy of ages past. It might even be true.

You'd contact the Empire, in any case, unless you wanted to purposefully slap us in the face.

-edit- Oh, and the 3SC is more or less the premier power in the Eastern Rim at this point, with colonies all over the region; you'd certainly contact us as well ;)

On that map, I saw myself has more to the North of Krytos. And if this Great Waste is so fucking barren why can so many powers pop up in it. My OOB alone details 4 different pre-Templar Nations. Can't we shrink that Waste a bit?

The Waste is not empty; indeed, many, many inhabited planets litter that space. However, the area is also full of debris storms AU wide, post-detonation stars, and relics of ancient times.

Doesnt the idea that some powers will have difficulty colonizing while others wont seem just a bit unfair? I see several powers that are outside of this barren waste, and they WILL be able to colonize more easily, and gain territory without the use of force.

No one said says your territory has to be contiguous. In the old age of empires it was usual for colonies to be far removed from the mother country.

On the flip side, relics of a war that involved Culture technology and Imperiumverse technology go a long way towards evening up the whole 'hard to colonize' bit. Sure, I'm smaller, but I just salvaged a gun that can make its target explode into an uncontrolled fission reaction.

1) The Great Waste is a poetic term, as we have said repeatedly.
2) Colonies are not that great an advantage. Maybe you have the idea that colonies are supar-kool awsum, but in real life only "extractive" colonies have any immediate payoff, and everyone can set those up equally well. "Productive" colonies take a tremendous amount of time and effort, and it is only after a matter of years and decades that they even begin to make a return on investment.
