of course, the REAL spartan's started suckin' it up during the Peloponnesian War. did you know they actually SURRENDERED at a battle at the island of Sphaecteria, after being blockaded by the Athenian navy?
they started rockin it again when Aegeslius was King, but then he sucked it up AGAIN by breaking one of Lycurgus' laws; never make war with an enemy for too long, lest they learn Spartan tactics.
and so he got dominated by Thebes.
all this crap really doesn't matter when Phillip II of Macedon starts kicking ass.

well the true Spartans were not clan based culture (they were class based) and were Bi (like all Ancient Greek cultures). I think Fett's armor has Greek influencies in it (like the shape of the helmet), but IMHO the Mandalorian are not the Spartans of SW (for example Mandalorian Women can be warrior as well).unbeataBULL wrote:halo spartan's got NUTHIN' on the troo bloo legendary spartans of the peloponnessus

i was mostly referring to their shared militaristic society, and the fact that they both kicked ass

He had a small band of buddies that saved Leia and Han and slaughtered a bunch of Vong on a space station, but it wasn't enough to save the station. More of a band of Vong-killing mauraders than an army.unbeataBULL wrote:yeah, i didn't want to start another whole topic for this question:
Is it true that Boba Fett has summons some kind of Mandalorian army who fights off the Yuhzahn Vong? heard it on another forum. Note that some guys on that same forum thought maul could take on Tyrannus ( ), so i'm not too sure of its validity.

Theres the SbS turnpoint, where the NR started fighting back, theres Destiny way where the Vong start getting their ass kicked.

i've always wondered how the Vong handled massive-scale conflict. do they have ANY equivalent of a blaster rifle? i could only find thudbug grenades and melee amphistaffs.
i mean, what are their battle tacitcs? is it mostly orbital conflict?

In SbS(I just re-read that so thats what i'm going by), they also have Razor bugs, which basicly rip apart a face.unbeataBULL wrote:i've always wondered how the Vong handled massive-scale conflict. do they have ANY equivalent of a blaster rifle? i could only find thudbug grenades and melee amphistaffs.

And they have Voxyn and enough reptoids to overwhelm blasters.
In one of the early books theres also some ground craft described, but not that many.

The Vong (IIRC) equilent for blasters they use bugs and heavy armor to get into melee range. they Also use bioweapons or drop a moon on the planet if they can't defeat it.unbeataBULL wrote:i've always wondered how the Vong handled massive-scale conflict. do they have ANY equivalent of a blaster rifle? i could only find thudbug grenades and melee amphistaffs.

No, it does nothing but delay the Vong a few minutes so Leia and Han can evacuate a space station.unbeataBULL wrote:still, its a turning point in the conflict, right? the appearance of Boba Fett's ass-kicker's?
It is important in that Leia and Han later on make a critical discovery, so if Boba Fett hadn't shown up they would have died, and they wouldn't have found out about Alpha Red.
This wouldn't have changed the story too much, except that at the end of the Unifying Force they wouldn't have realized that the ship was carrying Alpha Red, therefore they would have still won the battle but Zonama Sekot would have been destroyed and half the Jedi would have died in the process (but the war would still be won).
I believe the Razor bugs would circle around and keep hitting the target over and over, while the Thud bugs just slammed into the target and tore into them.Ace Pace wrote:In SbS(I just re-read that so thats what i'm going by), they also have Razor bugs, which basicly rip apart a face.unbeataBULL wrote:i've always wondered how the Vong handled massive-scale conflict. do they have ANY equivalent of a blaster rifle? i could only find thudbug grenades and melee amphistaffs.

They have multiple battle tactics.unbeataBULL wrote:i've always wondered how the Vong handled massive-scale conflict. do they have ANY equivalent of a blaster rifle? i could only find thudbug grenades and melee amphistaffs.

Firstly, so you know, it was explained that their creatures are genetically engineered to have minature power generators inside each cell that generate enough power that they can resist a lightsaber strike for a few seconds. Therefore, their armor requires a lightsaber to press for several seconds, or several blaster bolts to the same spot (or a lightsaber or blaster shot to a weak spot like the armpits or joints), and their amphistaffs can use an energy field to flatten themselves out thin enough that the points are molecule-thin and can cut through practically anything.
So basicly they don't die in one hit like a Stormtrooper.
Secondly, their razor bugs can home in, and they can throw other bugs with explosives inside that aren't very pretty.
But most importantly, they take every single captive they have and implant control seeds in them. Consider the sheer population of the SW galaxy- even colony worlds have millions on them. So imagine the forces they'd have.
For example, the battle of Dantooine had very few Vong on the ground in the battle. Instead, they had a massive army 2 km wide and 7 km long of mind-controlled slaves that just kept marching and marching straight into the enemy camp, simply too many to shoot, and the Vong flying fighter cover and controlling the ground vehicles (yes, they have plasma-blasting artillery weapons and tank-analogs).
Through corridors the Vong like to run around throwing bugs around corners, then fly around the corners waving the amphistaffs (in that way they're like Klingons, except that they're smart enough to use ranged weapons when they can't reach with the staffs ).

Boba Fett and his Manalorians dont show up in the NJO anytime before TUFandrewgpaul wrote:I know that bit gets mentioned at the end of The Unifying Force, but is the scene in any of the books previous to that, in greater detail?
I'm wondering, if the other guys were proper Mandalorians, or did Fett just get some local talent equipped in some knock-offs of his own armour?
I know the old tales is nothing to go by but i think it was Tales: 19 or 18 which takes place right before TUF where Han is on a junk yard world i think Ord Mantell and hes being chassed by "Fett" and keeps killing him until he realizes theres more than one Fett and the "REAL" Fett comes on over and thanks Han for weeding out the weakist links in his new Mandalorian army and the rest is history
