"Piracy Hits All Time High"
"The month of October has marked the highest number of ship tonnage lost to pirate attacks in the last five years, say officers in the Commonwealth Navy. Sixteen heavy freighters have been lost in the last week alone.
'These losses can be attributed to the unstable nature of most feifdoms and nations in the region. Certainly, we are able to protect the major hubs effectively, as proven by the sharp decrease in losses along the Corneria Station/Tranquility line. The problem crops up when pirates operate with relative impunity from semi-legal feifdoms outside Commonwealth jurisdiction. The lack of co-operation with local powers in the hounding of pirates has severely hampered our efforts.'
Said a spokesman for the Colonial Fleet anti-piracy operations out of Ambrose Station.
Anti-piracy operations have relied on the past on passive defense of the spacelanes, but the vast distance which must be covered make such operations unweildy and increasingly ineffective.
'We need more ships to effectively protect the trade lanes. Either we organize with other local governments to protect the lanes more effectively, or we go after the piracy at it's source. We really have no other choice if this problem is to be solved.'
The Commonwealth Government, the primary source of patrols for the space lanes in the Eastern Rim, has yet to issue a public announcement about it's intentions concerning the growing piracy problem."
"Major Cultist Leader Killed"
"In a sting operation just yesterday, Commonwealth and Azegart Imperial soldiers raided a hideout of the radical Imperial Cult on the planet Astris in the Azegart Empire. After a two-hour running fire-fight, in which seven Commonwealth soldiers were killed, the fugitives were brought to heel. Unfortunately, most were killed in the shooting, including ringleader Lars Lexandros. Lexandros, a preacher in the Cult before the Commonwealth intervention of February, 222, has been linked with a numb er of kidnappings and terrorist attacks. His organization has taken credits for the televised executions of over thirty Imperial officials and literally hundreds of non-humans, who are considered demons by the fanatical cult.
This operation, in which Commonwealth soldiers operated closely with Imperial forces, represents a new stepping-stone in relations between the two powers, and marks the end of the Imperial Cult as an organized force. The Imperial Cult has been a constant thorn in the side of the Kraus dynasty and it's supporters, spreading anti-alien sentiment and striking against Imperial authority. Now, increased co-operation and growing distaste with the retrograde theocrats is leading to a clear chance for stability in the still-stabilizing region.

[KSN Advantage class heavy cruiser Startide, guarding merchant convoy in international space near KSN-TSC border]
The Startide's main fusion cannons lanced outwards at the pirate frigate that was attacking the convoy. they peirced the pirate ships shields and bored deep into the hull, ripping into it's power generator and sparking a minature sun that engulfed the vessel.
"Damage report"
"Missile battery 2 is offline. Shields at 67 percent"
The Startide was currently bearing the brunt of the firepower of two pirate cruisers and five, make that four, pirate frigates that had attempted to ambush the Krytosian convoy. Since everyone else hated the empire, no on wanted to guard their merchant ships, so a valuable heavy cruiser had been dispatched to escort the convoy
"Target the lead cruiser with all foreward guns"
the Startide's foreward batteries lanced out, and obliterated the lead pirate cruiser, turning it into wreckage
"Report on the convoy"
"The last of them just got away, looks like the pirates are turning to run"
the ship shuddered as another barrage from the ragtag pirate fleet impacted the shields
"Target the nearest ship. Let's take as many of them out as possible"
the Startide's foreward batteries lanced out again, hitting two of the frigates that had ventured too close to the warships guns. one was obliterated instantly, the other suffered heavy damage, and it's reactor shielding ruptured.
"The rest of the pirate fleet has jumped to hyperspace sir"
"Damn. I wanted to try and finish them off. What about the frigate?"
"Looks like it suffered heavy damage in the fight. it's reactor core is leaking radiation all over the place. Holy crap! Sir, it just made a jump"
"Where's it going?"
"Into Commonwealth territory."
"Then we'd better not follow. Send a Message to Commonwealth border command, tell them a heavily damaged pirate warship just jumped into their space, and it's bleeding rads all over the damn place."
"What about the convoy?"
"One of the five ships was destroyed by the pirates, the others got away"
"Damn"
The captain of the Startide sighed.
"That convoy was badly needed. I should have done a better job"
The KSN was stretched thinly throughout the Empire, and pirate attacks were getting worse every day...

Sous-Admiral Jessica de Neuville was in the middle of brushing her teeth when her com-implant began chiming. She spat, sighed, and answered.
"What is it?"
"Madame Sous-Admiral, we have just recieved a transmission from a Krytosian heavy cruiser. They are reporting a pirate attack, and have informed us that they sent at least one bogey packing in the general direction of Ambrose."
"Any specifics?"
"Yes, Madame Sous-Admiral. A lone frigate, badly damaged and leaking radiation."
de Neuville winced slightly as her implant recieved the data. She examined the location, projected path, and list of nearby Commonwealth units. A pair of destroyers and their escorts were in the region- the 2nd Destroyer Sororas, a sub-unit under her squadron's jurisdiction.
"Have the Kirov and the De Gualle move to intercept, then. A full Sororas should be more than enough."
"Yes, Madame Sous Admiral."
Jessica smiled sardonically. The shift wasn't even started, and they'd had their first catch. Commodore Sykes would have no problem dealing with the annoyance.

Outer Pinnacle system, NRS Pillar of Autumn
The exercises were going well. The crews of Fifth Fleet had drilled incessantly over the past two weeks, and were as polished as they'd ever been as the maneuvers drew to a close. Admiral Davis observed passively from his command chair on the Autumn's bridge as the target, an old hulk of a scrapped bulk freighter, lined up within the SMAC's firing arc. The gigantic battleship shuddered as the massive spinal railgun propelled a shell towards the freighter at a considerable fraction of the speed of light. In such a short span of time that human senses could not discern an interval between the two events, the multiton shell ripped straight through the hulk and out the other side, rendering the former freighter unrecognizable as anything other than several chunks of rapidly gyrating scrap metal. Captain Reid nodded in satisfaction as he looked over the shoulder of a sensor operator. The hit had taken the target directly in its center of mass.
"Helm, lay in a course for Pinnacle. That's it for today. Good work out there, people."
"Aye, sir," responded the helmsman. The battleship's attendant cruisers and destroyers formed up around her as the task group headed back to port.

"Hrm. The Krytos are back... and they want terraforming equipment again." The man looked up. "Ah well, war means good business... Send them our current catalog and some contact information if they want some customized equipment."
Shortly afterward, digital copies of the Industrial AgroTech inc. catalog arrived in various Krytos inboxes.
[OOC: See the OOB thread for a quick description of what Industrial AgroTech offers. I'll make a real catalog sometime.]

She took another sip from her Caipirinha and adjusted her position on the divan. Through her shades she could see across a vast purple ocean and the warm sun basked them all in warmth.
Of course, all this happened just in Datasphere, but to everyone present, it was just as real as 'reality'. A concept of diminishing meaning for Avalonese people.
"Can you wrap it up for me, Pitr?" she asked her chief-of-staff.
"Of course, CEO," he answered. "Our colonies are coming along quite nicely. The human onesless so than the Isha'Qal one. The human populace still is not as fully embracing Stuartian values. The insectoids on the other hand are just fitting in perfect. Their own portion of Datasphere has just gone online and we're finally finished with most genetic and cybernetic upgrades, so we're increasing their life span to match that of our own. Regrow facilities are also prepared to handle Isha'Qal now. The orbital facilities and new floating cities in the new systems are working miraculously well. It couldn't have gone better."
"Good to hear, Pitr," she nodded from her position. "What about the foreign affairs?"
"Ah yes, CEO," Erad Nelhoun's mind-copy answered. "We're about to send an envoy to the Sabai. We hope to get as good relations with them as we had with the Indashani. Krytos Empire has asked for foreign nations to open up embassies there. A thing we should consider. And then there is this Roma republic, that is quite new, near us. An envoy would be quite revealing. We don't know much about them."
"Very well," she nodded again. "Do it." She looked over to the avatar of Datasphere. "And your opinion?" In a way, it was funny to ask it, as she herself was part of the huge Datasphere mind, encompassing each and every Stuartian.
"We concur," it just said. "We should proceed along these lines."

Two specially designed courier ships undocked from their holding places along the axis of Orbital Two and moved away from it to the next transit zone.
Once there, they simply vanished with the telltale suddenness of Kornienko drive.
One set course for Sabai space, the other approaching Krytos space.

61st Fleet Auxlia Manipul, Nurnen system
The vox-link on Captain Sorbeus's desk beeped. Putting down his writing pad, he answered.
"Real-space conversion complete, Brother-Captain. We are entering orbit of Nurnen X now. Your presence is requested at the pod bays."
Sorbeus stretched his augmetic limbs, and gave an affirmative. He suited up in his power armor, and made his way down to the pod bays.
A dozen Space Marines stood on the deck, field striping their weapons and double-checking their personal sets of armor. They came to stiff attention as Sorbeus strode in. "At ease, Brothers. We drop in 10 minutes. Our target is the city the Nurnen natives call-" he glanced down at his wrist-comm-"Xagalik. Our mission is to secure a landing zone for the Eccelsiarchs and forward-colonists. If we meet resistance, ignore it. We are not here to start a war. Understood?" His brothers slammed their armored fists into their chest with a resounding clang. "The Emperor's will be done!"
At the appointed time, the Space Marines loaded into their squat-drop pods, hanging out over the speckled Nurnen surface in pre-launch mode. Once everyone was secure, the pods were fired , two at a time. Atmospheric entry went as smoothly as possible, and the pods touched down right on target.
As the sealed hatches on the sides of the pods split open, milling Nurnians froze in place, gelatinous bodies quivering in fear as the Astartes stomped down the deployment ramps, bolters at the ready. Sorbeus emerged after the rest of the pods were emptied, and spoke into his helment translator. He couldn't hear his translated speech; Nurnians spoke in such high-frequencies even his augmented ears could barely detect it. They cowered as he informed them what else was coming, but a hardy few slinked forward, chirping in their peculiar tongue. His translator listened for a scant moment, then relayed their queries to Sorbeus. The masters of the sky have come once more? When Sorbeus answered affirmatively, the Nurnians nearby broke into undulating chanting, which his translator informed was of a 'joyous nature.'
Sorbeus had almost forgotten; the Imperium once had control of Nurnian at some point in the distant past. But what had driven Mankind away was purged from his records. Odd...
A heretical thought. Put it aside. I will chastise myself later.

Council Chambers, Castle of the Protector, Vigora IV
The four living members of the ex-Protectors conference, along with twelve influential House of Lords and House of Commons members (including the Prime Minister), seated themselves around the long conference table set in the center of the room. They hadn't long to wait in the dimly lit room when the Lady Protector made her appearance. "All rise!" commanded a member of House of Lords.
As the members around the table began to rise in honor of their sovereign, the young Lady Protector snapped "We can skip the formalities today." She glanced around the room quickly, as if looking for someone. Upon taking her seat at the head of the conference table, the others sat. She scowled, "Do I need to remind you all what this meeting is about?"
A member of the ex-Protector's conference, the elder Aka Manah, cleared his throat, "No, need I remind of you of our concerns?"
The Lady Protector played with a ring on her right hand, "No. The decision is made, I want a discussion of methods."
A member of the House of Commons delegation, someone who the Lady Protector recognized as a former UVP cruiser Captain stood up, "Remote probes, our ships are too few in number to disperse outside of our territory for long."
"And what would the probes contain?" asked a member of the House of Lords, "A message of peace, coordinates to our worlds, anything, nothing? We have a first contact policy which states that..."
"None of us need a reminder of UVP first contact policy," began another member of the House of Lords delegation, "except you. That policy is geared towards sudden unexpected contacts. The decision has been made to seek out those outside our borders."
"It would be a good start..."
The Lady Protector interrupted, "Not when taking into account the most recent batch of communication intercepts. I want the fleets at home in case we have an outbreak of organized piracy."
Ex-Protector Aka Manah turned to the reigning Lady Protector, "You were briefed earlier?" She nodded her assent. Aka turned back towards to conference, "Remote probes? Other suggestions?"
"With all due respect..."
"What part of 'I want the fleets at home' do you not understand?"
"Not that, m'lady," the House of Lords member cleared his throat, "Rather than dispatch droids, why not a simple message from a hardened military outpost? We do have the technology."
There were some rumblings among the conference members. "What station would you suggest?" someone asked, the Lady Protector couldn't tell who.
"Karttikeya Station," the gentleman continued, "They're relatively isolated, and the only station with little activity at the moment, so most of Jizo group is at port."
"Do we have response time estimates for that station?" the voice was female, and once again the Lady Protector didn't recognize it.
"Shi Tenno would respond, their best time is twenty-six minutes for fleet commitment." the former cruiser captain answered.
"Why not Indra station? It is equally isolated." same female as before. The Lady Protector rolled her eyes.
"Indra Station is pointed toward the galactic rim, while Karttikeya Station is pointed somewhat core-ward." The speaker was a member of the House of Commons.
The Lady Protector added, "Let us not forget that any ship from the core would have to go through Vigora itself to get to Indra. Karttikeya Station, it is."
The discussion continued for another hour, each member of the conference adding their own thoughts on what the UVP's first outbound transmission should include. Ultimately, the Prime Minister took responsibility upon himself and the Lady Protector assented. She, along with the ex-Protectors, departed the chambers to allow them to finish their work.

The young lady who entered the room was stunningly beautiful. She had deep purple eyes and black hair tinged slightly violet. In fact, much of her attire too had a purple design to it; from her pleated miniskirt to her boots and the highlights of her gloves and collar. She most definately appeared in top shape and the way she walked was designed to turn heads. And while short, her legs seemed to go on, well, forever. Yes, she was a stunning person.
Of course, after the first glance at this enchanting young lady most turned away in total fear, no matter how attractive she might be. Today she was in the Corsair Republic on a personal errand and at one of the top restaurants of the pirate kingdom. Like most, they served take-out for the ever-busy lifestyle of the persons who lived there. Fine takeout in the most well-crafted stasis boxes, but take-out nevertheless. The waiter assigned to her, to his credit, barely sweated and efficiently managed to process her order and get her food in under five minutes. Smiling, the feared woman touched each container, which disappeared.
She paid for her order in a mix of Star Kingdom and Terran credits and then walked out in that attention-getting way, silently noting how many she could distract -- and how many she could terrify. A combination of perfect recall and intense instruction let her keep a lifetime tally of how people acted where and when. Very useful for someone in that field.
Leaving onto the streets (where people gave her a very wide berth), she teleported into a vessel. While this was not the hardest accomplishment in the world (teleportation devices being fairly widespread) she happened to teleport onto a vessel transiting the Grid. And that was a much more difficult achievement. One of the occupants was unnerved but said nothing; the other simply smiled as if he knew she was coming. He'd become good at detecting her, somehow. She'd pay much to know how, especially as that person was known to be totally incapable of using magic.
"Lord Andrews. Uncle Phong. Care to join me for dinner, relaxation and perhaps a chat?" She smiled at that. Everyone -- including the ship's Mind -- knew it wasn't really a mere request. When Sailor Saturn asked you for dinner, you simply didn't say no.
