Shatner and ST V DVD:SE?

This would be great! I realize the ST5 had a lot of problems, but it had some good things as well. I thought Shatner's directing was excellent; the introduction of Sybok on the horse was very well done.
I read a lot of things about this production which doomed it from the start. For instance Shatner had a scene where the canyon walls on "God's planet" would come alive and try to kill Kirk. The scene reads EXACTLY like the "Galaxy Quest" rock monster scene.
If Shatner can do an SE on this in the same scope that was done on ST:TMP, I'll definitely buy this DVD.

It would certainly be worth taking a look at.

On retrospect
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was a better movie than a lot of people were willing to credit. We all know it had problems. Some scenes could have used editing and some more script work was needed. But the writers' strike that year made that impossible.
But on balance, TFF was a fairly decent movie. It's plot hangs together quite well, Lawrence Luckinbill makes a very charismatic antagonist, and the movie has some good ideas at its core. And considering the paucity of ideas in BragaTrek™, that alone is worth giving this movie a reassesment.
And despite how bad the SFX were (a result of Paramount using a scab FX outfit when ILM refused to cross the picket line), the image of the Enterprise boldly plunging into the maelstrom of the Great Barrier —challenging the Unknown— is one of Trek's most evocative images. Said everything about what Star Trek is truly supposed to be about.

One interesting note, Kirk get's a lot more cyniccal in this movie then in others, maybe because he was co-writer, for example, the scene where he, McCoy and Spock are in the brig, when they, after that relaxing moment Earthside, get back on ship, the whole Planet of Galactic Peace rescue... He behaves in a more natural, humane way, than in other movies.
It deserves a lot more credit for it.
(Besides, we were better prepared for ST:VI, weren't we?)
Another thought... The "God" in the center of the galaxy is a lot like the blibical God... It inflicts pain on those that doubt him!

And don't forget the super-hyper-fast mega warp drive that took the Enterprise to the center of the galaxy in a period of time comparable to what a Star Wars ship could've done.Warspite wrote:One interesting note, Kirk get's a lot more cyniccal in this movie then in others, maybe because he was co-writer, for example, the scene where he, McCoy and Spock are in the brig, when they, after that relaxing moment Earthside, get back on ship, the whole Planet of Galactic Peace rescue... That can be explained by technobabble!!!!!!!!!!! If I recall, on Graham Kennedy's site, he introduces the concept of "Warp Highways", were it's possible to reach "ludicrous speed", but they are temporary phenomema, so that's why it only worked once.
COntrary to everything else on his site, this actually makes a "little" bit sense, Sybok spent years trying to reach the Great Barrier, he was extremely intelligent, so it was possible that he could know about these, um, highways...
But, anyway, the movie goes into the alternate reality explanation and we're done with it.

Absoloutely not, I like the ludicrous speed of the Ent-A. I have something to ram down the necks of B&B fans. Oh and the Excelsiors transwarp drive.

I wont buy it. The only TOS movie I might buy on DVD is The Undiscovered Country.

Well, supposedly, one of the bridge consoles at the very end of Star Trek 4 says "Transwarp Control" or something, so maybe...GrandMasterTerwynn wrote:And don't forget the super-hyper-fast mega warp drive that took the Enterprise to the center of the galaxy in a period of time comparable to what a Star Wars ship could've done.Warspite wrote:One interesting note, Kirk get's a lot more cyniccal in this movie then in others, maybe because he was co-writer, for example, the scene where he, McCoy and Spock are in the brig, when they, after that relaxing moment Earthside, get back on ship, the whole Planet of Galactic Peace rescue... Actually should we compare any of the TOS movies to B&B trek.
I mean Kirk's whole "what does God need with a Starship?" was truly cool...and just so dead on perfect.
Heck I loved his "I need my pain!"
Honestly for something that is considered the worst of the TOS movies...this one is heads houlders above B&B trek anyday...though Uhura dancing was *shudder*

While I'm not a BIG fan of ST5, it does have its good points...in a sea of bad ones. However, I still get a kick out of Spock scaring the shit out of Kirk on that rockface.

I say it's like for me it may be the inherent feel of certain things...the Klingon yungins was good but at points, there was too much touchy feely.

Sorry, thats just something that I didn't want to see. X-P
- Pussification of Spock.
In the TOS eps, whenever Kirk was in trouble Spock did anything to help him out. Like Spock couldn't have hit Sybok upside his head with the butt of that "rifle" or atleast shot him in the leg to disable him.
- Romance between Scotty and Uhura.
I don't want to sound like a bigot, but I didn't care for that at all. Not because of their skin color difference, but because it didn't make any sense at all. That'd be the last thing I'd expect from those two.
- The "Let me take your pain!" scenes.
Those were just aweful. Granted, they were for emotional appeal to the characters, but they didn't really add to the movie.
I could list more, but those were my main beefs with the movie.
However, there are several things that I did like....like Scotty's "I know this ship like the back of my hand!" scene, and his bitching log entry in the beginning. "Lets see what she's got the captain said...and we found out now didn't we?"

Damn I'm surprised that some people actually enjoyed ST:V as I did. Of course it had it faults that I despised but I think it is very enjoyable to watch still. Especially more so in comparison to some TNG B&B movies (Insurrection). I thought the score for TFF was alomost better than TMP to a degree.
