Virginia is for Haters...(new license plates)

Post by Frank Hipper »

So, on top of already having a law denying same sex couples civil unions, domestic partnerships, or marriage, Virginia lawmakers are preparing a state constitutional ammendment to protect the Godly institution of Holy Matrimony...

...Oh, and they're proposing license plates to celebrate denying others the privileges of marriage, too.
But, the legislature will also look at a measure that would put the marriage issue on license plates. The bill calls for traditional marriage to be displayed on car licenses. If passed the plates would interlocked gold wedding bands superimposed over a red heart over the legend "Traditional Marriage."

Can we make license plates saying "Fuck you Virginia"?

So not only do they want to outlaw gay marriage, but they want to rub their noses in it at every possible opportunity?

Makes me feel like hitting something.

I'm surprised one of the predictable Southern apologists hasn't crawled out of the woodwork yet.

Sure, it's an asshatted move. but a lot of stupid proposals get made every year in almost every state's legislature.
A while back some idiot in our legislature wanted to put Michael Jackson* on our license plates.

If it draws substantial support, then we can slag Virginia.
Until then though, I'm inclined not to take it too seriously.

You know that this is just the coup de grace on top of an amendment (expected to pass) which forbids the recognition of any form of gay union or extension of applicable rights and privileges thereof, right?

Actually, no. I didn't make the mental connection.
That's what I get for drinking at 2AM after work.

Let me rephrase:
Taken by itself, the proposed plates are an asshatted proposal that I wouldn't take too seriously unless it drew a lot of support.

When taken in concert with the proposed amendment and its prospects however, I'd say you have to take it more seriously than if the proposal were made independently of the current debate in Virginia.

Remember kids, this is *just* an ammendment to Virginia's state constitution we're talking about, as of April 21st, 2004 legal contracts OF ANY KIND between same sex couples are illegal in Virginia.
A civil union, partnership contract or other arrangement between persons of the same sex purporting to bestow the privileges or obligations of marriage is prohibited. Any such civil union, partnership contract or other arrangement entered into by persons of the same sex in another state or jurisdiction shall be void in all respects in Virginia and any contractual rights created thereby shall be void and unenforceable.

Does anyone wonder why Maryland seized the entire Potomac? Because we want to have the biggest possible barrier between ourselves and this crap. I love going to the south to visit my family but the politics down there scare me real bad.

I long for the day Virginia become ridiculed in history texts for its repression and discrimination of GLBT people along with the rest of the South.
