Best bands...

Post by Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi »

Of all the bands today (and of the past), who of which band do you think is the best vocalist? Best guitarist? Best drummer? Best on keyboards? Best at something else?

Best vocalist would be Freddy Mercury of Queen. Don't know about most of the others.

I dunno if you can consider it a band, but Dido...if not, then Gwen Stefani (for female).

For male, well, whoever it is from Green Day.

Best guitar- Jimi Hendrix
Quite possibly. I don't play guitar, so it's hard for me to tell what's technically hard and what's just smoke and mirrors.
best on piano/keyboard- Billy Joel
Either Billy Joel or Elton John, it's hard to tell who's actually the better player.

I can, and he's got a good voice. Good range and all that.

I'm not too much either. But he's good, the only guy still playing that comes close is Carlos Santana.

I know. Billy Joel is a sentimental favorite. I grew up listening to his music.

If either of you play piano, have you ever tried "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," "Summer, Highland Falls," or "Prelude (to 'Angry Young Man')"? Even as a piano major, I found those hard to play correctly (as in, sounding like Billy). Light-years beyond Elton, in my opinion.

Plus, I heard them do a piano battle when they toured together the first time around, and Billy just plowed right over Elton. Plus he could still hit all those high falsetto notes that Elton can't anymore... Joel is awesome. :D

I'm a mallet player, so I understand piano (though I don't play well, my fingers don't have good independent coordination). "Scenes" is definitely one of the hardest pieces, since there are three distinct styles (to my ears).

New category: Best brass player
Nominee: Chuck Mangione

New category: Best classical music performance
Nominee: Trans-Siberian Orchestra for "Flight of the Bumblebee" from Beethoven's Last Night

Question on the Trans-Sibverian Orchestra: What did you think of their rendition of the Carol of the Bells?

Cool! Mallets are my speciality, but I started on piano.

It's on the playlist of music I use to help me sleep at night. Then again, it runs the gamut from TSO to Run DMC to Papa Roach to Santana to Gordon Lightfoot, so my musical tastes pretty much run the gamut.

*shudder* Santana....ick. But I would be ore along the lines of TSO, Dido, Linkin Park, Cranberries, Beatles, System of a Down, Godsmack, more classical, Fleetwood Mac, and a few others.

Santana's pretty good, there's no arguing with that, but there's others out there now that can match what Hendrix does. Joe Satriani comes to mind, and his student Steve Vai is pretty damn good too. Take a listen to Satriani's "Satch Boogie", "Ceremony", "Ice 9" and "Crystal Planet". Hendrix I think still wins out on improvising live, but Satriani can play more styles other than Blues based jams which most Hendrix tunes are based on.

I was at a Tori Amos concert last year and she did a couple Elton songs, her versions just killed Elton's, her piano and live improv skills are quite impressive. Her songs are pretty tough too I think, a couple good piano players I know can either play the songs or sing them, but they can't do both at the same time without losing time and mangling things.

My List

Vocalist - Freddy Mercury
Guitarist - Hendrix or Joe Satriani
Drummer - Dave Grohl on a small kit or Dave Lombardo (Slayer) on a big kit
Keyboards - Tori Amos or Chantal Kreviazuk, Tori has the edge I think

The Beatles
Led Zepplin

Both I like to varrying degrees but more importantly I think they both contributed greatly to the development of popular music. The Beatles and to a lesser extent Led Zepplin tried a lot of inovations that we take for granted today.

The Who -- Mainly for such their extremely good and inovative album The Who's Next Album

Rush -- Have three people ever put out music on the scale that they do? I can't say that all that much of their music is to my tastes but I can still appreciate how good they are. They also have a huge catalog of records that they've released.

Black Sabbath -- Mainly because I like them and because they are the basis for all the "evil" heavy metal bands in one way or another. :)

Something wicked this way comes.
