What is it with Georgia, anyway?

As if the sniper-setting Sheriff story wasn't enough, this morning I hear about the Augusta dentist who was recently indicted for killing his girlfriend Dolly Hearn in 1990, and is under investigation in the death of his wife after discovering that she was carrying on a lengthy online correspondence with someone named 'Hearn' .... both women died by being shot in the head, and police initially viewed both deaths as suicides.

I saw the wife's father and best friend interviewed on tv this morning ... they're convinced it was just some bizarre coincidence that the wife was having an online relationship with somebody using the same name as the husband's ex-girlfriend.

The South is just indescribably odd sometimes.

Georgia's problems are complex, but if you have to boil it down to a single root cause, it must be all of the Georgians who live there.

Living here in Atlanta after moving from Los Angeles (15 years in LA) I can testify that it's a very odd place.

I think it boils down to our fav subject, religion and its racist past.

I'll give you a great example of one of the oddities: I'm a gay man in a inter-racial relationship. And there is an extremely large black population in Atlanta and the entire state of GA.

The entire Gay Marriage issue was at the forefront of national politics last year. Baffling to me throughout the debate on this issue was the Southern Black Clergy people came out strongly against legalization of gay marriage. This blew my mind -- how could people who:

Have themselves been the victim of racisim and in the more distant past, subjected to enslavement -- be in favor of denying people civil rights.

I spoke dispassionatly and passionatly with several straight black men and women about this issue and it boils down to: a)strong religious convcitions and a willingness to blindly follow the bible despite it's own racisim b) an inherent belief in small-town values of bigotry c) the belief that bigotry doesn't apply to homosexuality.

I'm simply using this as an example of the crazy values some have here in GA. Albiet Atlanta being a city of 3 million is a little bit more liberal, but drive 15 minutes outside of the city and one would think they're living with people who still exist in 1950 and their values.
