I'm not saying that this is necessarily the case here, but I see a lot of people sitting on a bandwagon without knowing that much about the situation.
Let's say that it did fit your scenario. Does that make it right to fire those people?
If they had something to do with it, then sure fire them. However, I know I'd be pissed if I got hired because of a racist sheriff then fired because of someone trying to make things equal. There should be a lot of factors that go into such a decision.

More likely than not he merely wanted to humiliate the fired employees and perhaps provoke them into doing something stupid.
He's an idiot for the simple reason that if you are worried about termed employees coming back and doing no good, you don't go out of your way to humiliate them on their way out the door.
As it is, if he were to get blown away tomorrow I wouldn't be too surprised and I wouldn't have very much sympathy either.

Forgot to add that using prisoner transport vans to take them home was needlessly rubbing it in their faces.

I remember that. It was in the news for a long time. A new sheriff was elected (in Dekalb County IIRC, which is in Atlanta) to fix the corruption of the old sheriff's reign, and then the old sheriff had him assassinated. Here's the kicker: while the new sheriff was black, so was the old one. It wasn't racially motivated in the least.
