Cannon and HP

Post by Crown »

I realised that the title could have been less ambiguious but hey.

Okay here is my thought; What is the cannon order for Harry Potter?

The movies or the novels?

It's just in the second movie (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), we see wizards (Lucius Malfoy) being able to manipulate magic with out the use of their wands. Mostly telekenisis from what I have seen. Now this is never shown to happen in the novels, so what does this mean?

Questions, Comments.

I'd imagine that the books overide the movies. The movie are only interpretations of the creator's works and hence less reliable sources.

Yeah I thought too, but does that mean that the screenplays of Star Wars (especially Ep V and VI) overide the movies? I know it's a bit (okay a lot) of a stretch, but still....

And yay! A reply!

books = law. Books are always going to take precedence over the movies, because they came first.

err.....sorry......*points at title.....* get the picture now? In any case, WB does NOT own JK Rowling.,...if she wished, she could easily stop writing, but she is out there to please her fans.

Yes, she's got the original rights. And what Mike has refered to as moral rights. So she would be the ultimate arbiter of what's true in the Harry Potter world.

You know...when Harry Potter(books)first came out. I thought they were kiddie stuff.. never bothered to read it. Then last year I recieved Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. I read it thinking that its the polite thing to do, and surprise surprise...I couldn't put the thing down. Many people may think its a child's series, but I am a convert. I love it and I own the whole series and I can't wait for the next book to come out.

Not bad for a single unemployed Mother who came up with the story while rideing a train and no prior writing experences eh?

Man the fourth book is NO CHILDRENS BOOK! I was telling my nephews that I wouldn't read it to them because it was too scary; they kicked me in the balls, and I changed my mind.

No I agree they are very entertaining novels, now if only she would finish the 5th one already!

Can't wait for Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix! Unless ofcoarse some publishing prat changes the title 'because American kids don't know what a Phoenix is!' Like they did with the Philosoppher's Stone. Rather than educating the dumb fuck's they comprimise the work of an author!

Sorry just ranted for no reason!

What? are you for real? They changed to name of the First book? To what? That's just plain wrong. I'm(sad but true) a product of the American Education System(please do not hold it against me...it was a Random Act of the Universe(TM) that caused me to be born in America)
and I knew what a Philosoppher's Stone was back when I was a child. Of course I was big on Fantasy stuff too.

In America, it is known as the Sorceror's Stone. As far as I know even for the movie, they had to film to seperate scenes any time one of the characters mentioned the stone. One as Philosopher and one as Sorceror. Tragic eh?

Yup. I think it is sad that we've got one of the most ignorant cultures ever.

Well that's the thing; so far all the American's I have talked to *know* what a Philosopher (and his stone) are. So it's not that you are actually ignorant, it's that the publishing firms tend to think that you are. It's just madening!

Just ANOTHER sign of our failing education system.

I always wondered about espcilly considering the number of kids shows that feature the Philosopher stone, I went to the best authority on the subject my nephews 12, 14 who kindly informed me(After demanding Candy, hey it was Hallowean 2001 at the time(When I recived the set from a Aunt) that so far around half of the shows have featured it

Shows they named
Scoobe-doo
Gargoles
Buffy(They are biog fans of her)
Recently, Spongebob Squarepants

So if my 12 and 14 year old Nephews could think off the top of thier head of four shows featuring the Philosopers stone.... well one could always call the publisher dumb  or claim poor memory on the part of the public

And acutal to the question of how Dark the books are from the Words of Miss Rowling stated she was writing the books as slowly as she did so that she COULD get progressivly darker, in her words she wanted the books to grow up with the children

My sentiments exactly when I saw the title

To wander at least marginally on-topic, has one of my fellow krauts
(or someone who is by some other reason than mere geography
inclined to buy books in Germany) been able to pre-order the
english incarnation of Harry Potter V at amazon.de? There's
a pre-order link for the german one on their bloody main
site, but the 'English books' section appears adamant that there's only
four in their various incarnations.
Due to shipping charges, I'd rather not order at amazon.co.uk (heaven
forbid amazon.com), and due to being a terminally addicted fanboy, I
refuse to wait until they actually list the title if I can get away with it.

Thanx for reading this to those who actually read this

AOL-Time Warner own the copyright and trademarks to Harry Potter but only JK Rowling is allowed to write new Harry Potter stories, she also has the moral right to be identified as the author of all the existing and future Harry Potter stories she wrote, and the creator of the charaters and world.

This is probably a tactical descision, as it means that when people like that daft Stouffer woman pop out of the woodwork the legal cost of fighting them is AOL-Time Warner's not JK Rowling's. It also means that such people are at the mercy of Jackbooted Corporate Lawyers™

Or, you know, maybe they changed it to 'Sorceror' because in American literature, Philosophers do not have magical powers.

Kinda like changing 'colour' to color'
