Christians To BBC: You're Oppressing Us!

Post by Admiral Valdemar »

Oh no! Demonstrations have been taking place outside the BBC Television Centre because they chose to show the Jerry Springer: The Musical show this weekend.

Apparently it's "blasphemy".

BBC News

Sure, they have the right to complain, just as I have a right to tell them to get a life. They certainly didn't seem this loud when it was playing (and still is) at the West End.

Bitch, bitch, bitch.

If only that theatre in Birmingham (or was it Bristol?) hadn't cancelled that play due to mob power i doubt we'd be having as big a protests.

If they don'tt like it then they shouldn't watch it, there's plenty of other BBC channels to watch and see where their TV liscence money is going.
In fact the TV liscence is the only thorny thing about this, as since they've payed for it, they have a right to a quality product.

Now i'm going to watch Derran Brown's Messiah, which i bet will get more complaints than his Russian Roulette or his Seance.

Only Christians have the audacity to claim that you are oppressing them when you keep them from oppressing others.

Interesting note on british law, libel covers sedition, which includes statments contrary to both the interests of the government and the church.

Other than that, what a bunch of idiots.

Go BBC!! Every television comes with a magic filtering button that blocks all bad things from TV. It's called an on/off switch people should learn to use it.

Interestingly, it hasn't happened with just Christian groups. As 2000AD mentioned, there was a play in Birmingham done by a Sikh about the religion as a satirical look on it, rather. There were mass demonstrations to the point of property damage and violence and death threats.

And, I too, am watching Derren Brown's Messiah. Expect more record breaking complaint statistics tomorrow as the gullible phone in to protest against the fact that they've been played for mugs by believing in psychics, speakers to the dead and Jesus.

I had the privilege of seeing Monty Python's Life of Brian during its original release in Britain, and walking past Christian picketers ....

That's because people got over their shock, and the old people who were most offended just kept getting older until they died off. When Life of Brian first came out, it did generate controversy.

I've heard from several creationists and right-wing morons alike that the bbc is a liberal news media™ outlet anyway, what with their unwaivering faith in evolution and being against the war on Iraq.

They've often been in trouble with the christians anyway, Mary Whitehouse had her fair share of "FILTH!" screaming sessions aimed at the BBC, but now she's probably spinning fast enough in her grave to power the nation for a night.

The problem with conservatives is that any news outlet which says anything they don't want to hear is immediately labelled "liberal media outlet" and anything they say from that day forward is marginalized in their eyes. It doesn't matter whether it's true; what matters is whether it's "liberal".

Well you have to think about it whis way. Fundie christians dont actually follow the teachings of Jesus, IE, they dont love their naighbor, and they dont remove the log in their own eye before commending on the sliver in someone else's.

I heard that there are at least 15000 complaints recieved prior to showing on breakfast news yesterday morning, they had some bishop or other and someone from BBC2 scheduling in there - think the scheduler took the wrong tack by saying that britain isnt really a christian country any more, but I think he came out best.

It's not as if it's being broadcasted without warning either, there's a documentary on prior to it and the bbc2 rep was saying that they were making it absolutely clear of the show's graphic content.

As a sidenote, i'd be interested to see these christian statistics for britain - my parents say they believe in god, but the only reason they go near a church is to look at the architecture.

According to the office of national statistics (from 2001 census) 71.8% of the population is Christian, 2.8% Muslim, 1% Hindu, o.6% Sikh, 0.5% Jewish, 15.1% have no religion and 7.8% didn't answer the question.
