National Primary day

Post by EmperorSolo51 »

There has been alot of internal wrangling in the DNC over the fact that the primaries do nothing but front-load the presidential system by determining the nominee after Iowa and NH. There have been several DNC Chair nominees who would like to see the sequence of primaries go ad be replaced by a national primary day. This would be akin to the leadership races in Canada, Great Britain, and Australia where the party members vote for thier leader on the same day with the winner being declared at the end of the day.

The question is should we change the system of our national primaries in favor of something else. Being a New Hampshirite, I would love to see the system just go. I would rather have a national Primary day which is fixed after a number of months of campaigning.

I can see no logical reason why the primaries should be spread out. So I, of course, support them being held nationally at the same time.

I just want to see if a politician head will explode when he realizes he has to kiss up to all 50 states at once...

oh there is a logical reason, the year long employment of thousands of Republican and Democratic party strategists, activists, lawyers, campaign managers, advisors etc... etc... To foce all of the primaries to be held on one day would mean less money would be needed and that would NOT sit well with the political establishment on both sides of the aisle.

I would like it. I happen to be a registered Democrat (though with FL's system, I may easily switch affiliations depending on which primary I might want to vote for, if at all possible), so I wouldn't have minded getting in on the primaries whent hey came by here. There was just one problem.

By the time it got to Florida, it was already effectively decided.

Almost every other contender had decided to concede, and though they were still on the ballot, there was no real purpose to voting as it was done.

I wouldn't mind being able to vote for a candidate in the primaries where it might actually count for something, so I'd go for a national primary day in a hearfbeat.

Since I'd like my primary vote to count for something (New Jersey's primary is held in June, long after the presidential nominees are determined), I'm in favor of a national primary day, preferably relatively late, like April or May, in order to shorten the campaign season.

As grueling as the last campaign was for all of us, doesn't shortening the regular election season and allowing for a lengthy primary fight strengthen incumbents unnecessarily?

I'd be in favour of a national primary election day.

Perhaps, but it'll also take away the outsize influence that the asshats in New Hampshire and Iowa have over national policy. Why do you think every candidate genuflects at the altar of 'gasohol'?

It certainly isn't because its the answer to the energy crisis. :D

Agreed. I voted for national primary day too. I was just specifically questioning Red's desire for a shortened campaign season. I prefer to have as few impediments to throwing the bastards out as possible. We already have a ridiculous level of incumbency protection for members of congress, and I'd rather not have it extend to the presidency.
