Writing music

Post by haas mark »

Do you ever write music? If so, what kind of music would you classify it as? I consider mine to be somewhat contemporary-classical, if you get what I mean.

The music(if it could be called music) I attempt to write is Chaotic and random...I have no idea how to classify it. It seem to me to be more of a poetry then music, random lashings of hurt and hate.

Yes, I write music. It's more like sonatas and tone poems, though. I'd love to write a full symphony, but I don't think I have the ability.

Its like... thats a good question... alternative, neo-classical, rockabilly, tone poetic, 80's metal... I delve into many different genres

Sometimes, I just play random notes on the piano and see if I can make anything that sounds good.

I've composed a few songs. No, no lyrics. I don't have the patience or the singing talent to do lyrics. But actual music, yes. I've done a number of genres. I'd like to compose something like a John Williams soundtrack, but I lack the inclination, the time, and a sufficient number of hapless sucker . . . I mean willing mucisians to perform my work.

I arrange more than I write, but here goes... I've written some Tori Amos-esque piano & voice songs, and I've written a couple folk songs on guitar (pretty bad ones, though, because I can barely play the guitar). Mostly I write arrangements for symphonic band, percussion ensemble, marching band and brass ensemble. I composed a string quartet piece, and have written three percussion ensemble pieces of my own (one of which was actually for a marimba ensemble). Oh, and I've written a couple jazz combo pieces too (vibes, upright bass, piano, drumset).

HMmm.....Not much arranging for me. I can't pull it off very well. I write some string quartets, trios, duets, and am eorking on a Cello duet as we speak. I started a Triple Concerto, but can't find it...

*chuckle* that'd be cute, ver.

Yeah, well... I still love music a lot. I really wanted to be a band director, but you have to take 15 hours of nothing each semester and can't take any other classes. I had THREE HOURS a semester with no credit.

Its always hard to remember music after a time. I have to look for the tab and lyrics for the first guitar song I preformed in concert cause I can't remember a lick of it. Well, the only good thing when trying to remember music is that most the time one creates something new instead. And even at times that newly created thing is better than the original.

You think that's bad? Well, I had the arrangement ot the Overture to William Tell memorized in sixth grade. I had the first violin (the hardest) part. I can't remember it now.
