How did poking come to sd.net?

I've only poked once and it was unmitigated disaster. I got the size wrong, then a word wrong .... ack it was horrible.

I've never been poked on any forum I've ever joined. I don't post announcements of my arrival, and I think that is the key. I just start posting. On ASVS, way back whenever I joined it, I think my first post was telling Edam that he was full of shit, though I can't quite remember.
