Two things, and I call them Thing One and Thing Two.
Thing One, I admit to finding the stonewalling of any progress whatsoever to be a bit disturbing. Makes me wonder what's the point of trying to grow at all, if growth is not permitted. Or am I missing something?
Thing Two, define 'in-game year.'

Well, it is a slow process to grow. Colonies don't pop up fully equipped.White Haven wrote:Two things, and I call them Thing One and Thing Two.

And IIRC the whole point of this levelled power-approach was to force other, smaller, powers to form pacts and treaties and make the diplomacy part of this more lively, instead of all powers being equal.

In game year is however long it takes for a year to pass in game. It's a variable amount of time based on however long it takes to do it. The speed of time is a variable, but usually faster rate than real time.

How faster? Is there some mod-controlled clock?Beowulf wrote:In game year is however long it takes for a year to pass in game. It's a variable amount of time based on however long it takes to do it. The speed of time is a variable, but usually faster rate than real time.

OK, I'm gonna toss an idea out here. I was wondering if setting up extra game threads to follow certain story lines might be a good idea- for instance, an ERTC thread which would be solely for ERTC bills, votes, and debate in-character between Commission diplomats. Perhaps one for a United Nations, if we ever make one- that sort of thing. Thoughts?

I'd go for it, but I wonder how much activity would it have, a UN style thread would be probebly more active and usful then a thread for a single body.Thirdfain wrote:OK, I'm gonna toss an idea out here. On that kind of stuff, why not have a "Global Events" thread, where one of the mods run global events like information on the Trolls, Galactic time, and other major events.
On that matter, would some mod implement a counter(maybe based on some website), that will 'ding' when a galactic standerd year passes and we all know ships are built.

Eh, I'd actually prefer to keep it all together. Split it up and threads will start to fall through the cracks, it'll get harder to keep track of it all. On the flip side, I'm new at this, maybe I'm just smoking something.

Ah well, I'm running a minor for a reason, and that's because I'm raw new at all this. Don't mind me too much. Back to the earlier topic t hough, while I think Ace is looking for too MUCH growth, I do take issue with the idea of ZERO growth. Total stasis is a bit much to ask, I'd say.

Hmm. That assumes that every nation in the galaxy is putting that sort of thing at the precise same priority, and that no one is sitting pat on their infrastructure. But okay, s'not my call by any stretch, just musing on it.

If one player spends a lot of resources expanding, it will lead to an "arms race." Far wiser to take land through conquest, that's one of the few really good ways to become a lot more powerful over the course of an STGOD.Hmm. Actually I am referring to it. I posted a description of what happened. You then posted a contrary description of the same time frame. Therefore, my post was basically annoyed. If you have an issue with my post then post here or PM me. I'm operating under the assumption that the debris field is realistic and that the destroyer is significantly weaker then a cruiser, not to mention being hit with more missiles. I think that a debris field that dense is rather silly, and shooting down 2 stealthy probes in a bad scanning environment (the debris) with high ECM is sillier yet.InnocentBystander wrote:I think, perhaps, that you missed my post on page 10. Actually, we're working along very similar lines here. You just used a higher percentage. I didn't want construction rates to be too outrageous, but if this one works better for everyone, fine with me. I've got to admit the underlying math is easier.Beowulf wrote:Although the system itself seems ok, I think the actual numbers should be based off the initial ship points. Minimal would be around 5%, Normal 10%, Military Buildup 20%, Wartime 30%, Emergency 40%. This would result in the following numbers:Rogue 9 wrote:Okay, seeing how we still don't have a construction system, I sat down and did a few minutes of number crunching. I decided upon the normal growth rate of a minor power and went from there, scaling up based on the starting ships of the various power levels. The system for review is as follows:
Minimal military construction:
Minor; .5 cap, 1.5 crs, 7.5 esc
Regional; 1 cap, 3 crs, 15 esc
Major; 1.5 cap, 4.5 crs, 22.5 esc
Grand; 2 cap, 6 crs, 30 esc
Normal military construction:
Minor; 1 cap, 3 crs, 15 esc
Regional; 2 cap, 6 crs, 30 esc
Major; 3 cap, 9 crs, 45 esc
Grand; 4 cap, 12 crs, 60 esc
Arms Race/Military Buildup
Minor; 2 cap, 6 crs, 30 esc
Regional; 4 cap, 12 crs, 60 esc
Major; 6 cap, 18 crs, 90 esc
Grand; 8 cap, 24 crs, 120 esc
Wartime Production:
Minor; 3 cap, 9 crs, 45 esc
Regional; 6 cap, 18 crs, 90 esc
Major; 9 cap, 27 crs, 135 esc
Grand; 12 cap, 36 crs, 180 esc
Emergency Production:
Minor; 4 cap, 12 crs, 60 esc
Regional; 8 cap, 24 crs, 120 esc
Major; 12 cap, 36 crs, 180 esc
Grand; 16 cap, 48 crs, 240 esc
Note that wartime and especially emergency production are hard on the national economy; they represent the devotion of a large portion of the nation's industry to military buildup. These should not be undertaken lightly, and emergency production cannot be sustained for extended periods in any case. Details of this will be hammered out later; I can't stay online. As far as time scale goes, I tihnk it should be the above amount per in game year.Code: Select all
Cap Cru Esc Minimal Minor .75 1.5 12.5 Regional 1.5 3.5 25 Major 2.25 5 37.5 Grand 3 6.5 50 Normal Minor 1.5 4 25 Regional 3 7 50 Major 4.5 10 75 Grand 6 13 100 Buildup Minor 3 8 50 Regional 6 14 100 Major 9 20 150 Grand 12 26 200 Wartime Minor 4.5 12 75 Regional 9 21 150 Major 12.5 30 225 Grand 18 39 300 Emergency Minor 6 16 100 Regional 12 28 200 Major 18 40 300 Grand 24 52 400

On a completely unrelated note, I just re-read STGOD 4 and I'd like to say to all those who played it:
Thank you. It was a great game, thanks in no small part to the skill of it's players. Even at your worst (and STGOD4 did indeed hit that worst,) the game still ran.
I hope this game winds up as good!

Although I wish the last war had started a little later though. There were a few more things I wanted to do on Hudson

Well. It was pretty fun and I was extremely impressed by the "evil masterplan" later revealed. It would have been awesome to see it unfold.Darksider wrote:Longest running game we had.....

Damnit, Thirdfain, never say things like that. I think you jinxed the game.Thirdfain wrote:On a completely unrelated note, I just re-read STGOD 4 and I'd like to say to all those who played it...
Anyway, I know people are just starting their semesters again, but still, we need to finish this game within a week or two or it's going to die a slow and painful death with very intermittent posts from maybe one or two people (think of them as life support).
STGOD runs in spurts, there's a reason why the ones on the Archive are labeled things like "Thanksgiving 2000" "Winter 2000" etc. You can't draw them out, or the players will get too bored and lose interest. So basically we could try to get the players together to wrap it up, and then pick up where we left off over spring break or maybe in the summer.
Sound good?

I don't think it is time to end it already. The last one worked, too, maybe with a short hiatus, without shutting it down early.

Between network troubleshooting, me tearing my hair out due to network troubleshooting, and work being busy as FUCK, I've had time on, but not energy to mess around with things at this particular moment. This next week should, I dearly hope, be calmer and give me time.
