Yeah seriously. How does Lucas rationalize, then, that Yoda is so powerful yet he's maybe only the size of a mans leg? Do non-human's who are naturally bigger make better Jedi because their body can have more midichlorians?Petrosjko wrote:The midi/mitochondria quote just... bends the mind.
It only confuses the issue all the more rather than clarifies it.
There isn't any excuse for that event. It is on the level of Ewoks arriving in the nick of time and taking on the Empire, but it's WORSE.Petrosjko wrote:I just watched AotC again last week, first time since it came out, and I was like 'Wow, this is worse than I remembered.' The Geonosis jedi slaughter was ghastly.
Bob Brown's experiences only adds salt to the wound, so to speak. Seriously, the Jedi in the arena just makes me groan and wonder why. AOTC wasn't that bad at all, it's the only part I dislike almost violently (as opposed to TPM, where 10-20% is even watchable, AOTC at least had a good plot).
Yeah, I was thinking about Bob Brown the whole time I was watching those hippy goofballs jumping around and swinging their sabres.
Thing is, what's missing for me is that I could care less that Anakin is falling to the dark side. Having him throw that "It's not FAIR!" tantrum with Perky so early in the movie just sapped away what sympathy I might have had for him. It would've been better to establish him as a somewhat cocky but loyal and devout Jedi early, then, after he's established some intimacy with Perky, start complaining.
Instead of "Good man makes deal with the devil" the vibe is "Spoiled brat wants it all".

For anyone wondering about the acting, I'll say again, watch the deleted scenes of AOTC. The Padme family scene is one of the best acted/written scenes in the PT, so I kinda place the blame on really retarded soap opera dialogue and plotpoints in how and why Padme finally likes him, just made no sense.
Another thing is how they edit it, Lucas has the 2 hours timeslot so ingrained I think him and the editors mess it up. I remember on the commentaries them stating alot of character development scenes just took too long, I wonder what else got chopped that we haven't seen as deleted scenes. He mentions not being a great writer I also think he needs to admit he's not a great director either (at least in terms of getting what he wants out of his cast), he should just executive produce/creative control and call the shots from there.

I still wonder why the chose a bunch of hippies over kendoka who are at least familiar with swordplay.Petrosjko wrote:Yeah, I was thinking about Bob Brown the whole time I was watching those hippy goofballs jumping around and swinging their sabres.
Make no mistake, i think the way in which the PT has gone has been one missed opportunity after another. That said, I can't really fault Hayden for what he had to work with.Thing is, what's missing for me is that I could care less that Anakin is falling to the dark side.
Not really. He's not spoiled at all. He's been a monk all his life, sees a chick he wants to fool around with, and realises he can't because the Jedi disapprove of sex and happy thoughts. He isn't really spoiled at all, quite the reverse. Actually it's Padme who comes off as spoiled; she's the politician who represents her people; a leader who're well respected; she's more than a little confident and self-assured. Sometimes she looks like she's better than everyone else. She softens up when they hit Tattooine, but for the most part she's the one who comes off as spoiled.Instead of "Good man makes deal with the devil" the vibe is "Spoiled brat wants it all".
Really, I agree with you. Why didn't Lucas stick the deleted scenes into the DVD release, at least? The film feels incomplete IMO.Meest wrote:For anyone wondering about the acting, I'll say again, watch the deleted scenes of AOTC. Maybe it is more in the deleted scenes. It's just that his first solo scene with Perky comes across as brattish to me, summed up by the 'It's not FAIR!' I just hated that. Instead of making it even slightly subtle, the movie bludgeons us pretty much from the opening on 'Anakin is impetuous, impulsive, and prime for a fall to the dark side.'
I'd think that the better route would be to have him struggling more to be the good soldier, trying to accept the obviously outdated and somewhat senile guidance of the council, and ultimately failing. Instead he's a rebel from his initial dialogue onward.
I'm reminded of the atrocity that was the Sci-Fi Channel's take on Dune, with Paul Atreides acting a bit of the punk-ass brat in that as well. Very irksome.

If we're talking about a scene which bludgeons you over non-subtle dialogue, I have to say Obi-wan's and Anakin's little tiff at the start when they met with Padme. Still, I thought it was good because it conveyed the sense of awkwardness the scene needed.
And yes, Harrison's Dune... *shudder* Though apparently Children of Dune was about a million times better.

Harrison's Dune was fine- the brat Paul Atreides doesn't last long into the film, for obvious reasons. It was definitely a concious choice. Children of Dune is much better, though.Stofsk wrote:

Yeah, but he never had the gravitas I associated with Paul. Paul was an overly serious young man, but given that he was raised in an environment where he has to scan his spice before trying it and taking other precautions we'd consider utterly paranoid, that's reasonable.Vympel wrote:Harrison's Dune was fine- the brat Paul Atreides doesn't last long into the film, for obvious reasons. I regard it as being as flawed as the movie, but in different ways. To pick a scene that really bothered me- the rendition of Paul rejecting the notion of challenging and killing Stilgar. He essentially mocked it as a 'dumb old tradition', but in the context of the Fremen, it was a logical enough adaptation.
Both the miniseries and the movie didn't do the book justice, just in different ways. I'll check out Children of Dune sometime. I was so disappointed in the miniseries that I didn't even bother watching the sequel.
It's really good. Trust me. The actor who plays Leto is awesome.Petrosjko wrote:Both the miniseries and the movie didn't do the book justice, just in different ways. I'll check out Children of Dune sometime. I was so disappointed in the miniseries that I didn't even bother watching the sequel.

Answer: "Because it's his damn story and he's gonna tell it". I can respect that as a storyteller; even though as a fan of good storytelling I'd rather he get a little bit more content and style checks.Stofsk wrote:I like how he conceded he isn't that great of a writer, yet that begs the question: if he knows that about himself, why exactly DIDN'T he hire someone else to handle script affairs, like he did for ESB, and ROTJ?

I'd think it would fit so much better with the established story, if the reason he's "not reached his potential" is because he has learned how to stop people from dying using the Force and despite the machinery has to use it constantly on himself to keep the husk of himself alive. We know the Force seems to be harder to use on oneself quite often. Combine this with Yoda's comment about "strong am I in the Force, but not that strong" and he actually did end up surpassing Yoda.
Otherwise we have the Emperor, who keeps transfering between clone bodies, going after Luke because for some reason he can't/won't clone Anakin and either use his body or transfer Vader into a new clone body. It does bring up some questions.
