Just saw a report on my local news at dinner.

Seems the local residents in Bethesda are worried, WORRIED,
about a brand new PATRIOT battery on the grounds of the Naval
Surface Warfare installation, and it can be seen from the Clara
Barton Parkway, and are worried about it...

Idiots.

Its Bethesda, can you really expect anything other than overreaction to the slightest hint of a military prescence despite the fact that BNH is right there along with the Naval Observatory and oh hell half the rest of DC's government apparatus is only 5 miles away. Gotta love NIMBYs.

They're just worried about a "friendly fire" incident resulting in the loss of a jetliner. It's not as if Patriot batteries aren't prone to that

The plane was NOT shot down by accident, it was clearly full of TERRORISTS.

Besides, it's the Navy's SM-2 missiles that shoot down airliners, not the Army's Patriots.

actually its only a few of them elite "Andy Griffith delusion" having NIMBYers who don't want them missiles. The rest of the neighbors dont mind them.

does anyone know about the KLM shootdown by the USSR In 1983, you know we almost went to WW3 because of it.

Not really, and in any case Korean Airlines was known to have repeatedly and intentionally over flown Soviet airspace without permission to save fuel. It might not have been company police, but the pilots did it, in addition to which US RC-135's where known to follow similar routes. The KAL pilots just didn't believe the Soviets would shoot.

The program was full of crap. Hundreds of Americans where killed by enemy fire both from the Soviets and North Koreans and proubabbly a few other nations during the cold war and even since then and no war has occured. North Korea got away with capturing Pebeluo and shooting down an EC-121 close together and we didn't do anything. And that was before they had a very major Chemical or Biolgical missile threat to hold against us.
