Because R2 sticks out of the socket significantly. It's not just the dome head, you can see a lot of R2s "torso" as well.

Fit or not, there is so much I would have changed to make sure the R2s would fit in the damn ships. I love the Aethersprite Delta 7 and the N1 fighters but anyone could have come up with something way the hell better. Unfortunately I wasn't right and who ever took over for Doug Chiang didn't fare any better in the art dept. at Lucas films.

I blame Lucas actually. He's the one who approves concepts, they put all the art up in front of him and he selects the ones he likes.

It looks like they made the thing for the video game rather than the movie.

Just give us something that actually looks like it's the predecessor to the TIE Fighter for Christ sakes!

True but for some reason the word "superlaser" really works for me, I dig it.

He´s trying to bridge the Jedi fighters and the TIE fighters, to show how one group replaces the other. You know, "symbology"... :P

Yeah, but the thing is, Lucas said he wanted an astromech in them, and then they made all that shit, pretty much just adapting what they had by adding an astro slot to the fighter without any major redesign.

Fuck, I also forgot to add, Doug Chiang is the one who said when he saw Star Wars, that he loved it so much he immediately went home and 'IMPROVED' the X-Wing fighter. !!! Riiiiiight.

Like turbolaser, possibly derived from the (as I remember) single mention of "large turbopowered laser gun emplacements" in the ANH screenplay/script? :D (No offense, just a note.) Without a comparison between that and a (non-turbo) tank, I do not know how silly it is. (If the Republic used the AT-TE as the main battle tank, a seemingléy faster Juggernaught can be referred as turbo-tank without sounding weird.)

Nah, turbolaser didn't work for me, no reason, I just like "superlaser".
