Router Help

Post by Enigma »

When it comes to routers I am a complete retard. I have a linksys BEFSR41 series router and I am having trouble getting connected to the internet. I've connected the wires right and on the router it is shows that I'm connected to the router and the internet but I can't get access to the net on my comp. I can't make heads or tails on the router's config screen.

HELP!!!!!

How do you normally connect to the net?
Cable modem. Is it static or dynamic IP?
Dialup?
DSL?

That's usually the easiest of all to setup.
Here's a Linksys Knowledge Base article that goes step by step on how to set it up.

Be sure to clone your PC's MAC address onto the router as a lot of ISP's use the MAC as an additional security measure.

I'll try it tomorrow and keep you updated should I mess up. :)

Strange. I can now access the internet through the router and the only thing different was that I turned off the computer when I connected the router. Very weird. Now to connect my father's computer to the router.

Oh and I can access the internet through Firefox but I can through IE. I know IE is horrible but my sister uses it and I would appreciate it on figuring out how to get IE to work.

EDIT: scratch that. IE now works. But now to connect the other comp. :)

WhooHoo! I've managed to get both computers to work with the router and I can access my father's computer through mine but can't the other way around.

His is a P133 using Win95.

Did you set file sharing permissions on your machine?

Yes, but right now I am trying to get the old computer to work without crashing during boot up. Does Win 95 have a similar program as msconfig?

I mean in WinMe I can run msconfig under Start>Run and then access the windows drivers but what do I do in Win95?

You can't

If you can afford it dump the Win95 and get a new computer. It's unsupported and a pice of crap nowdays.

No offense Enigma, but as a professional tech, we hate people like your father.

Well it is not his fault. My brother originally bought the computer and passed it to my father once I built my own. Over all it has been working fine and I am sure that if I were to reformat the computer it would work excellently. But I do not want to reformat it. My father doesn't use the computer much except for financial purposes.

...financial data stored one an OS that has precisely no security features at all, and has been unsupported for a good while? JESUS.

Well, that computer hasn't been connected to the internet nor networked to any computer for at least 5 years and my father only started using it for financial purposes a couple of years ago.

Ach, I've found the source of the crash, when I disconnected my father's computer from the router the computer boots up fine but if I connect it to the router it crashes on startup, something to do with VxD?
