DSL and BEFSX41

Post by White Haven »

Alright, at long last, my DSL is in, and it works great...IF I connect it directly to one of the two, soon to be 3-4 PCs in the apartment. For some unearthly reason, I can't get my Linksys BEFSX41 to work with it. It's a static-IP connection, and I made sure to reset the router to factory defaults, then put in the config information. I know the config works, because...well, it's working right now, on this system. This is driving me mad. Any ideas?

Plug everything in first. Connect everything. Then turn everything off (I assume it's alright to turn your modem off). Wait like 30 seconds. Turn the modem on. Wait until all the lights stop blinking and stuff and become stable. Wait 30 more seconds. Then turn the router on.

Wait a little bit. If it still doesn't work, try waiting like half an hour, or something. One of my routers did that and spontaneously started working about an hour after I connected it.

Additionally, another thing you can try is go into the router's config page and see if there's an option that lets you copy your ethernet card's MAC address and use that instead of your router's. That may also help.
What's her bust size!?

Did you set the linksys for PPPoE?
I set this exact same router up for SBC DSL and had no problems.

It's not PPPoE, no login or any such sillyness. Just a straight static IP. And once I'm done with some gratuitous downloading, I'll try that, Shin. I hate dealing with cut-rate bullshit, a REAL router has telnet support and shell access, I could troubleshoot this from INSIDE.

If telnetting is what you want, try this one

Zyxel Prestige 334

I paid $60 from Newegg.
For the money this unit's untouchable.
SPI, telnet, command line configuration, and very reliable.
I like it better than my old BEFSR41 and much more reliable than my piece of crap D-Link DI-624.

I'm a Cisco geek, what can I say? I got this one for free as a Christmas gift from work, though, so I can't complain. And as I'm a retail computer tech, Newegg can suck me :)

Well, I'm not and they've got some good prices. :P

Seriously though, my little home network is nice and stable.

RCA cable modem w/static IP into the Zyxel
Desktop machine into the Zyxel
Trendnet TE100-P2U1P print server* into the Zyxel
Laptop into the Zyxel via the DI-624 configured as wireless AP only.
Extra port to connect a client's (I do fix'em's on the side) PC to.

Everything is manually configured.

I'm happy with my Zyxel.
I can't say the same about my D-Link.

*Printers:
HP LaserJet 1200
HP Photosmart 7960

Update...still no dice. I can set up a LAN over the router with no problem, so they're communicating with it fine. I can ping both sides of the router fine (private LAN IP and public net IP), so it's getting its proper IP and such. The same IP, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS servers work fine on either of my systems. I can see the router is talking with the modem by the activity lights. I know the cable is good, as I've used them in successful other networks. I can't see a single point of failure I'm not already PAST! *tears hair out*

The only suggestion I can offer at this stage is this:
Does your ISP check the MAC address of your ethernet card as a security measure?
If so, you might try cloning the MAC of the PC the modem works on to the router.
And don't forget to power the modem on/off once you clone the MAC onto the router.

Also, while you're mucking around with the router, disable SP2's firewall if you're using it and any other firewall software.

When I was first setting up my print server, I couldn't get windows to detect the damned thing no matter what I tried.
It turned out to be the SP2 firewall interfering with communications.
Once I got the PS configured, I could turn the firewall back on.

Linksys tech support had this little gem in the KB:
Question
I am unable to access the Internet, but there is a WAN IP Address present on the status page.

Answer

First you will need to open up your internet browser (Internet Explorer/Netscape) and go to http://192.168.1.1. You will be prompted for a username and password. By default there is no username and the password is admin. Once you arrive at the routers setup page click on the Advanced tab.

Once the page finishes loading, you'll find you will be on the "Filters" tab. Look down and make sure that there are no numbers other than 0 in the boxes on that page. If there are, then you will need to replace them with 0's and click Apply, then Continue.

Once you've done that, you're going to want to look for Dynamic Routing at the top, and then click on it. Once that page finishes loading, make sure that the "Working Mode" is set to Gateway, not “Router”, and that tx and rx are set to Disable not RIP-1 or RIP-2.

If a static IP address has been set on the computer, verify the gateways matches the Router's LAN IP Address. If there aren't any installed gateways, add the Router's LAN IP Address. When setting static IP Addresses, you must also input the DNS servers. For more information on assigning static IP addresses, please see the related article on assigning static IP addresses.

If you’re still having difficulties, please contact Linksys Product Support.
Hope you get it working as I know this shit can be frustrating.
It's why I think networking is closer to voodoo than anything else.

I'm impressed. I expected the Linksys KB to bear some vague semblance to their actual products. The tab's called 'advanced routing,' there are no filters mentioned there, the 'dymanic routing' section is a fueld, not a link, and assorted other pronounced differences. Asses can't keep their shit straight.

That's the hell of it, I'm something of a net tech on the side, I can configure a REAL Cisco router from the inside, I know how this shit is SUPPOSED to work. Bah.

That KB article was probably written for a firmware revision that was out of date 2 years ago.

Yup. Look in the webpage you showed me.

Yeah, they do. Heaven forbid that they actually improve Linksys' products via that ownership, no, no, they just put a little 'Cisco Systems' decal on them and move on. Dammit, give me TELNET ACCESS and command-line controls.

Don't some of the Linksys's use a modified Linux for firmware?
I remember reading something about user modded Linksys firmwares being available.

I'm not quite THAT desperate yet, firmware-fuggling is dangerous.

Cisco owns Linksys but the latter company more or less operates as an autonomous subsidiary. It would be a dangerous game to play if they started porting IOS over to Linksys and kept the rock-bottom pricing.

Shit, I don't need full functionality, all I really want is a basic shell to telnet various interfaces from and get interface statistics and such. As it is, it's a g'damned closed box to me, I've got DICK of a way to localize the point of failure.
