Sorry to see you go, Rogue. Best of luck, and whatever your irritation and all, do not let your studies suffer over this, as best you can.

Sorry to see ya go man. I'll remember you as one of the first guys on this board I ever got into a heated debate with...it was fun :) The best thing you can do now is do well this semester. Although that might further reinforce your parent's beliefs that without a computer you will do better in school. Depends on how nazi-ish your parents are I guess...will they reward you, or screw ya over more?

As for actually needing a computer to do well in college, that's pretty much a load of crap from my experience. It does help, no doubt, but it's not essential in any way. Even if your computer labs at your school are always full (I guess we just don't have that problem here at Purdue...we have tons of labs and they're never full...but we're a pretty big school), you can always use a buddy's computer for an hour or three. Very convienent and helpfu? Yes. Absolutley necessary? Not unless your an English Major :)

Hopefully we'll see ya around soon man

I'm sorry to see you go. For what it's worth, I'm sorry for my behaviour in the PSW Wes Janson thread. I was under a great deal of stress, frustration, and bitterness at the time, none of which was related to your thread and I fear I took it out on you, for no good reason.

Jeez man, that is harsh. But take it from me, focusing on uni is the best reason to abondon this board for a while.

Wicked Pilot wrote:Well your problem sucks but the fact of the matter is that students have gotten through college without computers for centuries.
People have studied science without the help of computers (at least as modern people know them) for three centuries plus too. Doesn't mean their advanced studies today would get very far with no computer intervention :D

Anyway, sorry about that, if you are still here to read it, Rogue. Have you tried explaining to him the fact that the Bulletin Boards you go (at least one of them) to have a wide variety of people expert in many fields, and that they might be able to help you with your work (I've seen many help requests on this board) and your grades? Inform them that because of their ill-advised intervention, one of your valuable sources of information, even if they ignore the morale factor is cut off, and tell them honestly you predict a massive decrease in what's left of your grade. Try that. You have nothing much to lose left anyway. It isn't like they are going to take you off university just for saying that.

I'd miss you, man. Really.

When I first went to college, my parents didn't want to get me a computer, after all my sister had made it through college without a computer.

Then I pointed out that my sister started college 11 years earlier and that she wasn't an English major.

I'd place that possibility somewhere between Buffalo Bills winning the super bowl and a hockey team winning the Stanley this year.

I don't dare. It wouldn't work, and frankly, looking at this board would probably confirm everything they think I'm doing wrong. Dad earlier demanded a list of everyone I correspond with online (I did not comply) for the purpose of determining just what the hell I'm doing and who is likely to be a total waste of my time as he sees it, so he could forbid me contact/tell them off. (He's the next thing from computer illiterate. I don't think he quite comprehends the nature of a message board in the first place; the only thing he uses the Internet for is e-mail and thinks everyone else should do the same.)

Anywho, I'm thoroughly miffed now. My computer lab account for the public labs has been disabled for unknown reasons and two of the three computers in the dorm's lab have malfunctioning Internet connections. I'm currently on the only one with a working line. I had to wait a good 20 minutes for it, and not even a tenth of the people who live in this dorm have moved back in yet. I can't rely on this alone if I'm to be dependent on labs.

Oh, and as part of the aforementioned computer illiteracy on Dad's part, I don't have any computer related equipment to my name anymore; he took everything down to the last floppy disk, not that I can get at the floppy drives in most of the labs anyway, since the boxes are padlocked into cases underneath the computer desks to prevent theft and vandalism. The lab computers delete any documents saved on them every night, so I can't save anything that way. I can e-mail them to myself, but they won't let anyone download attachments. So basically I have to write my term paper in one sitting. Joy.

Can't find some schmuck looking to offload a P2 or something? Sure, it'd suck, but for net and word processing, it'd get the job done. Plus, once you ARE independent, you can invite your parents over and show them your computer, give them the finger, and threaten to press charges for theft and blackmail. Everyone wins.

Note: I wouldn't stop at threatening, but that's because I'm a vindicative bastard with no single shread of parental respect left.

This board is highly educational! Highly educational! Just keep him away from ARSE... and OT... and the HOS... and all the SF and Fantasy stuff... and everything else... and... oh crap. Well, it's educational.

You could try downloading the SD.net memberlist, zipping it, gzipping it, and sending it as an email attachment to him. The sheer length of the damn thing would confirm his fears---if he could read it! HahahahahahHAHAHAHAH*passes out*

No you don't. If you don't have any aversion to copy and paste, you could just write your term paper as plain text without any formatting and email versions to yourself. When you want to print it, you copy and paste into a word processor and add formatting. It's a little heavy on the hoop-jumping, but it should be mostly painless.

Rogue, this sucks.

If uni THERE is anything like uni HERE, you should try talking to student services. They might be hippy morons, but they can probably help you get what you need, at least for assessment. If you weren't so far away you'd have a courier package on your doorstep tomorrow morning :(

Well, you have to try something, I guess.
Dad earlier demanded a list of everyone I correspond with online (I did not comply) for the purpose of determining just what the hell I'm doing and who is likely to be a total waste of my time as he sees it, so he could forbid me contact/tell them off.
You can give him a partial list. He doesn't need to know anything, but what you need to do now act meek (without actually being meek) if logic doesn't work. Put my name on it, since it is not that valuable and I'm not in your country (I'd like to see that butthole try and get me). Find all the experts on the board. Use the search function to aggressively search for any useful posts and threads they made, and quote them right along with the list (he doesn't need to know DW is a foul swearer, he needs to know he's a professional engineer). I'd love to see your Dad try and tell off DW, and see how DW fixes him if he bugs him in any way. Maybe it'd even make the man see reason.
(He's the next thing from computer illiterate. I don't think he quite comprehends the nature of a message board in the first place; the only thing he uses the Internet for is e-mail and thinks everyone else should do the same.)
To be fair
Anywho, I'm thoroughly miffed now. My computer lab account for the public labs has been disabled for unknown reasons and two of the three computers in the dorm's lab have malfunctioning Internet connections. I'm currently on the only one with a working line. I had to wait a good 20 minutes for it, and not even a tenth of the people who live in this dorm have moved back in yet. I can't rely on this alone if I'm to be dependent on labs.
I'm luckier. Even if my laptop craps out or gets stolen (both of which had happened already in less than 3 short years), I've got about 20-26 (I never counted, but the entire little class fit nicely) generally reliable computers in my Earth Science lab which don't seem to block anything but BitTorrent (BT crawls on the school net, probably because of a firewall somewhere) that I can use, and only 100 competitors in all (the lecturers have their own computers, so the chances they'd bug us is slim). Because of that, I never had to resort to a public lab.
Oh, and as part of the aforementioned computer illiteracy on Dad's part, I don't have any computer related equipment to my name anymore; he took everything down to the last floppy disk,
UNless he's cutting off your money or demanding you send a complete accounting of your expenses, you can probably "embezzle" your lunch money for a few floppy disks or even CD-Rs. They are dirt cheap.
I can e-mail them to myself, but they won't let anyone download attachments.
Make a series of E-mails out of the essay, unformatted. Keep each E-mail to 50KB or less (I bet they would have a size limit for received E-mails with such a stingy lab). Then spend one session in the lab gluing it all together with Cut and Paste (they can't possibly be stopping Cut and Pasting of text) and formatting it.

You know what? What the hell was I thinking? I have admin powers on a largely abandoned board. I'll use that. :D Hell, that particular board can even do tables, superscripts, and subscripts. I think I'm good.

And Faram, I already have a Gmail account and six invites. I suppose I should have said something earlier. :P

Scrounge man. Ask around, get an old box from a friend, beg borrow or steal any parts you need to get up and running right, buy a 10 doller ethernet card, slap an old version of windows or a new version of linux on the fucker and your all set. Oh, and just to make sure your rents cant get any use out of the box they took, make sure there's a bios password on it. I'd like to see them try and figure out how to reset a mobo using jumpers. :D (in other words, they probably won't be able to figure out, seeing what you've said about them, thus preventing them from being able to use it/get any info about you out of it).
