Rooney won't face criminal investigation ... for WHAT?

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will not face a police investigation for his goal celebration after scoring against Liverpool on Saturday.

The former Everton player ran to the Kop and cupped his ears in a defiant gesture to the home fans.

Inspector George Dawson said: "It looks like Rooney hasn't committed a criminal offence so he won't be investigated."

Rooney - who had a mobile phone thrown in his direction - is also set to escape a Football Association charge.

What the hell could he be charged with?

What you'll see is that there sure isn't much more detail available, I was hoping somebody who's been paying more attention to the EPL would know why Rooney could possibly be in trouble with the cops over this ... the FA I guess I can understand.

Well playing for Man United should be a criminal offence, but apart from that i can't see anything, unless it's some law some law about provoking people. It's not like there hasn't been worse incidents of provoking opposing fans.

Plus under the idiotic new FIFA rules he didn't take his shirt off or anything so he's clear on that.

Some people suggested he should be charged for provoking the crowd. Apparently, it's a crime to celebrate after scoring. One fuckwit even threw a mobile phone at him.

Celebration penalties suck. They suck ass. They're probably the thing I despise the most about my sport of choice, college football.

The jist of it pretty much is that by running over to the Kop (where the most rampant Liverpool home fans reside, for those not versed in English Soccer Lore), and making the silly 'I can't hear you' gesture, he was trying to provoke trouble.

Its not smart but its not criminal either.

He made his gesture to the supporters of the opposing team (the sign language roughly translates as "You're not singing any more") and so his actions are a little more than a straightforward goal celebration. It's potentially provocative behaviour, and since players are subject to UK criminal law during a match as well as FA behaviour rules, he could be considered as commiting "behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace" (at a guess) - which would be a criminal offence. It was obviously decided however, that his actions did not in fact constitute such.
