Codec Problem

I've got a bunch of film files on my comp, a few recently downloaded, and quite large. So I load up Windows Media Player, and it goes to search for the codec, only to find that it's not there.

This is odd. I'm in IE 6, so I shouldn't have any difficulty, I don't think...

Anyone have any ideas? Help? Please? Someone?

do you have the error message and which codec its looking for. mabye we can help find them.

An Invalid Media Type Was Specified

Clicking 'Details' yields the following:

The appropriate codec is not installed on your computer
Error ID = 0x80040200, Remedy ID = 0x00000000
To play most streaming media, you must decompress the compressed data before playing it. The file that decompresses the information is known as a codec. If the codec is not available on your computer, Windows Media Player attempts to download and install it.

This error indicates that the required codec was not downloaded. This could be because you do not have the appropriate browser or your browser’s Internet security settings are too high and will not allow you to download the codec. Make sure that you have at least Internet Explorer version 4.0 or later installed on your computer.

To install the latest version of Internet Explorer on your computer, visit the Internet Explorer download page on the Microsoft Web site. If you are able to upgrade your browser, try playing the file or stream again, this should force your computer to download the appropriate codec and you should be able to view or hear the streaming media.

Note Internet Explorer does not have to be set as your default browser to download the codec or for the Windows Media Player to function properly.

Are any of these divx movies? One time I had to download divx codecs to play some movies I found on Kazaa.

Right-click on the movie, select "properties" then try and find what is the Video Compression listed as. Post your results here.

Usually when I have this problem I just download a thousand DivX codecs and it eventually works.

This can also happen if the video has somehow gotten corrupted or you just didn't download the whole video.

The DivX thing fixed it.

But now, I find that whatever cheapskate made the video didn't put in sound! DAMN HIM!

Episode 22 of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Director's Cut, Subtitled.

A friend has been showing us the shows, and I was asleep on the floor when he was showing Episodes 21-22, so I needed to catch up on the plot.

Have you installed the correct sound codecs? Unlike video, Windows Media doesn't complain on a missing sound codec -- it simply plays silence.

This one might be using a different sound codec, hence it fails to play sound. The old Divx3.11 movies used a special Divx audio codec (newer Divx movies use MP3 audio). which was a bit of a bitch because they took it out of the newer codecs so the older ones don't play sound. Try grabbing an old 3.11 codec and installing it (and then use Virtualdub to transcode the audio stream to MP3).

doom9.net has a pretty large variety of codecs available. You should check there, especially under the "codec" and "filters" headings. AC3 audio was the one that's given me trouble in the past.

Also sometimes Media Player doesn't want to play divX:)3 alpha movies because they were made with a ripped driver. I recommend an alternative player (my favorite is bsplayer)
