Do you shut down your computer? Or put it on suspend?
Moderator: Thanas
Since I'm running a version of windows which can stay up for as long as needed (aka not a Win9X OS), I just leave everything running. I normally turn the monitor off on the desktop if I'm going to be away for a while.
The Windows servers at the place I work at, have been up for almost a month now. AC failled in the server room & tripped the power at Christmas/New years. Needless to say the UPS could handle 4-5 days without power.

Have you checked all the fans lately? That usually means one crapped out on you.Mad wrote:My main computer, slow as it is, has a loud fan (which somehow got quieter...)

If I'm going to be away from the computer for more than 30 minutes, it gets shut down. I won't personally waste power for no reason.

Yes. I'm not sure which fan was making the noise, but it is now running silently.Psycho Smiley wrote:Have you checked all the fans lately? That usually means one crapped out on you.
Not nearly as weird as the "only overheats when the overheating warning alert is active" problem I had on another computer, but that's for another thread... (Yes, the system was physically cooler after I turned the warning beep off in BIOS setup because it was constantly going off. I can only gather that the circuitry for it was defective...)

I keep mine on pretty much 24/7. I'm on and off of it throughout the day between classes, and listen to my music collection while sleeping. Plus, it's important to have my AIM up at all times. Well, to a college student it is anyway
When I step away I lock it and turn off the monitor and speakers. About once a week I'll run virus scans/adware scans, and restart it to get rid of any of those little things windows likes to do to ya when you leave your comp on too long.
BTW it's my 2 year anniversary on these boards...even if I spent one of those years lurking. Sweet

I try not to shut off my POS tower, because I'm afraid it won't start up again.

Its on practically all day and sometimes over the night as well. However, I do prefer to give it breaks where I shut it all down for a few minutes every now and then. Most of the time I just shut off the monitor though.

Because I hate restarting the computer, I generally leave it on all the time. My monitors are designed to turn off after 5 minutes of non use which elimentates the annoying nightlight effect (although one time I found out my video player disables this so I got a night of waking up to a bright shiny desktop one day I paused to watch the rest in the morning)
Beware Windows. Linux Comes.

I shut it down every night. Just to save power. Unless I'm downloading of course.
