Difference between Mandrakelinux 10.1 and FedoraCore 5.*
Anybody know the difference between them? I am interested in knowing because Mandrake has been pissing me off lately.
And I cast my crown before God Above
Sayin’ “I don’t deserve this act of love”
Then He picks me up and says to me
“You are my child and I love you, oh you are my child and I love you”
-----------------------------
And I need to take these trials, and listen to what God says
I need to be refined; I need to be strengthened
These trials will teach me, they’ll teach me how to live
I want them to teach me, I want to be like Christ

I haven't personally used Fedora Core, but their websites both offer alot of information.

Fedora Core tends to be very bleeding-edge from what I've heard, comparable to Mandrake Cooker release candidate snapshots.
Perhaps you could elaborate on what's bugging you about Mandrake. I've found that aside from a few bugs Mandrake official releases are very stable.

Mandrake is easier. 'Nuff said.

The bugs I'm running into are 1) I can't use the OpenOffice.org suite, 2) I can't use some of the games, and 3) WheneverI plug my flash drive into it, Konqueror screws up half the time.

I was able to start OO.org Writer ONCE, and then after that, it wouldn't run. The games used to work, but for some reason, they just stopped. As for the flash drive, I can access it through the shell when Konqueror fails.

Try creating a new user and logging in as that user to see if your problems are related to local user-specific configuration changes you've inadvertently made. I've been using MDK 10.1 for a while and I've never had any of these problems you describe. I can even play commercial DVDs on it with no hitches.JeanLucPicard wrote:I was able to start OO.org Writer ONCE, and then after that, it wouldn't run. The main problem with flash drives (and this is common to all Linux distros) is handling how to mount them. Mandrake has a system where they've integrated RedHat kudzu into the draktools, and whenever a flash drive is plugged in, it's automatically mounted via kudzu. When you unplug it, kudzu automatically unmounts it.
That doesn't always work with a GUI though. Konqueror tends to be a bit flaky with automagic (un)mounts, while Nautilus is a bit more stable concerning that. I'd say that the safest way to go would be to plug in the drive, then open Konqueror and try to access it. Close Konqueror when you're done, then unplug the drive.
If that doesn't work, then kudzu may not have detected it properly. Generally the device should be /dev/sdb1 or similar.
Here's the line from my fstab:
If you could run 'cat /etc/fstab' in the terminal and then paste the relevant line in (look for /mnt/removable), I could probably help you more. To paste btw, just select the text in the terminal and then click the middle mouse button while in the post reply box.

Code: Select all
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/removable auto umask=0,user,iocharset=utf8,sync,kudzu,noauto,exec,users 0 0
