Anyone here play Dawn of War?

They are melee units, and pretty tough ones at that. Use them to get behind your enemie's melee line and engage their ranged units. Lighter troops like guardians will just fall apart to them quickly, while heavier troops will no longer be able to pour fire into your troops.

Assaults are the SM's "early" melee squad, aren't they?

Thanks I just found that they were killed way too quickly and I just decided to use the fire power of my marines instead.

AMs and Predators make a nice combo, too, since they're both fast as hell. You can be in and out before your enemy has a chance to do shit. AMs alone make good rear-area raiders too, jump 'em over a mountain range and mack something. They're not superdurable, but they're impossible to pin down.

The secret is to get the melta bomb upgrade and keep them moving. They can utterly wreck a building in a few seconds and be gone before your opponent knows what the hell happened.

I find that a squad or two of marines with 4 heavy bolters each can make mince meat of nearly everything in the early to middle game. Its only when vehicles and rockets appear that they become less effective.
