Maxia Asenscia had been chosen for another reason besides the strength of its resistance. It's location near to the capital and the fierceness of the resistance had lead to Tendao the Merciless to assign his best subcommander to taking it for the Ruinous Powers. Gathor the Reaver watched the pods penetrate the fluctuating void shields of Maxia Asenscia. "So the Imperials want to play," he muttered. He turned back into his command center. "This new unit, the 725th Ascendent Guard. Have we assigned them chaplins?"

"Yesss, lord," hissed his lieutenant Valkor. "Theyyy have committed themselves to our cause. Theyy are noww hheriticsss and traitorsss."

"But they are still a bunch of PDF cowards who defected rather than die horribly defending for their God-Emperor. Drive them into the fighting against our new arrivals. I yearn to see the results."

Prius squatted behind a rock as his men settled into a perimeter watch. On the ground, his data link had updated the status of his unit. He grimaced- bad for men to die without a chance to fight back, but as the Emperor wills. They would overcome.

As soon as they got their bearings and linked up with the resistance, that was. The void shield and signal jamming had prevented them from getting word of their arrival in, so it was going to be a matter of living long enough to link up. He began gathering the troops in, barking orders rapid fire to his platoon leaders. No enemy contact yet. So far it had actually been easier than his training drops in the Schola, when they'd been set under pitched assault conditions from the moment the pods landed.

He had no doubt it would get much harder in the near future, though.

They wore PDF uniforms with hastily made stars of chaos painted over the aquila. At full strength their regiment numbered two thousand, but now they were little more than half that. Many of their officers and NCOs were dead, with the leaders of the mutiny rising up to take their place. Brutal followers of the dark powers had joined their regiment, terrifying fanatics marked by the Ruinous Powers. They acted as commissars, commanding obediance through fear.

They were driven towards the landing site. A few of them rode in Chimeras or Sentinel Walkers. Most darted from rubble to rubble, lasguns clutched in fearful hands. Among their number were several chaos imps. The unholy familiars watched their charges and relayed what they saw back to their summoners.

Prius sensed the mass incoming. Time to move. Weapons and gear offloaded, he voxed the order to the troops.

Light on your feet, Carnis had admonished him. Engage when you dictate the terms, if at all possible.

The Sword quickly began making their way through the wreckage, leaving behind the drop pods, and a few surprises in the vicinity.

The 725th advanced cautiously to the landing zone. They found most of the booby traps, but not all. Aeveral men were blown to pieces or riddled with his velocity metal. And then the killing started.

High up on the ruins of the hive towers, snipers crouched with long lases. Draped in cameoline cloaks and wearing insulated stealth suits, they picked targets and fired. Two troopers fell, having been hit in the chest by hot shot rounds. The snipers abandoned their posts and crept around to new positions as the 725th's movement slowed to a crawl.

Prius got the reports from the scouts, the sniper shots having put the Sword to ground before they'd figured out they were aimed at the foe and not them.

It would seem contact had been established. Quickly assessing their relative positions, he ordered a wide sweep. If the heretics had truly stalled, it would be possible to engage from the flank and give them a bit of a bloody nose before retreating toward the friendlies.

Quickly and efficiently the Sword began moving through the rubble, taking an angle that would allow a quick hit and fade against the renegade PDF troopers.

Multilasers from the Chimeras lashed out at the upper part of the shattered hive towers. Skirmishers spread out and fire teams were set up as the traitors advanced. The Sentinels probed ahead, gingerly stepping around a large hole in the deck.

Judge General Navarchos made a hand gesture. His Arbites had taken heavy casaulties, but they were still ready to fight. As were the PDF troopers under his command. A soldier leveled a rocket launcher and fired through the gap in the wall. The rocket struck a Sentinel just below the multilaser and shredded the walker's inside. The wrecked machine toppled forward and hit the deck with a resounding crash. Navarchos's men were already moving to another position.

Two platoons forward, one settling behind to lay an ambush on the inevitable pursuit. Prius crept forward, Varian at his side. Neutralizing the Chimeras would be the first order of business. As the troops took position, the heavy weapons troops lined up their shots. He opened a channel on the vox to his platoons as he lined up his hellrifle.

"Engage."

Fire lashed out from the Sword positions, half a dozen rockets and other heavy weapons hammering toward the Chimeras, hellguns blazing for the infantry. Two of the unit's four snipers aimed for any vehicle commanders bold enough to be riding exposed.

The heretic troopers withered under the Sword's barrage. A dozen were killed or seriously injured within seconds of the first volley. Multiple rocket hits set off the ammo inside one Chimera and sent its turret high in the air in a column of fire. Another burned sullenly with a cratered side.

As the loyalist snipers found new positions and began to hunt for new targets the 375th began to pull together. Fire teams moved up to the point of contact, leap frogging and providing fire cover for each other. A surviving Chimera turned on the Sword with heavy bolter and its turret mounted multilaser. The surviving Sentinel engaged as well.

As the 375th brought new squads and weapon teams into position, so did the loyalists. A pair of Arbites set up a heavy stubber in the ruins of a stack. One hundred meters away PDF survivors set up an autocannon with a commanding view of the battlefield. They went at their tasks with grim intensity and cold competence. They were men without hope, hard men who had seen horrors beyond their imagining and who had been condemned to survive in hell.

Their comrades moved into position below them. Navarchos's men took up positions and waited for the enemy to come. Soon they would have a chance to vent their hatred and rage and fear on those that had betrayed them.

Prius fired one more shot, just missing his target as he dived for cover. The renegades had taken a hard blow, but they were decisively establishing a superior weight of fire. Time to fall back. He called for a withdrawal. The Sword began to yield ground, collecting their wounded as they went. They worked to gain distance from their pursuers. Along their at an angle waited the second platoon, under the personal command of the Space Marine Yashida, dug in and waiting for the enemy to come their way.

From the looks of things, they were going to manage to divert a significant portion of the enemy's main force away from the growing engagement with the loyalist forces of Cyrus Gamma.

The autocannon opened up, pumping shell after shell into a Chimera. The volley tears open the front of the tanks and rips into the interior. Smoke poors from the inside of the ruined tank. The commander attempts to leave the wreck through the top hatch, but is picked off by two different snipers.

The remaining Sentinels retreat, their gunners having been picked off by snipers. Down on the lower levels the heavy stubber opens up, raking the positions of the 375th. The loyalist squads add their own fire to the conflict. Navarchos fires three precious Executioner rounds at an enemy fire team before switching to rifled slugs. Grenade launchers, flamers, and a precious plasma gun add to to the carnage created by lasguns and autoshotguns.

As the blood and bodies pile up, the new commander of the 375th makes a decision. If he retreats, the warlord will certainly kill him. Only advancing will save his hide. He orders his few surviving mortars to open up, knowing that some of the enemy positions are close to those of his own men. The other decision he makes is easier.

Not all of the loyalists had been killed or subsequently tortured to death and their had some men who had been less than enthusiastic about the regiments change of allegiance. They had been further augmented with some of the healthier looking slaves that had been pressed into service. These unfortunates had been outfitted with control collars and close quarters weaponry. He turned Captain Draker. "Unleash the slave units."

Damnation, artillery. One of the things his unit has no answer for, unfortunately. At least it wasn't a heavy barrage, like the Earthshakers that used to pound the shit out of a predetermined area near where his cadet class had to dig in and spend a couple of days, to get the sense of what living under a constant bombardment was like. Of course, on occasion a round or two would 'fall short', though the prevailing theory among the cadets was that such events weren't mishaps at all...

As the infantry force pursuing them passed into the kill zone, second platoon lashed out with fire. In the distance, strange screams and howls could be heard, that seemed to be coming closer...

The heretics fell back as mortar rounds fell nearby and loyalist fire continued to take its toll. They didn't have the stomach for this, but the brutal chaos chaplins prevented it from becoming a total route. These terrible warriors were openly touched by the Ruinous Powers and desired to attract the further attention of their dark masters. Better equipped than their PDF brethren and possessing a zealot's drive, they were terrible beings indeed. The 375th held the line.

Three score bipedal beasts came howling out from the cover of a large hab building. Their flak armour was reinforced with patwork metal plates and the most ambitious soldiers held the controllers for their collars. Swords and axes were gripped by the cannon fodder. The drugs surging through their systems made them indifferrent to pain or injury. They would not stop. They had to be stopped.

The lopped across the open ground with chemically augmented speed. They did not notice the loss of one of their own to a mortar round. Nothing mattered to them but the opportunity to kill.

As the beasts loped their way, Prius drew his chainsword, noting that Varian had drawn his weapon as well. The Sword had begun digging in as the traitors drive stalled under the rain of fire, both from the loyalists and the mortars.

So they were counting on the beasts to do the work of breaking the line. They would be sorely disappointed in...

Suddenly Prius slammed sideways, ramming into Varian and knocking both of them into a metal-strewn crater. A mortar shell slammed home nearby, battering them with the concussion, but the deadly fragments at least sailed over their heads.

Hellguns fired at the charging horde as the heavy stubber emplacement opened up on them. They fell. Indifferent to pain and injury as they were, the drugged slaves still had physical limits. Cooked chests, shattered skulls, severed spines, and the like still stopped them cold. Horrificly, several that had been hit by a flamer continued to rush forward as they inhaled fire, a monstrous testament to the power of the human body.

The tattered remnants fo the holwing band hit Prius's line. Wounded and crazed they howled as they swung their weapons at the Sword. They made up for a lack of skill with drug enhanced fury.

The Sword had been pretty uniformly armed with some form of close-combat weapons, and they fought back with fervor and skill. The recent training at the hands of Yoshida showed in their tactics, as they ganged up on their opponents with gusto. What few unengaged troopers remained laid down suppressive fire against the rest of the enemy unit.

Prius raised his chainsword as one of the beasts leapt into their crater, only to watch it get blasted back by Varian, who brandished his force rod in a high guard position. As he leapt out of the crater, he noted the rather jellied remains the blast had left for a moment as he cut down its controller. Another one closed in, and he barely had time to whirl and shear his chainblade through the beast's axe. As the creature hurled itself at his throat, he lashed out with a punch, his metallic fist shattering its face. Incredibly enough it didn't drop, but blinded by the brutal damage it groped blindly at him. Another sweep of the chainsword served to dispatch it, while a round from Varian's bolt pistol settled the matter of its controller.

Assault squads of the 375th followed their cannon fodder in the attack. The motars stopped as the chaos priests drove the troopers forward. Flamers, lascarbines, laspistols, and chainswords were gripped in their hands as they pressed forward. Fortune was not with them to the extent that they desired.

The autocannon and heavy stubber opened up on their advance. Rifled shotgun slugs and lasguns picked off troopers as the snipers killed. Grenade launchers fired explosives into their midst. The defenders of Maxia Asenscia slew those who had betrayed their city and their Emperor. Their hearts were filled only with fire.

The slave warriors took their toll, but under the guidance of Prius and Battle-Brother Yashida, the Sword dispatched them with ruthless efficiency. Yoshida slammed one of the last slave warriors against an jagged upthrust wall of metal, then assessed the incoming attack with a cold eye.

"Colonel-Commissar, we can break them with a hard strike," he commented. "Recommend a counterassault."

Two hundred meters away, Prius analyzed the situation himself. Quite possible. The enemy had proven hesitant and easily rattled. A close battle with a space marine in the fore?

It was an opportunity not to be missed.

"Men of the Sword," he called out over the vox. "Close with the enemy and shatter them!"

The Sword surged forward, the heavy weapons teams laying down a withering barrage of covering fire as the rest of the infantry advanced, blades held high. Their battle cries rose above the din of battle, none louder than the call of Battle-Brother Yashida.

The survivors of the assault teams crumpled like soft tin under the Sword's counter assault. Rockets, snipers, and heavy weapons from the Ascenscians provided support as the Arbites lead their squads into advantageous positions. The dreadful chaos priests ordered their charges to stand their ground. A few fled. Most feared the chaplins more than death.

It did not avail them. They were natural targets for the marine and no match for the superhuman and his weapons. Varian and Ristani added their own fearsome prowess to the battle, the colonel-commissar's chain blade shredding the iridescent flesh of a frothing preacher. Varian killed with cold precision and relentless power.

As the front line collapsed and the supporting squads were overrun or blasted to pieces, a second line reformed in front of the command center. Piles of rubble, wrecked buidings, and holes in walls were hastily manned as the tide turned against the 375th and the traitors hastily fortified themselves against the coming storm.

"Target the traitor priests!" Prius barked over the vox. They were clearly the key to shattering the morale of these traitors. The wretches wore PDF uniforms marked their ultimate disgrace to the Emperor. These were no weak-minded civilians who had fallen to the lure of easy power, these were men who had sworn their lives to the Emperor, only to turn their backs upon the most sacred oath.

The Sword had three snipers remaining, who went to work at once with the new target priority. Yashida also responded at once, his bolter snapping out a shot that blasted away one of the obvious organizers of this heresy. The Sword pressed forward, taking advantage of the momentum they still had.

He was distracted momentarily by a buzz of danger from a pile of tangled corpses. Somewhere within...

He took care of the risk by vaporizing the pile with a shot from his plasma pistol.

The 375th coallesced around the defensive positions. They had taken heavy casualties and could only expect more as the Sword and the Ascencians pressed harder. Snipers and heavy weapon teams sighted their weapons on the 375th defensive positions and let loose when the had a good target. Men fell.

Just behind the line of battle Colonel Feldon checked the indicator on his bolt pistol. It was win or die time. He lead his bodyguard unit toward the front.

--------------------------------------------------

Gathor watched as his magi projected what their imps saw infront of them. "It looks like these Imperials are not content to lay down and die. It was well some worthier soldiers didn't die to learn that. Ready the Earthshakers. Have them level the area just in front of the 375th's position. And the 375th's current position while we're at it. They'll probably be overrun by the time the shells hit. Have some useful troops, say the Pox Brotherhood, send in some squads for mop up."

Yashida was a sight to behold as he stormed into the ranks of the fallen soldiers, katana-esque power sword in one hand, bolter in the other, he efficiently dealt death with every motion. Inspired, the Sword followed him into the breach. Covering each other, Prius and Varian moved up, Prius blasting away with his plasma pistol, Varian mixing shots from his bolt gun with force rod-enhanced assaults from the powers of his mighty mind. The Sword fought on with valor and a sense of imminent victory, as they swept into the defensive positions. As Yashida turned to face the bodyguard unit, Prius and Varian moved in behind him.

All of them oblivious to the sword of Damocles perched above their heads, as the Earthshakers entered the target coordinates and awaited the order to fire.

A crack rent the air as the Earthshakers fired. Their huge shells flew through the air on calculated trajectories and came down fairly close to where they should have landed. Death bloomed in flowers of smoke, shrapnel, and concussive force.

Far away, a lone missle took flight. It had been lovingly maintained, the rituals of preperation and reverence sustained for just such an action. It went through its own arc into the sky, back towards one of the Earthshakers.

"INCOMING!" Prius bellowed, bare moments before the shells impacted. He was already on the ground, only to get launched back up into the air by a nearby impact. He slammed back down, the breath whuffing out of his lungs from the near impact, even through his carapace armor. He saw Yashida pinwheel by, blood streaming through the air.

Cowardly bastards, he fumed, crawling for the nearest bit of cover he could find. He could still sense Varian's presence, the inquisitor was alive, even if he couldn't see him. Likewise, Yashida was alive, hurt, and angry. Screams rose up around him, both his own men and the PDF traitors, as the artillery tored through their ranks like a scythe. His moment's warning had at least allowed some Swordsmen to find cover, but he could tell that even now he was down to little more than half the men he'd started with. Another blast buffeted him, showering debris down on top of him. Across the way he saw the bodyguard unit, mostly intact by some foul daemonic luck, sheltering for the moment as hell rained over them all.

The rocket attack wrecked an Earthshaker and interfered with the reloading of the others. Still, the gun crews completed their work with reasonable efficiency. The gun captain watched with approval. A line of slaves was shackled before him. He struck off the head of the closest slave. "Blood for the Blood God! Fire!"
