It's always happened at the moment you get your first Huge City, so I wonder what the new trigger is. Maybe it's the construction of a certain kind of building.Stravo wrote:Marius happens later in the game now? Well that sucks. Nothing like the Marian reform army to truly curbstomp the competition.

I rather like the change; in my game I got the reforms about the same time I finally reached the development necessary to start getting Triarii out, so I had a bunch of brand-spanking-new obsolete units. Kinda like IT.Stravo wrote:Marius happens later in the game now? Well that sucks. Nothing like the Marian reform army to truly curbstomp the competition.

You know when they're going to happen (your first Huge City, when the palace upgrade is complete), so why build a bunch of Triarii just before that happens?JediNeophyte wrote:I rather like the change; in my game I got the reforms about the same time I finally reached the development necessary to start getting Triarii out, so I had a bunch of brand-spanking-new obsolete units. Besides, isn't the loss of Triarii worth it in order to get better cavalry than those crappy Equites? All of the post-Marius units are improved across the board, but the biggest improvement has to be finally getting some half-decent cavalry.

Bloody heck, why did someone post this in this thread when I made a perfectly nice new thread for it? Who's gonna look in here besides people who play Rome. Well ... actually, never mind.
The thing that shits me off about this patch list is that there's no mention of fixing legionary shoulder armour. That is not acceptable. Yes, my standards are high
This might be a good time to mention, but Mike, do you remember when you gave me that link for an .exe that fixed the bug with the cheats where you had to keep on quitting everytime you used a cheat else you couldn't use it again? I tried it, and it didn't work- did it work for you?
Oh well, doesn't matter now, with a new patch I can abandon my "cheat" Seleucid game and go back to legitimate, new improved ass-stompings. Time to play as the Scipii or Julii, then a go at the Greek Cities. Heck, maybe even one of the barbarian factions.

Can anyone tell me how the hell you zoom in on the maps? I can't zoom in on the strategic map, and I can't figure out how to zoom in on the battle map to get a better view of my glorious victories.

I have no mousewheel.
Hitting F1 and bringing up the list of controls tells me that I can use + and - to change zooms, but that doesn't work.

Yup; it only works on the 1.1 version of the EXE. I'm not sure why it didn't work for you. Anyway, no doubt if you keep an eye on Gamecopyworld, they will release new versions of the NoCD and cheatcode patches for the 1.2 version within a week or two of the patch release.Vympel wrote:This might be a good time to mention, but Mike, do you remember when you gave me that link for an .exe that fixed the bug with the cheats where you had to keep on quitting everytime you used a cheat else you couldn't use it again? I just finished a victorious campaign as the House of Julii on Very Hard/Very Hard, so I'm ready for the new version as well (it was a short campaign, but once you've won the short campaign, the long campaign is just a matter of patience; you're way too well-established to lose at this point).Oh well, doesn't matter now, with a new patch I can abandon my "cheat" Seleucid game and go back to legitimate, new improved ass-stompings. I didn't know at the time, the manual doesn't tell you that (I am still on my first Imperial campaign, here). And yes, I do vastly prefer the Marius units of course, but it's just fun to set up battles in a classic legion formation.Darth Wong wrote:You know when they're going to happen (your first Huge City, when the palace upgrade is complete), so why build a bunch of Triarii just before that happens?

Is it just me or are the difficulty levels on the SPQR mod more difficult? I was playing as the Brutii on Hard/Hard with normal, and I was kicking ass. I switch over to SPQR, start a new game, and all the sudden I'm actually loosing armies.Ace Pace wrote:If you want a real challenge, get the SPQR mod and play as Julii, I garuntee a hard game.Darth Wong wrote: I just finished a victorious campaign as the House of Julii on Very Hard/Very Hard, so I'm ready for the new version as well (it was a short campaign, but once you've won the short campaign, the long campaign is just a matter of patience; you're way too well-established to lose at this point).

I'll actually miss the rapid-fire siege tower auto-firing after the new patch comes out. It's pretty fucking cool.
I took Corduba once at a late stage in the game when it had large stone walls, and the computer had a shitload of Sacred Band spearmen on the walls. I brought up two siege towers, stopped them short of the walls to give them a wider field of fire, and let them unload with those rapid-fire ballista. The hail of fire pretty much wiped that section of wall completely clean of Sacred Band spearmen, blasting them clean off the walls and scattering their bodies over the interior of the city.
This tactic completely wiped out four entire units of Sacred Band spearmen before my men even hit the walls: a crushing blow to his defense plans. It allowed me to put my early legionary cohort on the walls with no resistance, and I was able to take out the small number of remainind wall defenders at the gatehouse with minimal difficulty.
I suppose you could do the same thing with slower-firing siege towers, but it would take a lot longer and you'd use up more of the clock. I'll miss that murderous barrage.

Waittaminute- the rapid firing siege tower auto firing? What have I been missing out on? You can put rapid fire ballista in siege towers?!

They already come equipped with them. All you have to do is turn them on by activating "auto-fire" (this obviously presumes that you are not playing "Arcade mode" battles).Vympel wrote:Waittaminute- the rapid firing siege tower auto firing? All siege towers come with either archers or ballista, depending on the size of the siege towers (the big ones that you use for assaulting cities with Large Stone Walls or Epic Stone Walls have ballista on top, while the small ones that you use for assaulting cities with regular Stone Walls have archers).
Didn't you ever notice the little window on top, where they can shoot out at people? When a unit of infantry is pushing a siege tower, clicking on the Auto-Fire button will make the siege tower open fire on anything within range. Most people don't know about this because they assume it has to do with the intrinsic auto-fire capabilities of the infantry unit itself (as it normally does), but when an infantry unit is pushing a siege tower, that button performs an entirely different function.
Try it; you'll love it.
