Tsunami survivors found on island

Nine people who survived the Asian tsunami have been found on an Indian island after 38 days of living on coconuts, police say.
A police party making a random check found five men, three children and one woman in a remote part of Campbell Bay, an island in the Andaman archipelago.

The nine, all of them emaciated, are Nicobari aboriginals, Campbell Bay's police chief told AFP news agency.

They were found 39 kilometres (24 miles) from the island's naval base.
Wow. 38 days. I wonder what they did for water?

The island's at least 24 miles long? Big enough for fresh water sources.

Well, coconuts contain a fair bit of water in their milk. And, as has been mentioned, the island isn't exactly small. Finally, it's rained more than a few times in the region since the tsunami hit. Collecting fresh water shouldn't be too hard.

Heh, I looked up on google for other stories and according to the Police Chief, yup, they lived off coconut water. Silly Flakin. I think I was just shocked that they'd found anyone still alive after that much time.

:?: Has it only been 38 days since the Tsunami?

Definitely makes an interesting survival story. Am I mistaken if I recall coconuts are supposed to be natural laxatives?

Perhaps a further catalyst for their emaciated state?

It's nice to know that some of those missing people might still be alive somewhere out there, but for most of those still missing... :(

It was Boxing Day, or the day after Christmas to you folks, so yes, just over a month.

I'd like to add that coconuts contain a natural laxative, so it's a good idea not to drink or eat too much of them else any water ingested will promptly be expelled in short time.

Coconuts are a saving grace if you have to survive in the jungle. They're a source of food, water, and their shells can be used for a hundred different tasks.
