I can't see Cheney wanting to deal with the politics that being President entails. He is one of the most powerful VPs ever and doesn't need to directly worry about the "political machinery" that Karl Rove seems to control via the Republican party. Also, he probably doesn't have the support base among the evangelicals to make a successful run. He is more a neo-con than a crusading Christian and neo-cons don't have a huge electoral population that I'm aware of.Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi wrote:No suprise there. I wasn't even expecting him to serve another term as Vice President before the campaign.
Although it would be wierd if Cheney ended up running against Kerry in 2008. That would be the most lifeless election ever.

I've heard that Jeb's a hell of a lot smarter than his presidential brother (but of course that's not saying much ). You'll have to ask the Floridians on the board about his competence, because they're the ones who know best.Boyish-Tigerlilly wrote:how competent and good is jeb though, as a gov. in Florida?

Jeb has announced his that he intends not to run, for whatever it's worth. Personally I don't think he will, with any luck we'll get NEW and EXCITING candidates like Bill Frist

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

What's that got to do with getting the Republican nomination?Boyish-Tigerlilly wrote:how competent and good is jeb though, as a gov. in Florida?

The Republicans have surely figured out by now that running governors is the only way to win the Presidency. Senatorial campaigns just die, period. They're never going to let Frist win the nomination, as he'd just be chewed to pieces over his voting record in the Senate. They also have realized that you need the influence of someone from a powerful state, who has been a good governor there, and ideally from a swing state (JEB Bush served effectively in that fashion even though he wasn't running, for Florida).
What that means is that with JEB having removed himself from the running, there is one highly likely candidate for the Presidency: Bob Taft. Condi will probably be his Veep.

Taft/Rice 2008
Any chance that the 2006 gubernatorial election could have an impact on Taft's appearance? Columbus mayor Michael Coleman (D) is quite popular in the capital, though I don't know that he's well known in the rest of the state. Then, of course you have Jerry Springer. If he wins (hell, if he runs, it's not quite for sure yet) by sheer name-recognition, then that could look bad for Ohio Republicans and Taft's probably hand-picked replacement. How much it would reflect on Taft is what I'm not sure about. Blackwell is the obvious choice by the Republicans, but I think the Dems have been pretty effective at making him look bad in the public eye. I mean, the response by the Right to charges of election mishandling, indeed, calling for his resignation, was essentially limited to calling the Dems a bunch of racists. OTOH, there were accusations by some Democrats that Blackwell's mishandling was intentionally targetted on poor people and minorities. So if it's Coleman vs. Blackwell, then I'm thinking that just about every black person in Ohio (12% of pop) is voting for Coleman.
I don't keep up on things as much as this probably looks, but I am an Ohio resident.
