The Dead Kennedys, all of it's pretty good, but Plastic Surgery Disasters and Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables are my favorites.
NOFX, some may argue that they came to late to really qualify as pure punk, but if they've ever gone wrong, I have yet to find it. Ribbed and White Trash, Two Heebs, and a Bean are my favorites.
Fear, more melodious than most early punk, but everything they did was golden.
DOA, if you want a clue to early what hardcore was, this is a band that you cannot go wrong with. Again, anything they put out is good. I wouldn't go looking for polished production techniques, however.

Oh, pure punk is ok too. Just awesome punk in general.
[edit] And song names are a plus. Trying to compile one or two cd's worth of some awesome punk music.

I have the self-titled album. I was looking for more thrashish punk. Stuff to rock out to.Superman wrote:Social Distortion rocks. Check them out NOW.

While punk purists will probably snort at the mere mention of their names, early Offspring is really good stuff. The Offspring, their debut album, is especially interesting. It's very raw, very fast. It's nowhere near as hardcore as some of the stuff from the early 80's, but I recommend it. The Offspring, Ignition, and Smash, their first three albums, are your best bet. Everything from Ixnay on the Hombre forward is really more like pop with punk influences. Not as bad as, say, Blink 182, but if you're looking for punk, the last four albums aren't really what you want.
Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963

The Ramones and The Clash. I cannot believe that these two have not been mentioned.
Oh, and if you like shitty albeit important music, Sex Pistols.

Let me clarify what I'm looking for. I'm trying to make 1 or 2, max 3 CD's of the "best of punk." I need specific songs so I can legally aquire them and compile them. Stupid me, I should have said that in the first place.

The Hives aren't too bad, and their second album, Tyrannosaurus Hives, is a lot better than their first, Your new Favourite Band, especially since YNFB is horrificaly short

Gabba gabba hey!
Some recommends:
Old school:
MC5 "Kick out the Jams"
DK's "Kill the poor", "Holiday in Cambodia", "too drunk to fuck"
Check out The Misfits and Television as well.
Historical:
Sex Pistols "bodies" "anarchy" (Remember, it was '77 or so, and Mr. Lydon was -- on national tv -- proclaiming himself as the anti-christ. Pretty heady, even for hype-hipsters they were)
Ramones "pinhead" "sheena is a punk rocker" and "the kkk took my baby away". Slower tempo, that one, but hilarious.
and of course, The Clash, the only band that matters. Go buy London Calling and pick your fav; that album is the album.
2nd wave, modern:
Bad Religion "kerosene" and "American Jesus" are good ones, and "struck a nerve" is good (slow tempo but with whats-her-face from Conrete Blonde singing back-up) from Recipe for hate.
and a gem I heard last night, not sure if it's available in stores - Me First and the Gimme Gimmes doing punk rock covers of REO Speedwagon songs. "Heard it from a friend" makes an awesome punk rock song.
And everything else already mentioned in this thread. Oi!

Misfits are good too. Ultra-violent b-horror inspired lyrics set to cheery tunes? Fun!

I don't like much punk, since it usually gets quite on my nerves. I would, however, recommend "Oscillator in Distortion" and the earlier album of unknwon name by The Mad Capsule Markets. Some crazy ass japanese guys that incorporate electronics into their songs.
I've heard of Atari Teenage Riot too, but I don't know what they sound like.

When I was a senior in high school, I was in a class where one sophomore kid promptly stated that. "Wow, Green Day really was the first punk band." Not one bit of sarcasm. I promptly swatted him on the back of the hand and the next day brought in a burned CD with "Too Drunk to Fuck" and "MTV Get Off The Air"

There are so many good songs from most of these bands, I'll just name a few.
Misfits - mostly the old stuff when Danzig was still singing, with a few exceptions.
Helena
Die, Die my Darling
Attitude
Last Caress
Teenagers from Mars
The Clash
London Calling
Rock the Casbah
Should I Stay or Should I Go?
Brand New Cadillac
Sex Pistols
God Save the Queen
Anarchy in the UK
Ramones
Sheena is a Punk Rocker
I Wanna be Sedated
Fear
I Love Livin in the City
Let's have a War
And there's about five hundred versions of "I Fought the Law". Usually it's good, though. I've heard Ramones, Green Day, The Clash, and some others do it.

Don't really like punk-rock but I like the Sex Pistols for some reason, also got Dead Kennedys for the comedy value.
Favorites would be:
