Indonesia is the world's shining new pillar of civilization

Indonesia plans new morality laws
Adulterers, cohabiting unmarried couples and those who kiss in public could all become criminals if a new Indonesian penal code is approved.
The draft reportedly proposes harsh fines and prison terms for those who flout the rules - drawn up to replace those inherited from Dutch rule.

Many say the existing code is flawed and outdated, but some activists are deeply unhappy with the new proposals.

But they would bring Indonesia into line with many other Muslim states.

Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population.

Kissing in public is a crime if the people around are not happy
Justice ministry official Abdul Gani Abdullah

Under the proposed draft, offenders caught kissing in the open could be jailed for up to 10 years and fined as much as 300 million rupiah ($33,000), reports the Jakarta Post.

Unmarried couples living together could be penalised with up to two years in jail and a maximum fine of 30 million rupiah.

It would also give police and officials the power to raid houses of all those they suspected of living together.

Justice ministry official Abdul Gani Abdullah said the law would only apply if others complained.

"Kissing in public is a crime if the people around are not happy and lodge a complaint. But if they think it's all right, then no action will be taken," he told the AFP news agency.

"The same goes with cohabitation. If neighbours think the presence of an unmarried couple living together is a nuisance, they can report to police."

Law expert and women's rights activist Nursyahbani Katjasungkana told the Jakarta Post the morality articles were excessive and infringed on the "rights of the body".

Legal expert Andi Hamzah asked: "What about tourists? Will we hunt them down too?"

The code is expected to be debated over a two-year period.

Because they are human beings who need help? Even though they do have an annoying tendency to wear Osama bin Laden T-shirts in front of US troops.

On the other hand, Aceh is the home to Indonesia most rabid fundies, so perhaps Allah was trying to tells us something.

I wonder... is Islam more tolerant today, or was it more tolerant in the 7th-13th centuries?

I think it was somewhat more tolerant back then, but then it could afford to be. In its early years, Islam was not only spreading rapidly, conquering everywhere it went, Islamic civilization was, at that time, truly as advanced as any other in the world. Muslim cities like Baghdad and Cordoba enjoyed a vital intellectual life far in advance of anything in Europe at the time. It's only real rivals were China and Byzantium. Islamic civilization was enjoyed a dominating position, and as such, could afford to tolerate other religions within its sphere (although it gave them and their followers inferior status), after all, what did mighty Islamic civilization, with its vast and growing domains really have to fear from them?

Today, however, as others have mentioned, Muslim countries are the most backward and unproductive in the world. They produce nothing of value to the rest of the world, except oil, and that they owe to geography, not to their own skills. It is natural in this state of things for people to reflect back on their glorious past, compare it to the dismal present, and ask themselves "where did we go wrong?" They may also ask "who did this to us?" And to answer these questions, a depressingly large number of people in the Islamic countries have concluded that they owe their present misfortunes to Allah's disfavor. They have fallen away from the pure faith, and Allah is displeased with them. So naturally, they conclude, the answer lies in returning to a strict and pure Islamic faith. Consequently, all corrupting influences must be purged, and practices contrary to islamic law must of course be suppressed sternly. This can easily lead to intolerance.

The most expensive kiss in the Universe.

I see. Beware the thought police.

In other words, it's a great tool for being an asstard to whoever you don't like. "Hey, officer. Those newlyweds kissed in public. I saw it and was distressed by it.", "Hey officer. There are a couple of people living in that house and I think they are in cohab."

Islam was far more tolerant Back In The Day. That is why the Islamic radicals are such monkey-fucks. They want to return to the era of the Rashidun, the first four righteous Caliphs of Islam after Mohommed's death, and the era of al-Andalus, Islamic Spain, thew height of Islamic Hegemony.

... an era before the fatwa of women wearing veils (Mohammed's wife sat behind a curtain when dispensing advice to men so as to avoid any hint of impropriety). When women were expected to be educated and take their place in society (Mohommed's first wife, Khadjida, was a business owner and they met when she employed him).

Jews and Christians were tolerated and given respectable positions (Sala al-Hideen -- Saladin-- was always with his royal advisor, Moses Maimonides, a Jew from Grenada, Spain, who fled the Reconquista). An era when science and learning of the natural laws were held in the highest esteem (theoretically scholars in Damascus were contemplating atomic theory in the years before the Crusades).

Oh, yes, let's go back to that time, by all means-- they don't even know what they ask for. And the poster child, Osama bin-Laden, once described as a "merchant prince" by the Taliban-- in other words, he is not a legitimate leader to call for a Jihad, only Muftis (guardians of Islamic holy sites), Qadis (judges of sharia'a law) and rulers of Islamic states can call for Jihads. Answering a Jihad from one who is not qualified is to answer a false Jihad.

So Indonesia wants to flush itself down. huh?
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

Coyote, that's precisely the kind of counter to Islamofascism we need more of.

All we need is for it to come out of some Saudi cleric's mouth so it won't be dismissed automatically as Zionist Crusader lies. :?

The Dutch are having problems with their Muslim population in Holland itself these days, nevermind in a former colony.

Small correction here. The WHOLE of Christian Europe would include the Byzantine Empire, and I am sure that statement would not still apply when you add the libraries of Constantinople into the equation. If you change it to the whole of Roman Catholic Europe, however...

And as to the question of what went wrong with the Islamic world, try picking up a copy of Bernard Lewis' book, titled, fittingly enough What Went Wrong?

The Dutch weren't all that good at improving the East Indies; they were rather sub par when compared to the other colonial powers.
