A mob of Seattle Central Community College students chased military recruiters off campus last month, after a tense confrontation. Now a student anti-war group is stepping up efforts to keep them out for good.

Students Against War has launched a petition drive aimed at persuading administrators to order a halt to on-campus military recruiting.

They're yelling at the recruiter, throwing shit at him, and chasing him off the campus. Campus security escorted him out, arrested nobody, and the school administration hasn't done shit about this.

If the students don't want recruiters on campus, fine. Let them protest to their hearts content, but this wasn't a protest - this was a mob.

That's fucking ridiculous. It's one thing to not like having recruiters there. I personally prefer not to have them around as the damn Navy won't leave me alone. But that picture shows a mob, and keeping recruiters out of a college is just stupid. Honestly I feel sorry for that recruiter and he definately deserves an apology.

If you read the whole thing they're trying to get the recruiters kept off campus because of "dont ask dont tell". Anti-discrimination and all that...

Yeah, I know that's what's going on. But looking at the picture by itself...well, it's one of those things where the picture comes out such that it doesn't come close to conveying what the accompanying text does. It looks like some sort of goofy gathering at first glance. I just thought that was something funny to point out.

It wasn't a link to an article requiring subscription to view, and I'm not quite sure what to do with copyrighted material. I usually don't post the whole thing as at least a courtesy to the source.

If you just want to get comments on a photo, put it in the Art & Photography section next time. News and politics generally gets more serious treatment, and you should include a link to the entire article if you're not posting the article itself.

The sheepish, apologetic-looking guy is the bloodthirsty, warmongering military type; the attractive, excitable young ladies are the equally bloodthirsty, baying, mindless mob, and the short, nondescript guy (being towered over by green-shirt) is the security man?

Outrageous behaviour. Disgraceful. Shouldn't be allowed.

which is amusing - colleges dont get funded if they discriminate on basis of sexuality, while the military has dont ask dont tell - some depts of gov havent caught up with each other.

however, attacking the recruiter is completely out of bounds.

Did you bother to read the first post? Why would someone post the article and only bring up the photo in passing in a reply to their own thread if the aim was to focus on the photo?

News and politics generally gets more serious treatment, and you should include a link to the entire article if you're not posting the article itself.

I hope they like it when their tuition prices get doubled because of this. One of those fun riders attached to education bills includes one that colleges which refuse to allow a military recruiting presence on campus can lose their federal funding.

I went to school at Chico State. Up until the 80's (I believe), there was an active ROTC unit there. People began protesting against them because of anti gay policy that was in effect, and eventually Chico closed its campus to ROTC.

The Seattle area is especially liberal - there was a bake sale held by the College Republicans at the UW a while back where they charged lower prices to black folks than they did to white folks. It didn't go over very well...

Seattle Central is a junior college (2-year) and has a lot of minority students. As I recall, some student organizations felt the recruiting was racist because the recruiters were "targeting" minority students (for a voluntary enlistment, mind you), while others were just opposed to the war and want the recruiters off campus.

I suspect there will be no more recruiting at that campus, and I wouldn't be surprised if other Seattle area schools decided to ban armed forces recruiting on their campuses.

Under the idea it's OK to screw everyone as long as you screw the people you are targeting? Tuition is vastly too high as it is. I guarantee that doing that would drive alot of perfectly respectable students out of college because they can't afford it.

There is something vaguely relevant to "news and politics" in the picture; the contradiction between the emotive language used in the article ("mob", "tense confrontation", "fighting") and the fairly mild-mannered goings-on in the best picture the editors could scrape up to illustrate their dramatic choice of words.

I see one small civilian security man, a bemused-looking but obviously otherwise unharmed "victim", a small, orderly, non-violent group of clean-cut, middle-class protesters, precisely zero missiles being thrown, precisely zero acts of violence. And yet the writers describe a "mob", "chasing" and "fighting recruiters".

That's why the equal-protection/discrimination angle is the one being taken by protesters these days .... they're setting up a federal court fight if they lose federal funds. Many public institutions are barred by state law from aiding employers who discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation.

Well, this is obviously because the left-leaning Seattle newspapers are out to get the evil protestors. Seriously though, I suspect the newspaper over-dramatized this somewhat. As I understand it, the crowd was mostly vocal to begin with, then started pushing and throwing things when security showed up. Not surprising, but not okay either, in my book.

What if a man basically pressures a woman into haveing sex when she doesn't weant to, although he never actually hurts her or even directly threatens it? Implication, intimidation, and....? The end result is still rape.

Or they could simply switch collages or hey... guess what? Outprotest the protesters! It happens from time to time. If you want to be a private insitution and not respect American govement institions then by all means go ahead, we will draw the line somewhere of course but if you don't want recuriters(Who mind you at best get a small office and are only allowed to "advertise" on certian days) on campus then you must not want the goverment there to help you, to provided you with aid and protection. Fine lets take away the recuriters but we are also taking away anything else we were providing you to for free(Free relativly speaking your parents and soon you or are paying for it through taxes)
