KOTOR 2 on PC is out!

Post by Vympel »

And I'm gonna go get it in a few hours

*does the Eddie Murphy ice cream dance*

Here's hoping it hasn't got the same crash bugs that make KOTOR 1 impossible to play on my new graphics card ... fucken ..

A) I'll have it once I get paid, it sucks to be carrying a two-bedroom place on one paycheck.

B) Just change the texture detail setting before leaving each area. It flushes the texture cache, and poof, no crashes. Annoying, and would be CHILD'S PLAY to fix in a patch, but it works. (KotOR I)

It uses the exact same graphics engine as the first KOTOR correct?

It will be the xbox for me, likely rental, until I can get a new computer with upgraded hardware to play Kotor 1 and 2.

Strangely... I'm no longer feeling all that keen on playing the game. I was going to go in to GameTraders and see if I could rent one this morning... but then I forgot to sleep, now I just want to go to bed. Oh well, I'll check the shop tommorow and see if I can't hire it.

Mine seems to be entirely random- by "area" you don't mean whenever you open a door, right? :)

Sucks ...

I went and bought KOTOR 2 during my lunch break. Here's hoping ....

Vympel, what's your graphics card, by the way? I just want to know if it's like the ATI 9600 problem with Neverwinter Nights.

Are there any differences between the PC and the XBOX version (a la Yavin in KOTORI)?

nvidia 6600 GT. It fucks up on SW: Battlefront and KOTOR, works fine with everything else. Completely hangs the computer at random, forcing me to manual restart or rebooting by itself.

IT FUCKING MOTHERFUCKING CRASHES THOSE FUCKING INCOMPETENT LUCASARTS FUCKING MORONS SHIT ME FUCKING CRAP WHAT IS THIS SHIT WILL I NEVER BE ABLE TO PLAY ANOTHER LUCASARTS FUCKING GAME AGAIN I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS FUCKING SHIT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH

These fucking fuckwads. These drooling gibbering dumbcunts. That's THREE fucking Lucasarts games all with the same fucking problem- TOTALLY FUCKING RANDOM CRASHES that lockup my fucking computer and force me to do a manual restart. There is no fucking rhyme or reason to this bullshit. I am off the fucking map. I am seeing fucking red. It doesn't matter what shitfuck driver I use, these games will not fucking cooperate. It's the same thing every fucking time, the speakers crackled and the sound loops/cuts out, and then I'm hung.

Is my video card fucking defective or something?

I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS. Even WORSE, I tried it on my friend's PC, who has the SAME FUCKING GRAPHICS CARD (we bought two identical ones) and his DID NOT CRASH at length- the same fucking story with Battlefront. I didn't get past the fucking creation screen.

So I couldn't play KOTOR, Battlefront, or KOTOR 2. BASTARDS.

It could well be a defect in your video card then, but in this case, the only way to make sure is to do a full sweep, video, audio, mobo, the works. Since you've handled video, next step is audio.

Speaking of, are you sure it's not a sound card issue? The speakers fucking up makes it sound like that could be a problem. Does your friend have a different sound card and/or updated drivers? What sound card do you have?

We both have identical sound cards, but in general he updates his drivers more than me. I was thinking that too, but isn't it odd for it to happen only after I get my new video card? This never happened to KOTOR 1 before, unless it's some sort of new DirectX 9.0c related issue (as I hadn't touched KOTOR for quite a while)... I'm trying to update right now. The even wierder thing is that Battlefront used to play fine without crashing (and I bought it after I got the new card), though the lack of crashing could've been pure fluke ...

Hmm, a new card, you say? Your old one wouldn't happen to be a Radeon, would it?

Just tried updating sound card drivers, did nothing. In fact, for some reason, KOTOR 2 has decided to run in windowed mode until I tell it otherwise, even though the .ini file clearly has fullscreen set to 1.

I'll try updating again ... failing that, I'm considering a fucking sledgehammer.

Updating them again did nothing either. I just get the random lockup, again and again. Funny thing- my power button doesn't even work when it happens, but the reset button does. Wierd. This time around I get the wierdest sound looping yet- a high pitched whine interspersed with repeating normal sound and what sounded like an ultra sloooooowww version of a portion of speech, probably from the Ebon Hawk's computer during the prologue (since it's constantly talking).

I should just resign myself to every fucking Lucasarts game not working on this fucking PC. Buggered if I know how to actually fix anything on this shitfuck machine.

Well, without having access to the Lucasarts knowledge base and direct access to your system, I can't really say anything for certain, but I'm still thinking something is wrong with the sound somewhere. If it's not drivers, it may be (bizzarely enough) the order of the audio codecs on your system. If I remember correctly, I-War 2 had similar issues at one point. Otherwise, it could be overheating issues, check to make sure your system isn't near a heating element. If that's fine, try lowering audio acceleration (and potentially graphics as well, if that doesn't work). If none of these work, it may be time to move on to updating your motherboard's drivers and potentially even updating your bios, but we'll get to that later. In the meantime, checking outu Lucasarts technical FAQ may be of some help, as would googling the problem t o see if anyone else is suffering from similar issues and if they have a workaround.

Vympel, did you *completely* clean out your old card's drivers before you installed your new ones (using program like Driver Cleaner)? You might have something lingering around making the driver/DirectX/KOTOR thinking its dealing with Ti4400 instead of the 6600GT. That could cause the system to seen the card invalid instructures.

Also, whats your power supply?

For the windowing issue, there are actually two "Fullscreen" entries in swKotOR2.ini -- both must be set to "1," or it'll reset to windowed mode.

For the crash issue, something that the people on the Obsidian Entertainment board came up with was that having a custom wnaspi32.dll (comes with some burning and ripping software) in your Windows directory crashes the game on area loads (bad interaction with the copy protection?). Rename or move it, and the game seems to work in a lot of cases.

Audio codecs? Can you give some examples? I'm a bit ignorant. I've messed around with a few codecs related to trying to play media and that sort of thing ... (K-Lite Full codec pack and such)

Definitely not overheating, Motherboard Monitor is all in the clear, and besides, it should happen with other graphically intensive games.

I've never updated my motherboard drivers or BIOS, so that's a possibility as well. Currently I'll work on the codecs, see if that does anything ...

thanks for the windowed issue workaround Datana! Unfortunately my crash isn't related to area loads, it's purely random.

Nope, don't have driver cleaner! That's another potential solution though, I'll go give it a download.

That's actually a damn good point, the latest gen of video cards GUZZLES power like a Thailand...well, never mind. Entirely possible that you're a little under, and every game uses the video card in a different way, entirely possible that the games in question are trying to flex more features at a time and then you get an undersupplied card and bam.

Does the following lend support to this?

I was originally playing at 1280x1024- I turned down the resolution to 1024x768 and was able to play for quite a bit longer- no crashes during this. I then decided to try the intermediate position and chose 1280x960, I still played for a bit, but then it crashed- but not a graphically intensive place- actually on the map screen. Wierd.
