The fact that dozens of such governments have collapsed after 70 or less years of massive dysfunction and of the four that remain three only do so by embracing capitalism and the fourth is starving seem to be proof enough.

Actually, there were functioning collectivist societies in Europe a long time ago, but those were small farming collectives in the Neolithic period, and they became increasingly hierarchial around 5000-6000 years ago. (Probably due to cultural contamination from Indo-European nomads)
